This amplifier is sold. The Gentleman is set to pick this amp up in June, thankyou all

Back in the mid-late '70's, I had both a D&A Warrior and Phantom at different times (both older grey case, single-band). I had the Warrior first. It was flaky, unstable, and would eat final tubes for lunch. In the year-or-so that I had the Warrior, it flashed a tube and blew the fuse at least 3 times. That was with only 3.5-4 watts on AM or 12 watts PEP on SSB! In every case, I bought a full set of finals and spent several hundred dollars, only to have it do it again. I sold the Warrior and bought a Phantom (I think it was 12-tube 4 driving 8, or it may have been 10-tube 4 driving 6, I don't remember), and it worked perfectly. Rock solid and super clean (as long as I didn't drive it with more than about 3.5 to 4 watts on AM, 12 watts peak on SSB). I loved that Phantom and wish I had never sold it. What a great piece of iron! Those were the days!

In the 1970s I can remember seeing lots of ads for mail in electronic courses in magazines. One of the schools mentioned the owner of D&A was a student and showed one of the amplifiers.

if using 6lq6 yes, but if converted to 24 lq6 or 31 you're looking at $20 each or so
@sammaloney24994 жыл бұрын
@@Rooster_Radio is there a power difference by converting to the 24lq6 tube ? I have a Maverick 250, havent powered it up so not sure if it will need anything, just looking for info. thanks, Sam.
@kd5inm11 ай бұрын
@@sammaloney2499 No power difference. The 24LQ6 is the same as the 6LQ6 except the 24LQ6 has 24v heaters. The first number generally indicates the heater voltage. So to change from one tube to the other you just change the heater voltage. As an example I have a 10 tube phantom that is capable of use as a tuned input/output amp on 40,20,15, and 10M on ham radio. I got it with the bank of 6 tubes removed and only the driver bank of 4 6LQ6's in it. I set it up to run those tubes for a friend and it did about 250 watts out. I got it back from him after he got bored with it and I ran across 7 new 24LQ6's of which 6 are matched and new in the box. I ordered a 24v transformer capable of supplying the amperage to run the heaters so I plan on using that transformer to provide the heater voltage to run those 6 tubes and install them in that phantom and run it along with the bank of 4- 6LQ6's driving those 6 with 250 watts on 40 and 20m ham bands. I have a little QRP radio I can drive it with and get atleast 500 to 800 out.

You wouldn't run into the issue of over-driving these CB amps if you made a very simple swamping network. Either that, or you could just bypass the driving tubes and drive the final directly with an export radio. Add some switching, and you could have the best of all worlds.

@@Rooster_RadioNext one you happen across that clean it would be worth it to pull all the tubes and plug it in and slowly ramp it up on a variac. I used to work on those, mostly Phantoms and Mavericks. They are easy to fix. I got one that was unlucky enough to have been left in a horse barn on the ground. I cleaned it up and re-capped and replaced the diodes and the high voltage choke as well. The old ceramic choke had been broken in two. I took a heavy ceramic form approximately the same diameter and wound a new choke and tested it to have spec to block the RF from feeding back into the HV power but it would pass the HV just fine to the tubes. After cleaning it up and scraping horse manure off and fixing it I managed to get around 800 to 900 out on peaks. I fed it into a 1000 watt 50 ohm dummy load and used a RF ampmeter I built and measured voltage, amperage and resistance and used ohms law to calculate power out. I didn't need no stinkin bird lol.😂 Theres more than one way to skin a cat.
