Not to be "That Guy" but Persuasion Roll would have been a 21 total, if the Bard really had a +20 on it, and since RAW Criticals only work on Attack Rolls and Death Saves, so this would be a success unless the DC was impossibly high for it

Counter-point: Expertise or not, if the Bard had a +20 to Persuasion, then the game was probably at a point where the party is facing very powerful things with high DCs. So it was probably an "Moderate" skill check with a DC of 22 or something.

@@Zulk_RS Keeping it as specifically 22 would be the DM playing against the Bard, but even if it is high level, this is still just a regular bridge troll This is like raising the DC of a lockpick check on a normal door because the Rogue has Expertise and Reliable Talent, so what would be a 15 DC normally is turned to 25 just to counter the rogue, and then this becomes a Players vs DM game, which unless EVERYONE agrees upon beforehand, is considered as one of the most toxic types of playstyles

@@ShankMugen The DC being 22 would actually not be playing against the Bard because with a +20 to persuasion, unless the Bard rolled a NAT1 (like in the video) they would have succeed. Why would the DM throw a regular bridge troll against a high level party? If they did that, there's nothing stopping the party from just destroying the bridge troll and moving on.

@@ShankMugen You cannot persuade an indifferent or hostile creature to perform an action that is at a significant sacrifice or could cause significant harm to itself. (DMG 244) The bridge troll is asking a favor in order for the adventurering bard to travel, which is indifferent at best, but more likely hostile or at the very least demanding. The attitude of a creature during an interaction changes depending on how a player interacts with a creature. The attempt to persuade a creature at all can change that creature's opinion of the player and change the willingness to follow your persuasion check. The bard was very hostile towards the troll, being demeaning and arrogant. So even if the troll is indifferent, the attitude would be hostile for the sake of this particular interaction. The DMG is, simultaneously, the most useless and the most important book for learning D&D. On one hand, there is a mix between half-baked (thankfully most are expanded on in Xanathar's) mechanics and lots of tips and tricks that will vary greatly in mileage. (These tips and tricks might be useful, but it really depends on the DM. An extremely new DM is going to learn the game their way for their table, and an old DM is likely going to gloss over anything that doesn't fit their particular vision of the game.) On the other hand, you've got chase mechanics, planar mechanics, social encounters, tracking, pace of travel, running a business, attunement slots, identifying magic items, how far away random encounters start, and much more. This stuff is all player specific mechanics which makes it so frustrating that it isn't in the PHB. So while I think there is a lot about social interactions that players and DMs need to learn, I blame the DMG itself for why most people handle these interactions with poor understanding of their intent. Rules as Intended; going back as far as AD&D 2e, you cannot ever make a creature act outside it's own characteristics. This is why alignment was so important in older editions, often being the limiter on charm spells and psionic powers, and this is why persuasion checks cannot be used to force any creature to forego it's own interests for the sake of the party's interests. The person you are talking to made it about the DC, but it isn't about the DC at all, the DC on attitude alone is theoretically static. It is about the creature's attitude towards the player limiting the effectiveness of a passing charisma (persuasion) check. The bard could roll a nat 20, the check would have the same outcome, and the DC, unmodified, doesn't exist in this instance due to how the bard behaved in the interaction. It is an automatic failure.

I asked my DM if the ancient red dragon was targeting me with a fire breath or targeting next to me. He said he was targeting me. He failed a wisdom save with a DC of 22 to break through my sanctuary spell and the attack failed entirely because there wasnt anyone else within range of the attack. Didnt need to use my uncanny dodge lol
