Got a Rogue that likes to break into homes and "do crime" whenever the possibility presents itself. He hasn't been the most selective in his targets. They're in an outlaw town. Think Thieves' World's Sanctuary. Breaks in a random house, doesn't roll great on stealth inside. Is confronted by an old man: long grey beard, black housecoat, long black night cap with stars and moons on it matching the robe, and house slippers coming out of the kitchen with a snack. "Well, seems like I have an uninvited guest. You should be more discerning in your choice of whose homes you desecrate. Perhaps tonight will prove to serve as lesson for the future." Fails his save. "Now get out before I decide to do something more...malicious. " Cursed. Unless you use your entire movement speed each turn your steps make loud squeaking noises (like wet sneakers on linoleum). They'll have to purchase a Remove Curse from a temple or scroll to get rid of it.

Shut down a DM one here. Years ago, a friend was running a 3.5e game, I was playing a Human Duskblade and the other player was a Half-Elf Knight, we were 6th levelat the time. The DM decided that he was going to bring a DMPC and showed me her character sheet, a Wild Elf Healer class (Minatures Handbook) that was 8th level that had more feats, skills, and magic items then the Knight and Duskblade combined, and was a werewolf. The DM also planned on using the hybrid for stats for all forms because "it was easier and made her more powerful." The DM proceeded to tell us that the DMPC would be the party Healer, tank, damage dealer, and face. We asked what our job was, and he said support the DMPC and make sure she doesn't die. Our first battle breaks and the DMPC changes for and charges in, against a creature whose attacks counted as silver for overcoming damage reduction. The Knight & Duskblade sit down on stumps, pull out rations, and have lunch. The DM goes full freak out and starts screaming at us that his character is going to die if we don't get in there and fight. We refuse and he threatens to kill our characters. We explain how the DMPC doesn't need us because she's a Healer, damage dealer, and tank and how we are just along for the ride. And we got up and left

I'm a paid dm for the local game shop so I get all kinds in. A good 1/3 of my job really comes down to managing people whether it's explaining how the game works, how abilities function or the general rules. Most of it is small assistance and course correction to keep everything on track. But then you get Those Players. Either they've read every dnd reddit feed, seen too many "how to break level 3 dnd with one easy trick" videos or some incorrect meme online. Typically it's a polite but firm "that's not how it works and I can explain it after game if you'd like" or " we are playing standard array and starting equipment in fairness to all players. You cannot have 3 rare magic items". My most recent issue was a player that INSISTED that a person is indeed an object and that he was going to create water as soon as an enemy had opened their mouth. I had explained to him all the ways to the contrary but I could see he was just looking to argue so I said "OK fine you do so" later in the round the enemy pirate caster was up and moved but did nothing else. Then came that guys turn. "I am gonna run up the side here and cast firebolt" he said and then I replied " OK firebolt has a verbal component and the enemy caster was waiting for you to open your mouth. They have cast create water. Your lungs are now filled with water". The look of pure anger and realization on his face when I did that was just perfect. He tried to argue that the caster couldn't do that to which I replied "Why not? You can it seems and the other caster thought it was a great idea!" player didn't try to do "Fun" uses of spells with me after that though still show up time to time. He's been getting better albeit slowly.

​@RayneGrimm1 idk, my party killed a wendigo by getting a Grappling hook stuck in its antlers and dragging it up some stairs until it got stuck and executed, and I recently killed a whole bunch of pirates by attaching a feather token of anchor summoning to an arrow; pretty sure it's not meant to be used like that, but it's such a vaguely described item, my DM let it slide. The summon water cantrip has recently come up in my current campaign and it was shut down by the dm straight away.

In our old high school game, we had two players who just could not get along. They were constantly arguing, both in- and out-of-character, and their loud squabbling got on everyone's nerves. Our DM put a curse on them that merged their characters into one body. The merged body could only act if they both agreed on what they should do, otherwise they just stood there. Eventually they learned to work together out of necessity.

There are plenty of resources online for how to make characters, understand the rules, and many many DnD shows that are just people recording/streaming their game. My 2 major suggestions are JoCat's "Crap Guide to DnD" series, even though its a joke it can still be mildly educational, and Mathew Covile's "Running the Game" which is more for DMs but that info can apply anywhere and he has a few videos dedicated to players too.

