D & C 1 - Preface to The Doctrine and Covenants

Revelation given on 11/01/1831 at a Church Conference, held in Hiram, Ohio
Historical Background: By the fall of 1831, Joseph and Emma were staying with the Johnson family in Hyrum, Ohio. Many revelations had already been received from the Lord through the prophet Joseph Smith yet time had not allowed for their copying and distribution. Missionaries urgently needed copies of these revelations to take on their missions. The Lord instructed the saints to procure a printing press for this purpose and required Joseph to do 2 things:
First, he was directed to receive a revelation dictated by the Lord as a Preface to this compilation of revelations;
Secondly, he was directed to gather an assembly of the saints to review and approve the compilation as a book of scripture, to be used to direct and govern the Lord's church.
At this conference of November 1, 1831, the Lord dictated Section 1 of this compilation, called the Book of Commandments and later changed to the Doctrine and Covenants.

These revelations are a voice of warning from the Lord and will go out to all people to repent and prepare for the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. These proclamations will go to the ends of the earth by the weak and simple to kings and rulers. The Lord's only true and living church upon the face of the earth is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Therefore, search these revelations for whether spoken by the Lord or by His servants the prophets, it is the same. These prophecies and promises are declared by the Lord to be true and they will all be fulfilled.

W. Cleon Skousen is one of my heros. He labored in the scriptures and in the gospel of Jesus Christ and in the history of this country. His contributions pushed the boundaries to further man's knowledge. I am forever grateful for him.

@kathyflinn8070 The First 2000 Years, The Third Thousand Years, The Fourth Thousand Years, Days of the Living Christ 2 volumes, The 5000 Year Leap, The Cleansing of America, Isaiah Speaks to Modern Days. Those are the ones I can name right off the top of my head. I'll have to take a look in my library. There's also a volume on The Constitution and American history.

There's a great book by an LDS author that shows that there is perfect harmony between the prophetic statements concerning the garden of Eden being in Missouri and the Old Testament account concerning the garden of Eden. It's called Canaan, Babylon, and Egypt A Comparative Theological Analysis on Creation sold by Eborn Books and Benchmark Books.

@@JacquelineParentis Dallin H. Oaks, attempted to separate politics from BYU in his dealings with Skousen. During the Oaks administration, Skousen claimed to have been authorized to teach a new course about "Priesthood and Righteous Government", which would be published clandestinely under the name "Gospel Principles and Practices". This course was intended to be for ultra-conservative students to inform them of what to do about communist infiltration. Upon learning of Skousen's intentions, Oaks informed the First Presidency (Spencer W Kimball) that he would not be permitted to teach that course. Skousen was told to stop mixing church doctrine and politics and to stop activities associated with his educational politics-based organization called the Freemen Institute Skousen penned an article, "The Communist Attack on the Mormons," in which he accused critics of "distorting the religious tenet of the Church regarding the Negro and blowing it up to ridiculous proportions" and of serving as Communist dupes. He was against the Black Race having the Priesthood. In 1979, the First Presidency issued a letter against promoting Skousen in LDS wards and stakes by stating, to make certain that neither Church facilities nor Church meetings are used to advertise such events and to avoid any implication that the Church endorses what is said during his lectures. Skousen's proposals included a plan to convert the US Social Security system to private retirement accounts. Skousen also opposed all federal regulatory agencies and argued against the creation of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency. He also wanted to repeal the minimum wage, nullify anti-discrimination laws, sell off public lands and national parks, and end the Federal Reserve System. Spencer W. Kimball, then president of the LDS church, issued an order prohibiting announcements about Skousen's groups from official LDS meetings or publications
