"Well, let me fill you in on this" followed by specific information on direction and the time of the next sunset absolutely killed me. Sullivan about dying of laughter as a result is also hilarious. Never mind. Mike in with the game breaking detail about his keen mind ability just stopping Luke in his tracks for a bit is now the best bit. That little bit of insight into Mike's tabaxi character is fascinating. Ooh, Tiddles threatening the guard is brilliant. "What were you rolling for?" Jane with the expression someone makes when their kid or pet has done something and you ask "what did you break/do?". I love that I can hear someone laugh in the background when Mike reveals "observant" as his last skill/spell. Neon pink being a color wild enough to kill the captain is hysterical. Mechanically intensive games... than D&D, particularly when he just gets to roleplay opposite other characters or NPCs, and as illustrated here, he's got a keen eye for story details on top of that, being the only one of the party who figured the connection to the symbol and the smuggling background at the end, deducing it was Thieve's Cant.)

(Alternatively, for Halloween maybe a Pokéthulhu one shot? A parody of both Pokémon and Cthulhu mythos and has been described as 'a surprisingly playable joke game'). Honestly I kind of just want that because of how hard this group go on their costuming, and the idea of them figuring out costumes for... Basically anime characters aged somewhere between 10 and 14 depending on exactly what they decide to do with it. Also wouldn't hate it if one of the gang started doing a solo game on camera - Ideally Ironsworn (Norse fantasy) or something based off of it (Ironsworn: Starforged (Sci-fi, by same team as Ironsworn) and Iron Valley (A game inspired by video games such as Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley) are the two I'm most familiar with but there may be other full conversions rather than shallow hacks), but basically anything can be done solo using Mythic GME, and in the 'journalling game' space, rather than the oracle space, it would be fun to see Jane play 1000 Year Old Vampire, or Lichdom on camera as a one shot.