I’ve got a hell of a good one! But beware, this one might be long. So, me and my party were doing a completely home brew campaign (written by me and DM), and we arrived at a dwarven town where my tiefling berserker got into a barfight and our cleric kicked ass at karaoke to the tune of our bard shredding a magical electric guitar. Anyways, outside the bar, the DM described a thunderous boom and a flare of red light. The party, consisting of myself as the primary DPS, cleric, rogue, bard, fighter, and that guy (TG). TG has 3 god damn characters: his normal form, a half-tiefling human with fire magic and passive battle regeneration, as well as proficiency in all manner of combat. He has two different creatures inside of him he can choose to become at will: a violent, OP Balor, and an *immortal* angel. Note that TG, during every encounter or cutscene, *HAD* to make it about himself like he was the MC. He is also very quick to attack without thought (this will be important very shortly) Back to the aforementioned explosion. We go outside and see a large black rock, surrounded by a purple mist. The meteor landed on a small group of people, so the surrounding area was covered in blood. As we walked up to the meteor to investigate, TG runs up and slashes at the meteor with his sword, for some reason completely unknown to us. The DM begins to laugh and describes how the meteor split open, and a shadow spilled out of the crack. What TG just did, was unleash a monster the DM designed specifically to kill him. A primordial shadow demon with complete physical and magical immunity. TG runs up and tried to slash it, to no avail. He turns into his demon form and keeps trying to attack it. As he’s getting his ass kicked, we all collectively agree to *not step in* because it appears to be completely invulnerable. Eventually, the monster slashes at TG with its claws, instantly putting him to 7HP. TG switches into his angel form, and is *immediately* eaten by the monster, and spat out in his human form, the monster having completely absorbed the immortal angel. TG begins to freak out and turns back into the Balor to send out his strongest attacks, but obviously nothing happens. One other thing that TG has is that if his human form dies, his other creatures come out and have two hours to find a living host to possess before they completely die. So, TG’s human dies, and shadow monster escapes, leaving Balor completely distressed, so he attempts to possess a fucking *dwarf guard captain* and gets us all arrested. One VERY LONG INTERROGATION and prison fight later, Balor possesses a rat and starts hitting on our cleric. So, my tiefling, who is MARRIED TO THE CLERIC, grabs the rat and brings him into the forest, where I crush it and explode into a colossal pillar of fire, completely annihilating TG (this is a very powerful homebrew ability, and takes an organ to discharge) Sorry for the long story, this was just too priceless to not mention. He threw a tantrum and started screaming and pointing fingers, it was so funny. DM just told him to get out and not come back.

Me tiefling has complete subjugation of fire, and can use heat lightning for bonus damage in attacks, our bard has a (non-suctioning) black hole for a head, so he can use space abilities… everyone was broken AF, but we all told him that it was a horrible idea to let the guy have TWO OP creatures he can turn into at will.

We had a trouble warlock who never paid attention, didn't talk with the DM about their backstory to make sure it meshes with the lore of the world (legit we asked one day the deal of the warlocks deity and he said HE had no idea what the warlock was even talking about) the warlock had a curse and so our paladin casted lesser restoration to remedy it The DM goes on to say "As you put your had in the cursed mar-" gets cut off by warlock saying "Yeah man, so you caat the spell and you feel a dark eldritch pressence over your shoulder and whispers fill your head, nearly driving you to insanity till MY god Atherius yell at the whispers to "Leave this poor soul alone!" and you collapse from the other wordly interaction." we just sat there dumbfounded that this guy had the gaul to talk over the DMs description after all the shit he'd done previously after a few seconds of akward silence goes "Yeah none of that happens, the mark fades abit and warlock you feel slightly better, paladin you're fine" warlock was pretty salty about it and complained after the session to us about how "The DM overruled his characters moment" needless to say, no one backed him up additionally, we all came to a vote and had him kicked which was a good call....heard stories later on of him sexually harrassing a female player in a diffrent group, now he's banned from the discord servers as a whole

Not sure if I've already posted this story, but here we go. A couple years or so ago, I was running a short mini-campaign to get a couple new players familiar with the game. Well,, we had a guy join the game on session two I think. He rolled up a rogue, and almost immediately started doing really dumb things. Attempting to pickpocket quest npcs in town square, in full daylight. He tried to steal from or seduce pretty much every npc he came across. Sometimes both at once. And in the inevitable circumstancethat he got caught, would try to kill the offending npc. Not surprisingly, he caused nothing but trouble, and Manipulated the cleric into thinking she had to pay his bail, because yaknow. He's in the party, and she's supposed to be devout. Entirely sessions would get derailed because this guy was so determined to steal absolutely everything. "It's what my character would do" was his reasoning, of course. Now I'd pulled him aside and told him this wasn't going to fly. This was a campaign to get the new players introduced to the mechanics. I also pulled the two new ones aside and let them know that his behavior wasn't okay and asked if they wanted me to put a stop to it. Of course, they did. Next session rolls around and I jump right in, narrating how clerics deity appears before the party and tells cleric that there was no rules in their worship that dictated she had to bail out a stupid neutral idiot. That angered the roguey rogue. A lot. He then asks to pickpocket the deity. A deity staring right at him no less. Yes, surely a success would teach that deity a lesson. He failed, and he failed hard. Nat 1 hard. Instead of pickpocketiny, his fingers grazed her.. behind.. Enraged, the deity lifted him into the air, and asked if he really was so stupid as to try pickpocketing a friggin goddess. Sarcastically, he said yes. And that's all I needed. This enraged deity nodded, and dropped him to the floor. He tried to attack but I told him he's not able to stand. In fact, he's not able to move. Or form coherent thoughts. This diety had drained his intelligence to match his actions. Down to three int. specifically. He was no longer sapient. Most cows had a higher intelligence. Naturally, he got mad and stormed out but the rest of us had a pretty good laugh

