Viewers unfamiliar with the Salerno landings should note that the British beaches and troops mentioned in video were part of 5th American Army under the command of Clark. They landed in the Salerno area and were not part of Montgomery's 8th Army that landed much farther south, in Reggio Calabria. a week before the Salerno operation.The distance between the two points by road today is around 400Km. Both 5th American Army and British 8th Army had units from many nations.

Its a bit odd that for all the discussions of how hard amphibious assaults are - there seem to be remarkably few cases of one being repelled entirely, or called off mid-mission. The Diepe raid comes to mind as a failure, and while the Brits eventually gave up at Gallipoli - took quite a while for them to leave. The Battle of Crete was costly, but not a loss overall.
@aquila4460 Жыл бұрын
The thing is, amphibious assaults are so hard that those that succeed in getting on the ground are already far ahead and have solved many of the biggest challenges. Which are the ability to land troops on foreign shores, and to supply those troops. If you can do both of those things, you can usually hold on a long time, even if the landing fails. It's a bit like landing on the moon. It is going to be very rare to see rockets explode on the moon because rockets that explode usually don't get that far.
@Dreamfox-df6bg Жыл бұрын
They have an inherent advantage for the attacker. The attacker chooses where they are going to land. The defender has to spread out,covering all possibilities. And even during a landing the defender can only pull so many troops from other places in case the landing is a diversion. That's one of the reasons why the landing in Normany succeeded. The Allies were able to make the Germans belief that Normandy was just a diversion, that the real landing would be at Calais. And as long as you have enough men to send in and are willing to take the causalities, an amphibious landing will succeed.
@jordinagel1184 Жыл бұрын
It’s probably because they’re so risky that almost no one will attempt one if they don’t have a clear advantage. As a result, you mainly are left with two kinds of naval landings: those that succeeded, and those that were discarded.
@Wolfeson28 Жыл бұрын
@@jordinagel1184 Pretty much this. As we see repeatedly throughout Europe and the Pacific in WWII, neither side ever seriously considers a major amphibious landing unless they already have an overwhelming military advantage. The defenders are stuck with the choice of either making their stand near the beaches (thus facing the full might of the attackers' naval power) or waiting to counterattack until the attackers already have gotten most of their superior forces ashore. The Japanese in particular tried multiple variations on both those ideas, but could never overcome their massive disadvantage in military power in those battles. Of course, as with Salerno and most of those Pacific islands, the outnumbered defenders can inflict disproportionate casualties even in defeat.
@agilemind624110 ай бұрын
@@jordinagel1184 This but also, it means if one is attempted there is usually great need for it to succeed so the attacker is willing to throw every thing they can at it to make it a success, so reinforcements are usually quick to arrive, diversions & deceptions are very common in support.

The real problem with salerno was his geography. Just look at any picture of it on google or maps, and what you see is a city built like a triangle, one side on the sea, and the other 2 with mountains covering it. One correction, The US command doctrine didn't treat relief of command in WWII the same way as anyone would expect, it was not a demotion nor a matter of 'scapegoating' but a matter of having an inappropriate state of mind for the immediate combat or for simply being ill suited to combat under those conditions. Most would simply be assigned command of another unit somewhere else or work in the headquarters to accumulate any wisdom or intelligence which might make them more effective when they are returned to command.
