My Grandfather(s) were there . Grandpa Williams lied about a lot of things to even get in to the Army right after Pearl. He said there were so many ships in the channel crossing it looked like you should be able to step from one ship to the next to the next and just walk up to the beaches. His previous lies about his age and his health had caught up to him while on the ship crossing to England staging area so they couldn't return him to the states so they changed his MOS from Infantry to Motor Pool / mechanics. He built pontoon bridges he retrieved broken shot up equipment, he actually got to drive Eisenhower a couple times when his regular driver was not available. he never talked willingly about WWII but I did get him to say how much he respected Eisenhower as a Man as well as a leader. Sometimes Lying to the Army will save your life If they hadn't found out he would have been in those first waves. I might not have a life and therefore my daughter might not be here either. The big picture has affected all of us no matter the Generation/Age. The Greatest generation did change the world. It's a shame what we've done to it since. "Those who fail to remember our history are destined to Repeat it." I hope that means we'll remember Why they stepped up.

I am the commander of my local Legion Post. Sadly we only have 1 WWII & 1 Korean War veterans left. Sadly since I became commander I have had the unpleasant, but honored position of rendering final honors to 28 post members of WWII & Korean War. These men were my hometown Hero's growing up. Two men died on the beaches from my little town. I grew up learning of D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, and the Pacific (Grandpa was in the first Seabee battalion formed) from these men. Now sadly gone. D-Day will always be a significant day.

Thank you Daniel. The survivor guilt for these heroes still hitting 80 years on, and why wouldn't it. Such a shocking and traumatic time for these young men. Thanks to each and every one. Lest we forget 😔

My Dad took part in D day and stayed with the Rhine Army until 1949. He never really talked about as he lost so many friends.

Thank you Dan. A beautiful respectful and honourable reaction to these wonderful veterans and the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. It's always so overwhelming to hear these astonishing and incredible old men and women recounting their experiences. The level of sacrifice is inconceivable and unrepayable and seeing them bowed down by survivors guilt just breaks my heart but it must be a hundred times more so for you💛. The World At War actually talks to lots of these men and women but when they were a lot younger and many more were still alive. Thankfully people were making sure they got these personal histories and memories down on tape. On the tempestuousness of the English Channel, it's saved our bacon before. It's one of the reasons we beat the Spanish Armada when Spain tried to invade in the 1500's. It's such a tiny strip of water but it's such an effective force when it comes to stopping large invasions.

Black Rifle Coffee Company put out a video for The 80th Anniversary as well. "BRCC Presents: D-Day by Land, Sea, and Air" Three Vets give their perspectives as well. It's definitely worth checking out. 🙂

My Mum's eldest cousin, Harry Miller, joined up as soon as he could at 17 and was involved in D-Day. He used to visit his Mum, Aunty Ethel, in the 1970s who lived "5 doors down" our street. I would go round to see them and often found a leather gloved hand sitting on the table, so I knew it was Uncle Harry. He was shot on the beach and then ran over by a tank (diagonally across his body) losing his arm and damaging his organs. His ceramic hand he used to ride his moped was very heavy, so he would remove it. Years later (early 90s), at a family funeral, we found out the teaching college I was attending in Wrexham was the former Army base where he recuperated. We had a good chat about the local pubs. He died years later from a brain haemorrhage that could have happened at any time, apparently. He was married to Maureen and surprisingly had 3 girls and at least 6 grandchildren. Respect Uncle Harry.

By the time the tv show ended, I had tears running down my face. You showed the ultimate respect for these heroes, dead or alive. On another note, you were in my thoughts last night when Maryland was getting slammed by tornadoes. I prayed that you and your family and friends would be ok. You're about the same age as some of my grandchildren and I just want everyone to be safe

Just thought I’d let you know that the World War II channel hosted by Indy Neidell and his time ghost crowd has a D day special. The first 24 hours in one hour increments. They also have blocks 4 six hour blocks. If you’ve got the time. But this was filmed in Normandy, in the studio, multiple hosts covering all aspects of operation overlord the first day.

Very touching 😢. At some point you may find it interesting to hear the other side of things on D day and the war. Personal accounts, not the nzi propganda. Maybe you could check out this little 10min video from Channel 4, "WWII enemies reunited in D-Day anniversary". (An allied and german veteran meet) . If you like to learn more at some point let me know , there are many sources. (i know you've got a very full plate as it is 😂, in a year is fine, no rush ) This was recorded 5 yrs ago btw . Beautifull , touching, and hopefull. 🤘❤️🇪🇺🇺🇲 Ps: History Underground has a really good one of 4 US veterans meeting an ex-SS officer 78 yrs later, but thats 33 min long.

Er yes, but most definitely NO! it comes from the west so there were weather stations coming from islands in the atlantic, to calculate to the best of their abilities the speed the weather was travelling, from Ireland there isn't as much notice to plan, they used further west than Ireland. Stagg, the officer who briefer eisenhower wasn't even a meteorologist he was a geologist. This is one little cog among other more important cogs.

These brave boys died to protect the UK borders. Now look at our beaches. Keir Starmer has no Engliah Pride.
