I hate when people is like," he needs to sound like the D'angelo from voodoo or brown sugar". Why would you want him to sound the same from like years ago. He's growing and that what we do as people grow. Nothing stays the same in this world. He's growing as an artist and this album is good. I'm impressed with D'angelo not coming out with an album for years and hitting us with this masterpiece.

I still haven't come to a final conclusion as to what I think of Black Messiah because sonically it is a subtle yet extured affair. But what I will say is that it is refreshing to hear someone communicating like a real live human being rather than a computer or cyborg. Intimacy is what's missing circa 2014 and this is what he provides to the listener. He sounds like a long time friend who comes over for a visit (coffee or wine with a down home meal) after an extended absence. Then, we catch up on our vague memories of the past times, and we don't skip a beat with our stories (real, imagined and somewhere in between). It's that blurriness that allows us to just be in an era where everything must be labeled and defined. That's just my opinion.

I'm from the UK. I'm 33. I had never heard of D'Angelo before. Heard "Sugah Daddy" play on a late night radio station, had to pull the car over to shazam it. Loved it. Then couple of months later heard Jess Glynne (UK singer) be interviewed, she got asked the question, what music is she big into at the moment, she said, "D'Angelo and the Vanguard: Black Messiah" so i downloaded it, and i basically haven't stopped listening to it since then, and that was about a month ago. This album has restored my faith in music.

Riding out in your car. Chilling, listening to this album and appreciating the artistry. I love Black Messiah. It is so unique and individual. Or sitting down relaxing looking out the window and listening to this album, it fits the mood. I love Brown Sugar. I love VooDoo. I love Black Messiah. I am a fan for life. D'Angelo has a valuable sound that I have to admit is his, in this day and time. When you get tired of rap, you can have D'Angelo. When you get tired of songs telling what a man can do to my body and calling me a bitch or whore. Then you can have D'Angelo. I get in a zone when I listen to this album. He is saying some deep stuff. Yeah some of it is hard to understand now until you really listen to it. But keep listening and you will get it. Or don't it is up to you. But as for me, I love Black Messiah. I love VooDoo and I love Brown Sugar.

All the arguments that I have heard about this record (in person) have basically said the same thing- They liked Voodoo better. But I gotta say, A good set of headphones helps a listener understand this record on a HNL. D'Angelo fans might think of Voodoo as his best work, and this one isn't as good, or as put together as tightly as that record, but production wise, this work is a masterpiece. From a technical standpoint there is some really cutting edge stuff going on here which makes it a work of art quite apart from the music of the thing. The music is what it is, and its pretty good for that. But the music (and vocals, which people are hitting for some dumb reason, probably because they don't sound autotuned like people like these days) as a medium of a sonic landscape, that is masterwork. NOBODY is making records that sound like this today. The virtuosity of this production makes it quite progressive- I suspect producers will follow this record doing new types of things in the studio because of this record. So it will change how a significant chunk of music sounds going forward. That alone makes it better than almost anything that was produced in 2014. Many people won't get it- they're hung up on the production techniques which make Katy Perry popular. That's fine- those people don't understand music as anything other than something which is meant to be consumed like candy or crack. But this stuff actually opens up new sonic territory. Nothing the Top 40 is doing can possibly come close to saying that. So yeah, in sum, get some good headphones and learn what 3D sound sounds like. Taaron313, that means you.

Still !!! Buy the CD or buy it on iTunes. They are really trying to sabotage the brother by putting the full album on youtube, so that he can't get paid for his talent and hard work. Too many people may just settle for listening to his album online. If you area REAL fan, buy the album.
