GULL PERCH FLYER

Күн бұрын

Some 80 years ago 66 US Naval Vessels and 6 Royal Navy escort ships departed from Salcombe Harbour in South Devon heading towards Normandy as part of the invasion force Neptune, this was the amphibious phase of Operation Overlord. Their task was to land the 4th Division V11 Corps US Army on Utah Beach on Normandy.
The US Amphibious Force had arrived in Salcombe some 7 months before in 1943 swelling the population of Salcombe by some 2,000 US Personnel.
Many hotels were requisitioned and hutted camps were built. The town became a hive of activity with preparations for the invasion of German Occupied Europe.
With thanks to Roger Barrett for reference to his excellent book 'A History of Salcombe and its Surroundings' Further information can be found at Salcombe Maritime Museum. salcombemuseum...

I really enjoy these documentaries about a part of the world I used to visit regularly on a bike with my wife on holiday. No idea it had such a significant military history.

Thanks Chris, very moving. My father in law was D+1 at Sword to the Danish border near Hamburg at VE Day. He was in RTR and lost seven tanks under him. Similar traumas I guess to your father…

Fascinating vid, thank you. I’ve got fond memories of visiting my stepdads ol cousin who skippered a scalloper out of Salcombe in the 70’s.

Thank you. My father’s generation. My Uncle was killed in Normandy before I was killed. 👍🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 A very different Salcombe to that of today. I enjoyed staying at Hope Cove in the late 90’s.

My mother worked on Radar during the war, but she never spoke about it as she was sworn to secrecy. Shame, as I would have been very interested to know.
