Hello Nathan, i like your podcast a lot , the content is varied and your pronunciation is so articulated, it really helps listening. I have some improvement comments on this particular episode though. There are a few time errors and even contradictions in the various invention... i think it's worth checking...😢

Ok, I'll ask - why is it being said a compass points magnetically to the south (南方) when it actually points magnetically to the north?

The earliest version of Chinese compass is a called a 司南, which takes form of a spoon. The handle of the spoon points to the south, whereas the oval part points to the north indeed. People referred to the direction of the handle of the spoon, and thus giving the name 司南,and later 指南针.
