The class in 2e is a thief which is part of the rogue group with bards. Just like fighters are part of the warrior group with paladins and rangers. Wizard group has mages and specialist wizards. Priest group has clerics, druids, and specialty priests

Thieves used to be able to use any weapon in BX which could include a two handed sword. It still took several sessions to get to 1st or 2nd level as a lot of monsters didn’t have huge amounts of treasures.

I actually give the rogue a set number of skill points to assign with bonus points for high dexterity.

Not 4 Classes, 4 Groups. Rogue is a group that includes Thief and Bard classes.
