I've done that myself in the past. Came back from a det out in Kuwait. Got home, family had no idea I was back till I walked in. Can still feel mom's hug 20 years later. Went out for a couple of pints with the old man. Good times

It is heartwarming to see these special reunions. They remind me of my family's two reunions with my father. He was deployed for four years during WW2 and two years during the Korean conflict. Several of my cousins endured three reunions, WW2, Korea, and Vietnam for a total of 8 years of separation from their fathers and sons.

People think our military members are tough. And make no mistake, they are. But the family members are where they get that toughness! Family members usually have it worse. Every time they see or hear something on the news they automatically think the worst. And if their loved ones are deployed overseas and might be operating outside the wire or something and are unable to communicate with their families due to opsec or connection issues, it makes things worse. Because if you hear of something happening and can’t reach them, human nature takes over and we assume the worst. Family members dealing with that kind of stress are in a league of their own! God bless all of our military and military families!

When I graduated basic training and military police training, I returned home to surprise my mom and dad. Basically a celebration for about 2 days, went and saw a few friends the next day. More celebrating. Even Canadian military has it's great reasons to serve.

I remember my father's first words when I got home from training, windows on either side of door only let you see shapes through them, because of full dress uniform with the peaked cap, my father asked my brother "What the hell have you done? ", thinking I was a police officer. Never laughed so hard.

If you have never been the parent or child of a deployed military member or that military member themselves, you can never truly understand what we go through and how much these reunion moments mean to us. I spent my father’s 4 long tours of duty in Vietnam watching tv with my mom hoping to catch a glimpse of him on the news and holding our breath every time someone knocked on the door. My wife and kids had the same experience each time I had a remote tour or was deployed and then my wife and I experienced the same thing as parents when our son, a Marine, deployed time and time again to Iraq, Afghanistan and Yemen among other exotic locations. Believe me it isn’t just the family member that serves, it is the entire family and we do it proudly. None of us regrets it and we would all do it again. The Constitution must be protected against all enemies foreign and domestic and if we don’t do it then who will?

This is the most beautiful princess gift to have if loved ones return from Afghanistan and Iraq it is so heart warming to as I to was m married to a military man for 52years and he was sleeping with other people it was the end of my marriage but no regrets as I did have a lot of wonderful years I never would marry ever again after what he did to my children and I but I do not have him I feel sorry for him now
