I would have had the party make a group stealth check where everyone rolls stealth and take the number of successes and fails into account against the dracolich
@HowtoRPG7 жыл бұрын
That would be the same practice for myself. But this video was meant to only cover the Hide action.

Make them do the movement, THEN roll stealth. Thief: I want to hide in shadows DM: OK, what are you doing Thief: I sneak up on the BENBG and surprise attack! DM: Roll stealth Thief: 3 DM: The BENBG seems to be looking down at you and says "You looked so cute trying to sneak around with your lit lantern" as he swings his great axe at your neck.

howtod&d - Hi Fred if possible could you do a video on how a wood elf would use 'Mask of the Wild' in a combat round please? I have just started an adventure using a Ranger that has this ability so I would like to understand how to use it and what advantages it gives me. Thanks. 👍🏻

In the end of the video, If thief hadn't failed his hide check, would the other characters had to roll the check as well? And if even one of them fails, then all the party is compromised?

It depends on how a Game Master wants to run the encounter.

I am having a really hard time trying to understand the hide action and stealth. Am I interpreting this wrong or something? How long does this stealth check last, lets assume a player wanted to move sneakily in a dungeon and I had asked for the player to make a stealth check would the score be noted and compared against the enemies who could hear him or be near him? If this interpretation is correct wouldn't the player know the roll and change his actions accordingly or do something else to get one more stealth check to increase his chances to get a higher roll like decide to leave the dungeon and re-enter and make the stealth check again (I know no one would do something this obvious but something along along the same lines maybe?). I am starting to get the feeling of the crouch button in video games with this approach, when the player tries to hide he presses this imaginary ctrl button and a dice is rolled, that feels wrong but I couldn't think something else as for the F Huber's comment "Make them do the movement, THEN roll stealth." the action is not specified so is it the best that I wouldn't allow for a stealth check something like this? Thanks in advance! (editted grammar)

In combat you usually need cover or something to hide in first. Advice your player to move the character first into cover, then they can take the hide action in combat usually as an action and make the dice roll. The Stealth check is compared with the monsters passive perception. The action last until the Character moves again, makes an attack or does something that reveals them. A Stealth check out of combat last as long as a Dungeon Master wants.

@@HowtoRPG Lets assume that there is an heavily guarded artifact in a dungeon and my player wants to get it and he rolled his stealth check poorly wouldn't he go to another room which is much less guarded and makes sometihng that reveals himself and killes the monsters then repeats this untill he gets a high roll? I know this is too specific but I got the feeling that my rouge doing something similar. The only option would be to talk about metagaming or this problem could be solved in other ways?

At 3:30 you said “later on” about Cunning action to Bonus hide... That is a crazy party to be sneaking on a draco lich at Level 1 or stupid to take a brand new rogue to a CR20+ Lair encounter
@HowtoRPG5 жыл бұрын
Yes. It is just an example, not an actual game situation. There is no sneaking up on a Dracolich at any level.

So, let's say you roll a 4+2 = 6 stealth check... Would your character know how bad they are sneaking?
@HowtoRPG6 жыл бұрын
Your talking about metagaming. Normally when a player rolls a dice check the character would not know how well they are doing. With Stealth checks, it's my opinion that there is an argument for a character knowing when they have done really badly with a very low roll as they stumble through the environment. It would be much harder to know if your attempt to sneak is successful if the numerical result is average or very good, because there is no way to assess the other creatures level of perception.

@@HowtoRPG Always have them tell the action, then do the roll for success/fail, or they will alter plans if they know they have a bad roll.

Steve Murphy Sorry, I was just trying to demo Stealth checks. The Rogue had a Stealth check of 7. The Dracolich had a passive perception of 22. The Rogue must score greater than a creatures passive perception on a Stealth check to avoid begin noticed if the creature is not distracted.

@roberttschaefer3 жыл бұрын
@@MaxRavenclaw that was simply a stealth check to enter the cave, not a hide action. Stealth is movement, hiding is hiding. You don’t usually know if your stealth roll worked until you find out that it doesn’t. As far as the player knows, the stealth worked, but it’s likely that the reason the Dracolich moved up to the cave mouth was because it detected something or sensed movement! Stealth checks are rolled against the creatures passive perception. The hide action is separate and may involve either passive or active perception based on the situation (is the monster looking for you, or just walking by).

This video just covers what a player needs to understand with the hide action. What a dungeon master needs to know is much more complex and requires them to make rulings based on a situation and there are many longer videos that cover almost everything involved. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2e0Yptqi750htk kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYqYo6iQbrt4qMk kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYLIl4iZjdWoapY kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooSmZYWbqLWSg9U kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZfUiYiJl9qfZsU kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJuxf5VplLp2q9k kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZ7YaZeJeJeoj5I kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWardapnitiiatU kzbin.info/www/bejne/noGvgJSgqLSHaNk kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJicnp9se5uqmpY kzbin.info/www/bejne/epqknYZ-ZtuJb5I