I'm not necessarily "That Player" but I've definitely gotten to a place where the DM and the Party have gotten a little *peeved* at me. My DM is American and I'm Australian we play online on roll20 and discord. My DM tracked down my Mum and copied her saying the phrase "[name redacted] sit down and shut up." It's only been used once definitely took me by surprise and it was very effective.

If my American DM tracked down my Australian Mum I'd be hugely weirded out. Personally, as an Australian in the same Online DnD situation, my greatest fear is accidentally running the campaign overtime because midday for me is midnight for almost everyone else. I'd hate to be "that player" who tries to get into the nitty-gritty details and argue useless points when all the rest of the party wants to do is go to bed before 2am.

@@conspiracypanda1200 If time runs short and you've got unresolved issues and questions, check with the DM about a day/time you can meet to talk it out and get "on the right page"... Then you can devote a little time writing up a list of details and questions, to make that meeting productive... It can really help when schedules are tight, and sessions have to be limited... Sometimes it's just better to have an "out of session" chat with a DM and get the permissions settled about flavoring a character, or being SURE of certain powers or items looted and gained in the game that haven't been fully explained... LOTS of ways it can be useful, and usually, you can fit such lists on a single sheet of paper with little or no difficulty... THEN in the next session, you're prepared, and there is no risk of keeping folks up or out past their deadlines and bedtimes... ;o)

I do have a “that DM” story to relate from a friend, back from when D&D 3.5 was the latest thing. (Story from a long time ago, originally told by a friend I haven’t seen in over a decade, so expect paraphrasing.) This is at the very start of the campaign, rolling the characters stats. While my friend and two of the other players are considering what to do with their characters, the last player asks the DM, “Any chance I could get a reroll on my character?” The DM replies with, “No, whatever you roll is what you get.” “Normally I’d be fine with that, but you might want to make an exception for this,” the player says, and shows the DM his rolls. The DM looks at the numbers and shrugs. “Sucks to be you.” The player lays the sheet down in the middle of the table and starts gathering up all of his gaming stuff. “I’m out, y’all. Hopefully I’ll get to play with you with a less unreasonable DM sometime.” And he’s out the door. There’s kind of a stunned silence for a few moments, everyone just staring at the door closing behind him, and then my friend reaches over and picks up the character sheet he’d left behind: “Dude, his highest roll was a NINE!” Again, the DM shrugs. “Yeah, and?” My friend stands up, shoves his dice into his pocket and crumples up his character sheet. “Screw this.” And then he heads for the door. One of the other guys stands up, picking up all of his stuff. “If he’s out, I’m out. He’s my ride here.” The last thing my friend heard from that aborted session before the door closed was the last player saying, “Oh, hell no, I am NOT soloing this!” From what my friend said a few years after that debacle, the DM still thought he was in the right and the players were all being unreasonable.

After a quick look online, the 3.5 PHB actually agrees with the player. Its written in the character creation section under rolling ability scores; If your total mod is 0 or less or your highest score is 13 or less, you can reroll your ability scores. Just a quick rules lawyering many years after the fact.

I was actually the DM in this scenario. I had a player who was taking all the spotlight, actively opposing rules decisions I made, and the point of this story: she would constantly get on me for things being racist. The worst example of this was when I had the party face a few gnolls but only had goblin minis. As SOON as they go out on the map she's immediately yelling at me about how goblins are jewish stereotypes and I'm racist for using them. (We have 2 jewish people in our party, both of whom said they were fine with it. She is not Jewish). Between sessions we discovered she was all but writing smut of the other characters. That was the last straw and I started scheming. The character she was playing was a Teifling. A Teifling who had been underground in stasis for almost 100 years over the creation of a heavily fanatical theocracy. A theocracy where Teiflings aren't treated much better than a common gnoll or bullywug. The next session she was gone from the campaign and I described as she was essentially lynched for supposed conspiracy with the lords of the abyss. Her character popped up once in the rest of the campaign, as a mounted head and corpse on the table in the feasting hall of Bael. The party unanimously stopped arguing and fighting with Bael and shared parts of her. The story doesn't end there though. Before I had an open player slot, she was helping write the campaign and I had forgotten to unshare the google doc with her. She blatantly rewrote the last 3rd of the campaign and then stole all my paper campaign notes as well as every character sheet. I was fortunately able to get them back but still, moral of the story is don't be an asshole or I WILL take the karma in the world that I preside over and I WILL shove it back in your face. I have a quite annoying player and the dm let’s the player get away with a lot of things but there is a rule where players can’t hurt each other unless both players agree and the amount of times this player tries to fight me and gets shut down (but one time I ended up killing him with thunderclap which bypasses that rule)

