I could see her clerics having healing spells too, but maybe modified. They could heal the wounds, stopping the bleeding, mending the skin, but the healed still suffer the pain of that wound (maybe for as long as it would have taken to heal typically through medicinal means). A live victim can continue to suffer from their former wounds or new ones, while a dead one's pain is gone.

My planned cleric of Loviatar's healing spells hit you with the pain of healing in rapid time + the pain you *would* have had healing it naturally, so you pay for the instant heal with double the pain :p

I'm playing a follower of Loviatar. He is a Yuan-ti pureblood, the only one of his kind because born of an experiment. Since birth, he's been suffering because of diformities (mainly the scales partially covering his skin), but also psychological pain since he doesn't belong, he was created, and he looks different. He was raised in way of Loviatar, in the Chirch of the Scarlet Hooks, amongst other orphans he never managed to befriend. We are almost at the end of a 3 years long campaign, and now he is considering rejecting Loviatar. He believes he has suffered enough, and his traveling companions have shown him other ways. So now, he wants to help her change too...

@@FathersUnited-fu Haha, well, the final battle and end of campaign is in 3 weeks. But here is my expectations for him if he survives: - Bring his arcane focus back to the Church of the Scarlet Hooks (The focus is an artefact in the form of a cat-o-nine-tail) - Join the Religion of Ilmater instead (still a god of pain but kind of the opposite of Loviatar) - Build and manage an orphanage (since he was raised as one). - Also, I started the campaign with only offensive spells. And i'm planning on ending it with only support and healing spells.

Great portrayal of the Goddess of Pain :) My current PC is a warforged cleric created by a now extinct Temple of Loviatar. His interest in pain and pleasure being how he learns about the world around him, and using it to help teach others.

Fun little fact about Loviatar: She, along with Mielikki, were actually brought over to the Forgotten Realms from planet Earth's Finnish pantheon, along with a host of other faiths like the Egyptian gods (The Mulhorandi pantheon), the Mesopotamian gods (The Untheric pantheon), the Norse gods (Who practically have a heaven all to themselves), the Celtic gods (Including Silvanus) and the Greek gods and many others. Some of these gods ended up joining together to form their own pantheons as they sought alliances with likeminded gods to not fade into obscurity. Mielikki and Silvanus get along swimmingly, for example, while Loviatar is as described here, getting along with Bane, Bhaal and Shar. In the Finnish pantheon, Loviatar is the blind daughter of the god of death. She gives birth to the Nine Deadly Diseases of the world: Rickets, Gout, Colic, Consumption, Ulcer, Scab, Cancer, Plague and finally Envy, who is banished from her realm to become the scourge of mankind.

In historical publications, the AD&D 2nd Edition-era "FR16 - The Shining South" contains details of Dambrath, an nation dominated (in more than one sense of the word!) by drow half-elf priestesses of Loviatar - this could be useful as inspiration for DMs/GMs. (This supplement also details Halruaa, a "non-evil" magocracy - a contrast to Thay - and Luiren, an nation of halflings.)

I'm planning on playing a Dhampir Conquest Paladin/Undead Warlock who had their arm cut off when they were turned into a vampire spawn. She accepted an offer to break free of the vampire's control by becoming a paladin of Loviatar, but in exchange, her phantom limb pain is made extreme, only able to be numbed by drinking blood. In her Form of Dread, she would slash with her phantom limb instead of biting.
@tidaltorrent2 жыл бұрын
Since I really enjoy your depiction of Loviatar, how would you flavor any healing abilities of a cleric or paladin of Loviatar? While it would seem out of character to heal, I still want to help heal my party. I had the idea of the pain numbs, but that seems closer to Ilmater to me.

Amazing video! Great inspiration for a Cleric I'm making soon. I intend on making a LE Asmiar who was once a slave but became a follower of Loviatar. They are taken from their parents at a young age due to their divine nature and are brought into the clergy to raise them on Loviatars beliefs. They then grow up believing sadism and masichism are but the truest forms of devotion. Not only is pain the purpose for living but it is very reason why life continues. In combat they prioritize healing their allies so that their strife may continue or to ensure those deserving suffer through spells like bane/bestow curse. Still writing up the character, but this video really helped flesh out some character ideas for me.

She is tho! If you read her dogma, there are actually things like "Unswerving cruelty will turn all folk against you." and "Kindnesses are the best companions to hurts." in it, plus it's a lot about punishing those who hurt people for no good reason. So tbh, if I were to play a loviatan cleric, I'd lean into the inquisitor/executioner type of character. If you rephrase the dogma enough, some of her followers might even be Lawful Good by definition.

Damn. Now I wanna make a cultish Hellraiser style campaign. The players have to escape from a planar prison after being kidnapped by a cult of Loviatar. The leaders of the cult are basically the cenobytes & the players have to do some questing & whatnot to kill the cenobytes so they can escape before being sacrificed to Loviatar. If/when they're captured, they get tortured instead of killed, softening them up for a planned ultimate sacrifice that would bring Loviatar or an Avatar of her to the Forgotten Realms.

Maybe I just missed something but wouldn't death be, maybe not bad, but unsought after by worshippers of Loviatar? I mean granted there is not a torturer domain cleric, but death is an end of pain. Wouldn't a worshipper of Loviatar rather ideally indefinitely prolong suffering/torture of a victim rather than just straight up murder. Maybe I am just thinking too hard. I mean like you said there will always be more pain and maybe causing, an assumably agonizing, death is like a cartharsis, peak pain, or something.
@itslegendlore23 күн бұрын
@@cubert13 I can agree with that, to me it depends on what it is that lies after death. Is it endless suffering in the hells of consumption via necromancy etc
@cubert1323 күн бұрын
I suppose that is true, I was thinking of death being more finite. I did not consider that often death is not the end of one's story in DnD.
