IDK .... Personally I played book one and modified the story where the mechanoids invaded but the mother ship never showed up ... the colonists discovered another ancient civilization that was deep underground and there was hidden technology the colonists could use. The odds were still against the colonists but they had a fighting chance . I did not care for the 2nd and 3rd book all that much but I used some of the stuff in there as source material. I give book 1 at least a 4 out of 5 .... there was some pretty cool , I guess I would call "Supplements" that Paladium printed through the Detroit Gaming Center. These supplements were free, printed on newsprint ... but they introduced new monsters like "Moss Men" and also these crab things like a "Sand devil" or something like that ... and I recall there being some content on the "Rovers" and their culture ... it was cool .......

I've been a big fan of shadowrun since the late 90s and 3e was the first RPG book I bought when I was a teenager. I'd known about earthdawn for a long time but hadn't really looked into it until recently and after watching all your videos about it, damn this sounds awesome.

Good news! Later this year we're going to do a deep dive into both Earthdawn (1E) and Shadowrun (1E). I hope you come back then. 😁

Anyone who thinks Palladium's skill system is too hard is probably not mentally equipped to play high level RPG campaigns. I appreciate when people identify this way so I can not interact with them as fast as possible.

Excellent point made about a DM flipping back and forth between an NPC and DM mode. That's some of what solo roleplaying is like.

When I solo I usually roll up a whole party and roleplay each character out as they would probably act or react. I use adventures from old Dungeon magazines or D&D modules.

Finally, I managed to watch the whole discussion. I use simple tokens only when there are many combatants and/or they are split into groups, and solely to convey the general idea of their positioning. My players try to move them as they would with battle minis, and I have to slap their hands.

The game system is ok, minus RIFTS. The Fantasy game is great all in all. Though 14 foot trolls and 12 foot Ogres is stupid. The Wolfen is a race constantly pushed by the game. They're annoying. They are larger than humans, more powerful, oh yeah with night sight to for some reason. 🫤 All races have night sight but Humans and Changlings. 🙄 No explanation on why Wolfen have night sight, or Ogres and Trolls. Or even Elves for that matter. The World of Palladium is pretty sub-standard. It lacks development. The gaming supplements don't in anyway compare to the typical old school AD&D module. The only exceptions are Island at the End of the World and Adventures in the Northern Wilderness.

The goal (of solo rp) for me is to have cool scenes play out in the imagination. The dice are a TOOL for this end. If usually take the dice input and work with that. Because it is delightful to do so, full of surprises, suspense and creative challenges. But remember, if anything can happen in the imagination, you can always ask "what if that didn't happen". It is simply the nature of the beast. I suppose people who solo rp to , what have you, do BECMI correctly, or have a strict, historically accurate and RAW simulationist experience, would approach dice input differently and even talk about "fudging". Who cares really. It's what you want to get out of it. No need for absolutism here.

It's kind of funny/cringe listening to you all talking about solo gaming. The rabbit hole is deep when it comes to the many styles of play. It has been around in one form or another since the early days of the hobby. The real innovation to the solo scene (the r/Solo_Roleplaying community has 47k members) was the introduction of dedicated solo games and the use of various oracles out there that allow you to take any RPG and run it solo. This allowed me to get many games to the table that I never could find a group for. And well, the pandemic was a great motivator for people to discover solo play. One thing to keep in mind is that as long as you are having fun, you are winning. Enjoy making maps and painting minis as part of prep? You're winning. Like making custom encounter tables, would building, and writing up factions/agendas? Winning. Love interpreting random words/images/cards and applying them to the current scene? Super winning. When you combine all the games, tools, play styles, and technology out there, there are millions of ways to play solo. And, they're all good if you find fun in that. 🙂