Not DND. This was a free-form roleplay setting, without dice or DM's, so all outcomes were by agreement. It was hosted in an online chat, so you couldn't uninvite people unless the moderation wanted to go as far as a ban, which required a violation of the rules. (These were all grounded in gameplay, no moral judgements in the rules outside of things like out-of-character racism, insults, harassment, etc.) We had one character join our group who was one of the 'age is just a number' types, and would flirt with characters who were underage, and sometimes played by players who were (probably) underage. (Hard to tell on the internet.) They were the type who would always reveal a new ability they'd been 'hiding' whenever they found themselves in a tight spot - they were magic, psionic, they could teleport, fly, all sorts of shit. In the free-form setting, there was no mandate to limit or balance yourself, though it was strongly encouraged, and everybody knew who wanted an adventure and who was just on a power fantasy. Me and one other character got fed up with them, and hatched a plan. We needed a setting that would negate their every escape route. We knew of their teleportation, wings, and predicted they might suddenly get super-speed. That meant we had to isolate their supernatural powers, attack them indoors and keep them there, slow them down before the fight, and fight them in constrained quarters to limit their mobility. I played a character who's only real skill outside of moderate competence with a sword was the ability to cancel out any supernatural ability - he could do this three times a day, but our target and their player didn't know about this limit. Another character, a female player who was very combat-centric and one of our popular players, offered to play the bait. We didn't think they could resist getting attention from a well-known character in the setting, and it seems we were right. We logged our private discussion about all the preparation we would make, so that if we were challenged as having invented all of this in the moment (we called it godmoding, where you just invent whatever you need so nothing can ever hurt you, or nobody can fight against you, and this was a rules violation) we would have a record that we had planned and prepared every countermeasure ahead of time. The player got lured into the bait character's home. She made a point to post that she locked the door, being cute about it to avoid suspicion. Our target got poisoned by the tea (I researched real-life options that could cause weakness in minutes), and after chatting for a few minutes (the amount of time it typically took effect in real minutes) her posts disclosed the poison, and her character immediately went into combat with the goal of murder. They tried to teleport magically, and my character revealed themselves to cancel it. Then he cancelled their psychic attempt to rip the door down. My character said "I can keep this up as long as I need to," blatantly lying about their ability. Luckily, they bought it. They tried the door, having dismissed the lock as a cute gesture, and forgetting what it meant. They tried to do a superhero flying smash through the window, but we had a logged discussion that we would bar the window, because of course they'd want to escape to find someone to potion them up or cast something on them. We never did finish the murder, but we did get a ragequit, which we counted as a successful assassination, and was pretty much our entire goal anyway. The moderators DID contact us to discuss godmoding and how we conducted our assassination attempt; but every measure we took to shut down their survival was part of countermeasures to their predicted responses, and we had discussed them before we began. We did get sternly warned about forcing other people's experience to follow our scripts, but I think they were as pleased to be rid of them as everybody else was. TL;DR -- we set out to assassinate a player whose character was creeping on underage characters. We prepared many countermeasures for their predicted responses, and they fulfilled our every prediction.

I have only dmed twice so far and this happened the second time and due to this happening with people from the Mr rip discord some details are changed. So about a year ago I dicided to try running a game online and got 3 players to play, the seasion was meant to be short in both time and that it was a one shot. I set the scene and was using screen shair for the maps, player 1 was fine, player 2 was the problem and player 3 was late and opted to just listen. P1 asked questions and was fully engaging while p2 seamed to be a 16 year old who loved cursing and not paying attention to the setting. As this was my second time running a game I thought nothing much of it and continued dispute my unease about p2, but it didn't get better, he would use brute force before trying to think about anything, an example is that he ran straight into the boss Room without looking around to notice the basilsks victoms and got turned partly to stone. At this point he started wineing about it not being fair and giving out when he got hit for 10 damage and had a lasting injury of stone leg. The charictor was lv5 and I had only been hit once and didn't take damage in any other point in the game. I got tired of his wineing so once P1 made an attack I declined the beast dead and ended the game. I'm also 99% sure he was metagaming and cheating.

