Darbys have a certain reputation within Britain and all those that are into Gentlemen style. I always wondered why. I knew that this hat was mainly worn by working class Englishmen until post WW2. British society is historically very defined by class not skin pigmentation. Upper, Mid and Workingclass proudly showed of their different accents, clothing styles and attitudes especially towards outsiders. The Derby being a solid hat must have turned it into a working mans first choice, especially in a good old pub brawl turning him into something today called a „Gangsta“, being actually just offensive. Thanks for that missing piece of information for my theory.
