I've always viewed that turning into a drider is the biggest insult lolth shows to someone because it's basically her saying, "You're so weak I have to step in and give you this power"

Lolth has always been one of my least favorite Deities in fiction. However, not only did you personally point out why I dislike her as your on, but also came up with a sensible solution that I might use in the future myself. This video earned a like an sub.

Lolth is my favorite d&d goddess. She is so much more then a Demon lord. She needs to be an apex god and not mid level. Her following transcends Toril.

Lolth is definitely a tricky being. I like how you restructured her, especially making becoming a thrull as an honor.

So drittz is actually a chosen of lolth, the books go into detail on it but the long and short is she likes him because his presence causes instability and chaos within traditional Drow society
@itslegendlore2 жыл бұрын
Oh I actually didn’t know that xD
@foolycoolytheband2 жыл бұрын
@@itslegendlore yeah in the more recent books it was revealed that lolth is actually some sort of chaos goddess. Basically all the infighting in Drow society was just as much about grabbing power as it was a form of worship, but eventually it became so common place that it became the norm of their society, so when drittz came around and denounced it and all the Drow houses united to kill him she decided to make him her chosen just to fuck with them and cuase more discord.
@lauraw252610 ай бұрын
Yeah but I hate that angle personally cause it means anything can be justified 'because chaos' and it makes Lloth a lot less terrifying. More frustrating than evil.@@foolycoolytheband

I too have had issues with how Lolth and the drow are just characterized as comically evil for seemingly no reason, so I tried to write her as a more tangible evil. In my homebrew setting, she is, or rather, was, the patron deity of the dark elves, but a manifestation of their rampant racial supremacy complex. Originally, she was a normal dark elf who, like the rest of her kin, was sent underground by the other elves in a conflict called the Occult War. The reason behind the conflict was that the dune and jungle elves, who emphasized arcane and primal magic respectively, were jealous of the popularity the divine elves enjoyed among humanity. So, they waged a massive war to drive them so far underground that they would be forgotten. This created a bitter resentment against the other elves that eventually lead to a general hatred for any intelligent being that wasn't a dark elf, which is the environment Lolth was born into. She declared herself Spider Queen, and created a cult centered on herself that promised to restore the glory of the dark elves while enslaving or exterminating all other mortal kindreds in the world. She then managed to fight and deceive her way into becoming a demon prince, then created an environment of fervent competition among her cult, which had by that point become state religion, to prevent anyone from trying to supplant her. Basically, I leaned into what I found the most fascinating part of drow lore, their racial supremacy, and turned it up to eleven, while also incorporating some real world tyrant behavior of creating bureaucratic instability to limit the ambitions of underlings. Eventually, though she was beaten into the dirt in an event called the War of the Two Queens, so called because Lolth and several demon lords she had allied herself with were defeated by a coalition of other entities led by Eilistraee and, of all gods, Tiamat. Okay, got that all written down, now I just need to find the next video of yours to comment on.

Wait, did you just made Lolth… reasonable? 😱 Cool approach, still it would be weird to elven society if Corellon was dead. Maybe he went into a deep slumber which no god can wake him from, and Eilistraree is looking for an ancient song that can wake him up. On the other hand, due to trauma, Lolth hardened her hearth and sees her daughter’s hope as futile, being this the reason of the schism between the two. She thinks her daughter is naive and clinging to hope, while Eilistraree is saddened that her mother gave up. The elves could blame Lolth for their god’s silence and thus the animosity between drow and elves, but they’re more ok with Eilistraree because she’s trying to fix things.

I really like Lolth as a villain, but this redesign is cool too. It has a lot of drama and sets up an interesting dynamic for the Drow and the surface Elves where both sides have reasons to distrust or even hate each other but neither one is totally in the right. It also allows for more complex, nuanced interactions between Drow and non-Drow characters.
@itslegendlore Жыл бұрын
Agreed, I like to depict Lolth as the “the strong must be willing to do what others may not” type, and is very protective of the drow which sadly leads to a lot of mistrust and xenophobia of the surface folk, but that leaves it open for bridges to be built Drow society can be harsh and brutal and they can treat their enemies mercilessly, but I wanted to move away from “they’re an evil race” Angle of it all
@Florian07992 жыл бұрын
That is all really interesting for my new half moon elf half eladrin knowledge cleric of Sehanine. Her entire backstory resolves around Lolth's betraying and the acceptance of the children of Elistraee who are referred to as silk elves not drow. And now the Drow allied with Duergar to rally a crusade against her elven country.

I disagree with the drider. It is a bad thing because Lolth had to help that drow become more powerful so that means he or she was not good enough to serve her. Which Drow realyl detest. "Uhh look at them they needed Lolth's help to even survive another day."
@itslegendlore2 жыл бұрын
i can definitely see that, for me personally to make her worshipers look more like her i see as a great honor hence why i kept it in my game, but Lolth over all is less intense and sadistic in my game as a whole xP

When a male gets turned into a spider, his existence is nothing but pain. Every movement is agony. It is not an honor. They hate being a Spider center center. they must obey. And they all want to be free. Some of the centaur spiders are very old but powerful as the day they were turned into spiders centaur some of them hate their goddess. They remember when it was alike before they all worshiped her some of them fear her if they get back into people, they would worship her again.

Yeah i dont understand how its a "punishment" to be turned into what Lolth is, half dark elf half spider. Thats not a punishment if you worship Lolth.
@chrisnichols90142 жыл бұрын
Does this mean she secretly hates the form she's in and wants to make them as miserable as he is? Hmmm...
@goulgoulgoul2 жыл бұрын
She inflicts her followers with the same punishement she recieved for her transgression. It makes sense that she would view this as a fall from grace since this was the punishment given to her when she lost everything. It's also worth noting that a lot of Lolth followers actually worship her out of fear rather than love, so looking like her is not something they would be thrilled with I imagine.
@zoeylowe3419 Жыл бұрын
I do like a lot of your interpretation of Lolth - however, I do wonder how Lolth would manifest if you approached her as a Narcissist Mother archetype or from a Marxist-Feminist twisted version of liberation ideology. I feel like Lolth’s nature is many things, marred by trauma and survivalist instinct, rife with debate on How Best To Resolve This. All this being said, I’m glad you approach her as an actual concept instead of just sanding her down as a Sexy Spider Lady.
@itslegendlore Жыл бұрын
I love those two other depictions you listed, they give so much more depth to her and can provide much better philosophical exploration for her followers :)
@zoeylowe3419 Жыл бұрын
@@itslegendlore I think a lot about how Lolth gifted the drow red eyes to be fearsome and how that correlates with certain interpretations of Medusa’s gift from Athena - how to become a monster to protect oneself from violation. I’m sure that Lolth tells herself that every torture she bestows upon her followers is In Their Best Interest and will Make Them Stronger. And if it simultaneously affirms her need to feel power over others? What the harm? (Lots of harm; to be clear) Good commentary on our current times as to which is the better path, and particularly presenting her against Eilistraee, the moral shades of each option. As well as how abuse can be cyclical, and what is needed to truly break those chains of oppression. (Eilistraee refuses to kill her mother despite saying she cares for the drow - an enlightened stance or cowardice?) And all of that is nothing related the commentary that could be made about purity cultures - (in patrilineal societies, the need to control female sexuality is present bc otherwise how can you affirm one’s son is really one’s son? A lot of these sexual anxieties are not present in matrilineal societies bc the need to control female sexuality in regards to property inheritance is a non issue when it’s a woman giving birth to a girl rather than a women giving birth to a son for a father.) Anyways, lots of rich story telling wrinkles when it comes to the drow. I haven’t even scratched the surface.