Not the DM but, my brother and I joined an adventurers league game of curse of strahd. My brother and I played our backgrounds off of each other as soldiers who fought together. Our main thing was that we were the only surviving members of a platoon that was attacked by a dragon and horde of kobolds. That guy was horrible at meta gaming and was playing a kobold character. Upon introduction of his character there was an immediate hatred from my character and my brothers towards his. Nothing out of game, and since player characters can’t kill others in adventurer’s league we played it off as my character restraining and tying up his kobold, all due to the first interaction being him sprinting directly up to my character. The meta gameing became an issue when we entered a house and he went straight to a hidden room that no one could have possibly known was there, he was constantly reading ahead and knew all of the secrets. The minor solution to this was my character, still very much hating him, locked him in said secret room where he proceeded to try and break out. Since there was only one door and my character was a strength based warrior and he a dex based barbarian it was easy to keep him there the whole game while the rest of the party had fun exploring the house and solving the puzzles.

Arr party shut down the DM. We was playing a random encounter night we fought wrights, lizard folk and spiders we got to the last one to find out who the boss was it was a griffin level 8 and we are all level three of course the Griffin had first initiative or cleric went next and cast a spell of blindness on the Griffin and it was supposed to take 20 minutes to take the Griffin out we did it in three rounds I kept on rolling not 20s with Max damage with my rogue which is a dragonborn use my dragon breath and I used my crossbow with assassin and sneak attack and took him out. The DM didn't know what to do took his glasses off rubbed his head and said that he was dead

"That player" wasn't long for the D&D life. For some context out of game and in game, he used to be a friend of mine (Heavy on "used") and another friend of mine knew I was between campaigns and asked if I wanted to try an all evil campaign as soon as he found more players. I told him sure and I know some people that want to try playing. He was cool with that and we got it all together. As we used to be friends, we decided to spin our backstories together. Our characters were great friends, both survivors of good trying to do us in that helped each other. Now in-game, all of our players wake up to find we're dead and in hell. And he immediately starts just running at danger. That's all fine and good, he's new and exploring. It's just that he keeps putting the party in danger too. Then with the party, the problems starts. It's our first session, and he immediately starts a fight with all the players. It puts us to a grinding halt as he will not stop even when we ask him out of character to please stop. From what I vaguely remember, his reason for fighting was insignificant but here we were. Only two rooms away from the first room, fighting. When we finally move again, him still makes comments as we go, he starts treating my character like nothing but a pack mule and a bodyguard for him. If he fails to get something (he had weak ass strength and couldn't pick up a lot of the heavier things) he would demand my character do it for him because "our characters are friends". I told him repeatedly no, my character is trying to be cautious, she's not going to pick up everything she sees like you are. Finally, finally! We make it out to basically meet who would be our npc boss for the game, and...bless his soul. He asks the dm if he could fight him. My dm, I love him, had been so patient, so trying because this guy was a new player. At this point, he'd given up. When the player tried to attack, my dm has the npc pin him with a ice sword and goes "if you get up, and try to do that again, he will kill you and I will not let you make a new character." Immediately, the guy looks to my character for help but I stayed silent. I was done with him that day. I'd like to say he learned his lessons, he did not and after a sexist comment to one of the other females in the group, my dm promptly kicked him and told me to block him and if I had issues with that guy again, find him and he'd deal with the issue. I had no issues doing as he asked. Screw that. TL;DR : we tried to be patient and explain things to a new player that wanted to fight everything (including us) and he was promptly booted when he took it all too far.

Current Campaign. I'm the DM. At the beginning, I had a "Main Character Syndrome" player. I'm running Curse of Strahd with the Death House module. My party was CONSTANTLY private messaging me asking me to do something about this player. I just calmly told them I had a plan. [SPOILER ALERT] My plan had been for the sacrifice in the dungeon of the death house to be the player, however, the player decided to spam me with random things on discord laughing at 3 am until I had enough and just booted them from everything. Would have been nice to allow the party to handle the player themselves... they were all on board with it.

