im not trying to defend D&D Digital at all, but here it seems you can cast spells directly in the game and it will show it to you, where Talespire is just DNDbeyond connected and will roll the dice, so you have to have the website open and either alt-tab or have a second screen and it's just more step to make it work where here it's all integrated but Im guessing it's going to have a lot of expansion to buy if you want to have this and that module

If you wanna make a VVT in Unreal 5, I recomment making either the Pathfinder, Divinity, or Baldur's gate into a proper editable campaign builder that can allow DM's to build campaigns that don't require an active DM. Now that would be something. This isn't going to be very helpful for most DND groups, as not everyone is playing on a supplied next-gen gaming laptop, the idea of "system requirements" for a DND game that still requires a DM and all of the above, is kinda silly to me. Either make it a video game, or make it 2D... there still isn't a single all-inclusive VVT that has every feature baked into it, down to map creation, world-building, ETC. They all require integration with multiple different apps/resources, lots of importing, etc. You're just improving the graphics, which will just mean some players won't be able to run it.

They've already said homebrew/3rd party content wont be supported in this VTT, which automatically makes it a hard pass for me. My table, and I'd imagine many others, use a ton of house rules during play that this system just won't support. Official WotC products only.
@afreestate8466 Жыл бұрын
Love how little they actually show of the vtt
@perianh Жыл бұрын
They're completely missing the point with this product. Yes, it is pretty, but it will only be suitable for playing official DND modules. The amount of customization must be INSANE to build your own modules, the devs will never pull it off. And this amount of details is actually bad for the experience. Much of DND happens in the head even when you play on VTT. When you have every little detail drawn for you here you have no room for imagination.

Convenience… that seems like the wrong objective. But let’s go with that. What’s convenient about needing an expensive laptop or similar,a subscription, and needing to do everything with an input device? “We just want everyone to play the way they want too..” hah
@Youdotty Жыл бұрын
How is this more convenient for DMs. Now they have to prep the session and build 3D maps.

Why is it always them against the community with that "both sides trying to one-up each other"? It's supposed to be a completementary collaboration, not sides pit against each other.

he meant "one-up each other" in the complementary collaborative way. Not in a hostile way

Use Roll20, Foundry, or Talespire. Stay away from WOTC as much as you can. They're on the route to bleed you dry.
@Eladelia Жыл бұрын
There are better online platforms for ttrpg's out there already (e.g. Foundry). No need to wait!
@user-jq1mg2mz7o Жыл бұрын
you can already do that without an overpriced, poorly optimised storefront that WotC will be making. you can find groups online already using free tools and play with free tools. or even check your IRL area like at community areas, libraries or schools for groups that want to play
@Darkguiver Жыл бұрын
Talespire is still better, visually and gameplay wise. The pro here is that they still made the DM in control, making couch potatoes still viable lol. The actual physical figures are used in game, and still have communication with each player. Cons are they waited for someone to do it better before they release an inadequate version of it. Talespire doesn't give you this vibe tho, but you can easily set up a discord chat, the figures and animations are better, the fact every inch of detail can be applied there and not on the creators of this genre can do it better just raises the question if they are taking our money or wasting resources?

"fun, convenience and authenticity" - cut to the scene where to move bartender he needs to move him over the counter, and not in hidden way, but "physically" placing him on a counter for a moment...

Yeah, it costs money to play, but it costs a lot to develop and maintain. And it's not like they are trying to get rid of traditional ways of playing. This just adds a new level for folks who like this type of venue
@rtesdahl Жыл бұрын
This looks neat. As for just wanting to sit down and throw an adventure together, Shard tabletop is great for that. You can spend hours to get things dialed in perfectly for your game. But you can also throw together a one-shot in minutes...or even on-the-fly during the game.

"Convenience" -> Proceeds to show multiple people sitting in one room, playing DnD and each of them is just looking into its own laptop. Omegalul moment right there.

I'm not a big fan of virtual tabletops. They're fun once in a while, but prefer theater of the mind with pictures and maps as needed. Has worked just fine for me.

It's difficult to look at this in a positive (heck, neutral) light, given everything that WotC has been fumbling lately. At worst, this is a blatant cash-grab that very clearly is/was intended to monopolize on everything they've done with microtransactions + content on Beyond and the OGL changes they were trying to implement. At best, this is a way for them to gain a foothold in the online/VTT market, and potentially leverage its use through exclusive content, microtransaction, and/or subscriptions.
