My grandparents lived on San Juan Island, so every summer we'd visit on vacation. My grandma was obsessed with The Pig War, so much so that she built a building and created a Pig War Museum. She had old mannequins and wax figures dressed up as the primary people. When we'd visit she have us dress up as some of the characters. We have a picture of my younger sister dressed up as the pig and my dad as Lyman. I always thought she was crazy. At the time I only knew the pig shooting parts of story. She never went into the insane amount of politics that surrounded the incident. Thanks for helping me revisit my childhood.

I suspect the fence part may have been an oversimplification (who would have thought) or an outright fabrication, because I have looked at various retellings of the story and I didn’t find a single reference to a three sided fence, besides this video. One source says that the pig pushed its way through the fence, which if you’ve ever seen a massive hungry pig doesn’t sound too far fetched.