a being of incalculable power in our homebrew, like the primordial gods where created from its body offered each of us a wish, i wished for orc-kind to regain the potential to become akin to the advanced civilization it had been before the "great fall" (apocalypse) 4000 years ago, another party member wished the return of the pc who had become an avatar of Hadar, one wished for the return of an artifact, and that player wished to return tiamat to her sealed living tomb/lair, but to transfer her entire hoard to his dwarven vault jokes on him, in this world, Tiamat is one of the primordial gods, but not of the same origin, she came about, formed from the astral sea as a bestial manifestation of sentient avarice and dreams and despite his best efforts at obtaining the one item that could protect him from her entering his dreams, he never got it, maybe if he asked nicely and didn't try to steel from the lawful neutral dragon npc and then gaes and successfully rob my character of all his magic equipment (including a few one of a kind if minor items), once it wore off the rest of the party caught him after i told them and we got my stuff back at the end of the session he managed to escape (and all of this is justified because hes been having some messed up dreams and he's got a greed curse already) so the dm turns to him and asks him to turn over his character sheet, he's now an NPC we'd hear about his shenanigans from time to time, we started a thieves guild to replace one that had been fully infiltrated with a disease cult (tunnel rats became plague rats, we replaced them with our black masks) but after we started to take a step back from leadership as we already had stuff to do, that character ended up taking over the new guild, made his second in command a construct only he could control so he'd never get betrayed and he could have a guardian with him too almost all the time. thats what got him in the end, he eventually trusted the construct, and someone managed to replace it and assassinated him, the real construct arrived too late but was still able to kill the assassin and so the silver lady continues to run the guild as it was run when he was alive, steadfast in her duties there had been a lot of "its what my character would do" up until he lost control of him, but i think him being cooler as an NPC and having a death, maybe not cooler, but at least more of note served as a sobering lesson about going against the party just because you've decided thats the characterization, because lets be honest, you have to choose for them to be that way, and if it doesn't work with the party vibe, then its a poor choice

I had a rouge who would steal anything from anyone. His attempts to steal always took lots of time and got the party off track. I baited him by saying there was an old blind lady, (a hag, that was covered in copper coins and copper jewelry. They had seen and heard several stories around town about her. When the party finally ran into her at the town pub. The rouge did an investigation and said “what seems to be the most valuable thing the old lady owns.” I asked him to make an investigation and an arcana check. He only passed the investigation. I told him “. At the side of the old lady is a small dagger made entirely of copper, the words turn all there is to riches is engraved on it and you can feel some magical power coming off of it. “ The rouge stole and and the next morning found that he was cursed every metal thing he touched turned to copper the dagger was cursed. He began to age. Slowly as the day went on. He went back to the old lady. She was hard to find as she. had become young and beautiful again, she informed him the only way to get the curse lifted was to have someone steal the dagger away from you, stealing the dagger would also steal the curse. By this time with the rouges gold and weapons all turned to copper, during the first encounter I ruled that any weapon made of copper would break if it rolled the max damage on a damage dice. He kept this curse for 2 sessions before managing to fool another rouge into stealing from him. At one point He did use the curse to turn an enemies armor from steel to copper which drastically lowered the AC of the bad guy.

I was 'that guy.' It was one of the first sessions of dnd I've ever played, and our party had split. So it was my dwarf warlock, a human rogue(?) and a kobold. Our group had to go get the help of an island populated fully by assassins against an invading force, or something of the sort. (It's been a few years.) The leader of the island was an elven man who was, in my opinion, being very rude, though that might have been clouded by my knowledge that elves and dwarfs don't normally get along. Anywho, it came to a head when my dwarf finally spoke up and called the elven assassin out on his rudeness. He responded with "Oh please, don't oversell yourself. My men train from a young age to be the best they can be. Why, I bet even my daughter could defeat you.' My dwarf, stubborn as they are, decided to take him up on that bet. Needless to say, dwarf lost with just 10 hp left, with the only time he caused any damage being an AOE effect of a fireball. I still play with that group, but the campaign fizzled out soon after that incident, so now I'm an earth genasi barbarian. But yeah, since that trounching by a 7 year old, my dwarf is now known across the land, a testament to his stupidity and stubbornness.

I have not had any good experiences playing with kids, and in some cases teenagers. They often want to "one-up" their previous ridiculous and roleplay breaking stunts. Not sure if its a call for attention, or a total lack of caring about other peoples' experiences due to their upbringing, or a lack of brain development... but they tend to be all about their experience and not care about the group as a whole. We are there for their fun.

At first I really did not get why people would be "that player" or "that DM" But after playing I found out its surprisingly difficult if you are really invested in the game and your character to not become that person yourself. Its normal to like your character and lose yourself if something goes wrong or not the way it was planned. Even if you don't want to do it, sometimes it happens subconsciously and you don't notice you were being a bit of a douche/inflexible until much later. DnD really helped me learn that I REALLY can't stand handing control over to somebody else. That and the vague rules of DnD as a whole, thinking the rules/abilities work in a certain way only to end up debating 15 minutes about the fine print and wording until we reach a compromise. I really wish they were worded and written in much deeper detail.

