This is Wilderness 101: extreme heat and cold, foraging, tracking, and using plants to detail your setting! Each of these environments and topics will be getting their own in-depth video in the future :)

Hey boB! My players are moving through a jungle in a semi simple hex-crawl and I bumped into this video, but have not spotted these herb and plant videos you mentioned at the end of this one? Are they as a section in another video or have you postponed your plans on the video subject?

I like this a lot. What an incredible supplement! Sometimes I feel like certain spells really get in the way of proper exploration (Like Conjure Water in the Desert), but overall - The Bushcraft Guide makes it challenging even with these taken into account. I'm really looking forward to the rest of the series.

Thank you! I totally agree about Conjure Water, etc. I don’t have a video about this idea yet, but in my games, that water has to be conjured from somewhere. A normal casting probably wouldn’t produce much, but using higher level slots could draw water to the caster from a different environment, or maybe even from another creature!

Bob, my guy, my man, I know this is an older video but I loved it so much and its definitely helped me with prepping my current witcher-style campaign! I don't think you ended up making any of the other biome specific videos but I am still so keen to see them. Do you have any plans to revisit some of this stuff? I love how passionate you are about the environment and how that comes through in your world building

How does this work out in actual play? If the party takes a game day to cross a desert tile, would you make each member roll 8 saving throws in a row? Or do something different?
@BobWorldBuilder
@BobWorldBuilder 4 жыл бұрын
Right, practicality matters. The DMG brings up extreme cold and heat after discussing "hour-by-hour" play, in which case you would describe and roleplay the difficulty of travel in hour increments over the course of a day. In my opinion, this level of detail for travel is reasonable for 1-5 days, but it will absolutely drive home the idea the crossing a desert/tundra is HARD. When I make a desert video in the future, I will break down different ways to use these mechanics to make sure they're still fun for everyone :)

I think you could get lost in a desert for 2 reasons: 1: everything looks alike/no landmarks and 2: no atmospherics to judge distances, so that "little grove of trees" you think is not that far away is actually a forest MILES and MILES away.

My campaigns are usually very unforgiving in terms of natural survival, it really pushes people to consider their choices much more. Once, one of my players fell into an iced over river (bad choice on their part lol) and ended up with exhaustion 4 and a disorientation with 25 dmg in total (at lvl 3). And, in one occasion, someone rested on a mountain (-35°c) without shelter and died to exposure. Also, dwarf got snowed in somehow. I like how the enemies are not your biggest issue most of the time as you can easily get pulled apart by mother natures uncaring force.

And this is where the value of bringing a little realism adds to a "fantasy world". Because just from something like this you can now easily carve up your world, understanding just where each race should or should not settle. Easily determine any threats or benefits from local flora and fauna they might encounter, how that would shape their culture and the kind of allies or enemies they might make with bordering settlements. And then there are quest lines only found in specific regions for something as basic as water that in a desert might be more valuable than gold at times. And if you want to go a little environmentalist, according to the PHB magic is literally in everything. Even a pebble or drop of water. So what happens to a world suffused with magic on a molecular level when too much deforestation or excessive mining occurs? Does instability occur? A magic equivalent of global warming such as wild magic storms? Does the world fight back if it loses too much? Are monsters a form of antibody to fight off the infection known as civilization? 🤔
@BobWorldBuilder
@BobWorldBuilder 4 жыл бұрын
I might have to quote the later half of your comment in a future video! Really well said. And yes, I love using Earth science as a model for fantasy worlds because it makes them both more fantastic and grounded at the same time! Making this video was a ton of fun -- I feel like I'm finally getting into the "world building" stuff I wanted to build this channel around haha xD
@karpmageddon4155
@karpmageddon4155 4 жыл бұрын
@@BobWorldBuilder You really can go wild with adding realism to a fantasy world. Take the ozone layer, what if in a fantasy world it acts as a barrier to interdimensional dangers. As it grows weaker, the elemental planes bleed more into the material. And boom you have magic global warming as continents crack open, coastal cities get crushed by invading krakens and volcanoes explode in a shower of fire elementals that slowly consume the landscape. I mean if you wanted, you could totally go Pacific Rim or Godzilla with it. Because fantasy mecha should be more of a thing! 😅

Grace’s homebrew setting actually uses a similar principle where a god literally shields the material plane between the sun and the stars, but every once in a while things slip through!

Not sure if you cover this in a different video, but if you wanted to make a survival campaign what would you do about spells like goodberry, mold earth, create and destroy water, locate animals and plants, etc. ? Those spells make finding food, shelter, and water trivial. I'm not sure if I should remove them, significantly alter them, or what.
@DemonMankeyMan
@DemonMankeyMan 4 жыл бұрын
So would you transpose things like heat tolerance if your party were to be travelling the plane of fire as an example? Alternately, if you wanted could you confine most civilisation to these less hospitable environs because of the sheer danger of large predators in more temperate areas making it unfeasible to establish a settlement. That gives me some ideas...
@BobWorldBuilder
@BobWorldBuilder 4 жыл бұрын
Yes! Heat tolerance totally makes more sense to me for the plane of fire than the normal extreme heat rules! Honestly I like the idea of running them BOTH, but seems like a lot of dice rolling, so I will be revisiting these heat ideas in a desert-specific video down the line! And you're definitely right about flipping the script with these environments. You could take it further and say humanoids only inhabit the Underdark because the ENTIRE surface is too dangerous!!
@DemonMankeyMan
@DemonMankeyMan 4 жыл бұрын
@@BobWorldBuilder Given how dangerous the Underdark can be you would need to really amp up the threat of the surface world. Also give some serious thought to how races without darkvision would survive in the inky depths. Maybe the surface world is the designated battlefield between celestials and fiends? Or some disaster caused the beasts of the world to rapidly and dangerously mutate? Heck throw in a climate change post apocalypse for giggles. Would humanoids society alter to grant more power to spellcasters in political circles as 'Lightbringers' who ensure that crops can be grown that survived/were brought back. Would races without Darkvision become second class citizens who seek out a life on the surface because anything must be better? Humanity would certainly not be the vast majority in such a world.

The scary thing with either hypothermia or heatstroke is people become irrational and discard the very things they need to get better (warm clothing or water, etc.).

Do about DC 15 being "only" a moderate challenge. Assume a +7 modifier on the roll, which would be someone trained and adept at whatever that skill/attack is, then roll against a DC 15 and see how often you actually hit it. Go ahead, I'll wait. Done? I assume you stopped reading to test, but maybe you didn't. It's not so easy, is it? Yeah, the odds are favorable for hitting DC 15 with +7 to hit, meaning you hit on a roll of 8. However, there's still A LOT of room to miss, as well, and you do so reliably. DC 15 may "only" be a moderate challenge, but it is not to be dismissed as "unchallenging".