Rules note: prone does *not* include incapacitated. The incapacitated condition is the one that means you can't take actions. (A few spells do just that; most causes of incapacitated are via stun or paralyzed.) Harpies can fly, but being knocked prone for a flyer can be interpreted as being knocked out of the air, so it's still a disruption to what it's doing. IIRC there's a rule about prone for flyers if you wanted to look it up. If I wanted to give the PCs a chance, I might have had the harpy roll a concentration save as if it was concentrating on a spell, since continuing a song without interruption is pretty similar to maintaining a spell. This amnesia idea is pretty cool, but IDK if I like the mechanic of not knowing what an ability is going to do until you activate it, even for non-spells. Like, I can see spells being mysterious arcane formulae in your mind and you don't know what effect they'll produce. But mundane abilities like inquisitive rogue's Ear for Deceit (can't roll lower than an 8 on an insight check if you're checking for lies) isn't something that makes any sense to happen when you're trying to heal someone or attack. I guess your style is more about fun with a silly mechanic for the players at the table, even if that means having the in-world story be silly and less realistic sometimes. For a monk, I can see that as kind of half way between spells and mundane abilities. Maybe you don't know that you have Step of the Wind (double your jump distance, and dash or disengage as a bonus action), but if you *do* try to call upon your Ki to jump, it would work? But that's highly subject to metagaming from players who know what monks can do, and definitely less silly. In world if the character knows what monks are, and figures out they are one, they could start testing their powers by trying all kinds of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon stuff. Also, did amnesia make them forget about short rests and hit dice? Take an hour and heal up, my dude, instead of running around on 6 hit points! Narratively, short-rest healing is using bandages and tending wounds, but mechanically doesn't require the medicine skill. (Medicine can give extra healing with a healer's kit, IIRC.) For insightful fighting, the rogue makes an insight check. It's the harpy that makes the deception check, not the rogue. The normal range of an unarmed strike is it's "reach", which is 5ft for a human. On a grid, that allows you to hit things in adjacent squards. For a bugbear PC it would be 10 ft, thanks to their long-limbed racial ability that adds 5ft reach to melee attacks made on your turn. So yes, normal logic and intuition give basically the right answer here, although maybe on the short side vs. 5e mechanics. Narratively, 5 ft reach with most melee attacks isn't long arms, it's also moving around within your 5ft grid square. How does one attack from a monk do 4d8? With no Str or Dex modifier to damage? Normally a monk's damage die is a 1d10 at 17th level and up, lower at lower levels. Was this an improvised bonus for the jump attack? (Monks don't hit hard with each hit, but they make lots of attacks. They get Extra Attack at 5th level like other martials, but they can make one or two more attacks as a bonus action. One for free, or two if they spend a ki point for flurry of blows. Which again seems like something your body would remember how to do once you start fighting, and not randomly use your action to remove charm or frighten effects, for example (Stillness of Mind, the 7th level ability).) The Tabaxi racial Cat's Claws unfortunately just makes the damage 1d6+Str slashing instead of the usual 1+Str bludgeoning; it doesn't make it a finesse weapon. But especially for a rogue, I like that homebrew / rule-of-cool that they can use the claws to make a Dex-based attack, e.g. to slash a throat, perhaps even getting Sneak Attack damage. Keen Mind is a feat, not a spell. It's not a magical boost to recall, it's a mundane savant-like memory ability. Same for Observant. It might have been more sensible (but less silly) to put passive abilities in a separate part of the character sheet from active abilities that you can do as an action. The +1 Wis or Int from a half-feat like Observant should already be factored in to the base stats, I assume. Just to be clear, it's not wrong to be casual about the rules. And especially in an actual-play it's often better to make something up for now than to stop and look something up. For me personally, I like the 5e rules and seeing people come up with creative ways to apply them. (I'm a big fan of Emily Axford, for example.) So this style of play is not *my* favourite, but there's still plenty I enjoyed in terms of fun, and the novelty factor of random abilities. And I liked how the party and DM improvised ways that random passive feats like keen mind could be actively useful, like pointing to north and having that work as a distraction. update: By the second half of this, after some backstory reveals and more in-character RP, I started to enjoy it a lot more as the story was starting to come together. --- Create Bonfire is a damage cantrip. It's magical fire, not just logs! At least that's my narrative understanding of it. It won't work *well* against an octopus since creatures in water get resistance to fire damage, but just having it totally fail with no roll seems a bit unfair. Unless that's the DM's way of enforcing the "on the ground that you can see" targeting requirement: if you can't see the seafloor under the octopus and/or it's not within 5ft of the bottom, there's nowhere to cast it that would work. Unless you allow casting it on the ocean surface, which is stretching the bounds of "ground" a bit. Also, like all cantrips, it gets extra damage dice for higher level characters. If they can cast 3rd-level spells they're at least 5th, so it would be at least 2d8 damage (but still nothing if the target makes their save.) The DM said it's "maybe for the best", like damaging the octopus would make it angry? Like they should be trying to do things other than damage during this combat? IDK. --- Attack rolls normally add your proficiency bonus, not just your ability modifier. e.g. at 1:38:30 a paladin throwing a spear is indeed Strength, but the attack roll modifier is +Str + proficiency. Paladins are proficient in simple and martial weapons, which includes everything. Interestingly, smite spells like Branding Smite work on any weapon attack, including a ranged weapon or thrown melee weapon. Unlike the paladin class ability Divine Smite which RAW only works on "melee weapon attacks", which means any melee attack that isn't a spell attack (confusingly including unarmed strikes despite those not being an "attack with a melee weapon"). A level 5 paladin would have Extra Attack, so they'd get 2 attacks from the attack action. ---- Yes, blinded is a nasty condition. This is why there aren't rules for doing a called shot to the eyes (or for chopping off limbs); only a few classes and monsters get abilities that can blind as part of an attack. Because having monsters do that to the PCs would suck, and having PCs do that every time is way overpowered. Don't octopuses have two eyes, though? --- Spell attacks can crit just like physical attacks. That nat 20 firebolt should have been 4d10 damage. (2d10 is the normal damage for characters from 5th to 10th level.)

This was so much fun to watch! I hope I can find some other players who'd be willing to do a oneshot like this.

Fist of The North Star that is who Jane's character is. Also, was that "The Royal Voice" and the adventure turned into Pirates of The Caribbean at the end. Great. I love my D&D with all the references. Doing something or anything to The Captains hat, Space Station 13.

So nobody is gonna talk about how beautiful Luke's voice is when he sings about the crevasse ? Because WOW. I mean, i know he is a musician but still. Now i too want to go into the crevasse

1:11:09 He rolls a 1 and you roll a 20. You reach for the rope to tie him up. As he tries to run away, he trips over a small crack in the floor, falling headlong into the ropes and manages to find himself trussed up like a holiday goose for the roasting.

I feel like the captain could have lived and still protected their identities. Who is going to believe a crazy sea captain trying to describe a color that has never been seen? His credibility would have tanked so hard nobody would believe anything he says.