This is why you can have great friends you just don't get along with in D&D... AND it's how D&D is a COLLABORATIVE effort to build stories... With the right group together, people you CAN trust to hand over some control, it becomes the greatest hobby ever... AND it always takes WORK... The rules are vague so they can be flexible, subject to GM's fiat as appropriate, and it's really the GM you need to be able to trust most of any of the Players... I've generally worked to get Tables to rotate the GM "position", so everyone gets a turn at running the Game, and nobody's "stuck" as the "Lifetime GM"... Be it a big adventure, a series of episodic adventures with an arc to them, or little misadventuring fillers between other adventures and arcs when everyone's either creatively bankrupt or just not quite finished polishing what they have for us to dive in yet... Even relative noob's get encouraged to sit behind the screen and throw together some improv' play for some issue or other to resolve... It's generally cool, because everyone gets a taste of how it is "corralling cats" with a party of chaotic PC's that do exactly what you didn't want or expect... AND there's a growth of forgiveness for the "Acting GM" almost no matter how ill prepared or insecure he or she is... There are adjustments (of course) and the Campaigns frequently get tangled up nearly hopeless, as two or three at a Table of 6 will have solid Campaigns and experience, 1 at least will have almost no clue what to even do, and 2 more will be fountains of little adventures that aren't complex or particularly challenging, BUT the filler helps break out the RP and comedy (especially), and lends us time to flesh out and explore our PC creations... The one that has no clue, usually, eventually starts figuring things out and in one or two (ahem) "well coached" adventures, really starts to blossom if they stick it out and try... The 2 or 3 who build elaborate arcs have little or no trouble knitting their works together collaboratively, taking turns as we bounce from one arc to the others and back... The little details and "flubs" or "goofs" are easier to smooth out so the Players don't notice when you've intertwined two separate campaign arcs... AND with 3 nobody's got brains enough to even notice other than the GM who wrote it up, and the adventures can get refined really well over time... with active "test play" before being unleashed on other Tables where there might only be one GM... In any case, you just about can't ask for a better understanding of the rules than you get by GM'ing through an adventure, even (or I should say "especially") with help. A good seasoned Player/GM will offer references like page numbers or charts for making the Game work, and where rules or detailed sections are located... AND many times we can be trusted to help keep track of things like "Attack Order" and "Initiative" or whatever so you're not overwhelmed the first time out the gate... AND no GM's get "burnt out". BUT as with about any collaborative creative activity, it's got to start with good people, and then it takes work to get them to work together instead of degenerate everything to chaos and arguing... ;o)

Edward and Bella: My DM has a side room where smut was more tolerable, and we keep the main RP session M for Mature (instead of AO). My character is (at the time of this post) currently undergoing clothing damage thanks to having an unwell mind and a lack of opportunity to fix her clothes or get new ones, but they still haven't completely broken down to the point she's naked (even though, as a Monk, this won't get in the way of her AC at all). Still, this was a nice little solution to the two lovebirds. Alcaine-Sho: My condolences to this rookie Rogue for having to put up with the idiot paladin and half-baked cleric. Congrats for winning the fight by his lonesome after the paladin's fuckup. Baby Killer: Again, condolences to the rookie for putting up with that shit. I feel bad for bringing this up but we currently have a “That Player” in my group…though he’s not doing it in game. This guy has been berating and emotionally abusing a friend of mine for who knows how long, and last week he brought it to my attention by telling me through DMs (we play on Discord). It would usually be a simple solution of kicking him and being done with it, but my friend considers this guy to be his best friend and wants to see him change. He hasn’t shown any of this behavior in the server, so there isn’t anything that I can do if my friend doesn’t speak up first, which means that unless he breaks free from this guy he’s going to keep being hurt. What makes things worse is I was the one who invited him to the server, he was brought in on my recommendation after I talked about D&D in an art server he was in, so even though him being the way he is isn’t my fault…bringing him to the server is. I want to speak up, but I don’t want to make things worse and cause my closest friend any more pain than the jerk already has, and yet i can’t just sit by and do nothing. I shouldn’t even be bringing this up, but i can’t talk about this anywhere else

That first story is sketchy to me. Did the monk deliberately try to set the farmer on fire? It didn't seem like he did. Was there not a bail of hail a safe distance from the barn to light up? I don't know, this seems like the DM was taking advantage of ambiguity, especially with the kids being trapped in the loft. Seriously, what? The GM seems more like the That Guy in this situation. Sorry, I don't really think trying to steal a horse and knocking a guy out instead of killing him is the worst thing in the world, nor railroading the character into being executed. In this case, it wasn't a DM handling it but a player (me), we had a group of players that was half adults and half teenagers. One of the teens got fixated on saying fist instead of punching. He was playing a monk. This is the group that has my horny bard (who would be THAT character but all hanky panky is handled by saying "You have a fun time" by mutual decision of me and the DM). The monk player was constantly saying I fist them. The other teens were asking him to stop. He's a way of mercy monk and my bard went down. He said, "I fist the bard to heal him." My bard replied on waking up "Half-Orcs do it better." He stopped saying fist.

During a game amonst friends our human drunken monk once declared to attempt to fist a hostile succubus into submission, as funny as it was, our DM at least kept it short and sweet; he did roll some dice well, so the succubus became enamoured with him and by extension the party, at the very least. It was very odd, but not at all out of character for the guy. He had used threats of rape as an intimidation tactic; constantly assaulted shopkeepers, practiced necrophilia, freed a bunch of slaves but forced them to worship him, and tried to drink anything and everything under the sun, up to and including from a runewell. Some people accidentally bring a bit of chaos to the table, and others decide to bring it all on purpose.

In my case, I routinely bring chaos but more chaotic good. Most of my Bard's stuff was handled with notes passed back and forth with the DM. I likened it to me playing a completely different game while being tangentially involved with the main game. I'm not even sure the Council in Tyranny of Dragons even knew who my character was for a long time because he did his own thing in town. It helped that he was a demigod with high Con and a lot of HP. He was a complicated character. There's no telling how many kids he has if we ever revisit that game.

That Rogue who didn't care if the Paladin lived or died was 100% justified. The Paladin threw all caution to the win while on the brink of death all allies retreating. As soon as the party realized they weren't doing enough damage to survive the combat encounter, they should have fled, and nobody is at fault for someone else dying if they decide to stick around and get themselves killed in battle beyond that point. Back in college we had a D&D club that would frequently run one shots to teach new people how to play and to provide games for people who just wanna hang around and have fun (I would later be the treasurer of this club, but that's a different story). This is a story about one such one shot, where we had a relatively new player, or at least one I'd never seen before, at the table. It was a simple mission: kill a group of goblins terrorizing a village. I enjoy the planeshift stuff that crosses over with Magic the Gathering, because I play that a lot, so I talked with the DM and she let me play a Naga from Planeshift Amonkhet, and I was a Neutral Evil Sorcerer. The new player was playing a Lawful Good Human Paladin, and I can't rightly remember what everyone else was playing, but it's not important to the story. I can't remember what he was doing, but the Paladin got separated from the party for a bit while we went to handle the goblins, and during that time my Sorcerer ended up crushing the tribe leader's skull in his fangs and declared himself the new leader of the tribe, which is when we found out about a second tribe on the other side of the village. That's when he had the idea to sick them on each other and then finish off the rest once one side was wiped out, so he started putting that in motion. He didn't want to do all this effort without getting paid though, so he went to the village with the corpse of the chief goblin to prove that the tribe was "wiped out," then bargain for extra gold when we kill the other tribe. This is when the Paladin regrouped and saw my character, covered in blood at 2HP, dragging the corpse of one of the goblins he knew was terrorizing this village. That was when he did what any reasonable Paladin would do and tried to kill me immediately, because I had a corpse, so I was obviously evil (which was half true, but not to that degree). Now the DM has no tolerance for bullshit, so she has the town guard attack and kill him and tells him he can bring a new character in if he wants to keep playing. The "new character" he decides to bring in however is literally the exact same character, but his "younger brother," and he walks up after the guards left. My character was still standing somewhat near the corpse of his last character, and he immediately says "That person killed my brother, I have to avenge him!" and he immediately tries to kill me. Again. This is when the DM god smites happen, where his character literally gets smited down by his god, and he then has to explain himself to them. Not only does he try rolling deception checks against his own deity, but he then tries to pledge loyalty to any deity who would get him out of this situation, which goes just about as well as you could expect, and he didn't play for the rest of the session

A "That Player" refers to someone who: 1) Attempts to cheat or bend the rules of the game for their own benefit, 2) Tries to be the main character in a _team_ game, pushing other players to the side so that only they can feel cool and important, 3) Acts rudely towards the other players or the person running the game, and/or: 4) Ignores the game's story and/or team's agreed upon goals in favor of trying to commit needless violent or or sexual acts even when the other players tell them to stop because it's annoying/uncomfortable Basically: if you're trying to have fun, "That Player" will do everything in their selfish power to ruin it for you.

That "wink, wink, nudge, nudge, sparkly eyes" thing combined with the occasional baby voice when talking about problem players and a slew of other things was super distracting and annoying. Ripper has good stories and he's kind of funny, but he tries to make himself the center of attention too often. Also, that actualization thing he does at the end takes up way too much time.
