As a Canadian, the fact that private individuals and organizations have to do this saddens (and angers) me to no end. In Canada we have the Last Post fund and the Commonwealth Graves Comission, the former ensures that Veterans families can bury their loved ones with out worrying about the financial burden and will ensure that the grave is maintained, or if damaged, repaired. The latter maintains the graves of the 1.7 million commonwealth soldiers graves all around the world, and maintains memorials as well. Both are government and privately funded and and do amazing work.

Here in the United States, we have the National Cemetery Administration, a part of the Department of Veterans Affairs. The NCA manages our National Cemeteries, the Army manages Arlington National Cemetery, and the National Park Service manages National Cemeteries affiliated with the Civil War. We have another federal government entity that manages our war dead buried in American Cemeteries overseas. While it would make logical sense to consolidate the care of ALL veteran graves under one organization, we suffer from lack of business minded people in our government ranks. In addition to providing headstones to the 16% of veterans buried within a National Cemetery, the NCA also provides free headstones for the 84% veterans buried OUTSIDE National Cemeteries. Some loved ones purchase private headstones for their veteran family member, while some order a free veteran headstone from the NCA. The NCA provides a free headstone to the veteran, and the NCA will replace a veteran headstone if it wears out or gets broken, but the NCA does not provide perpetual care for the government-furnished veteran headstones. And that is the cause of our veteran headstones falling into distress covered in biological filth. $700,000,000 annual budget for the 16% of veterans buried in National Cemeteries. $0 for the 84% of veterans buried in local hometown cemeteries.

You are correct. I would say 99.9% of Americans have no clue how to properly clean a headstone. That's why I petitioned the National Cemetery Administration to provide "we the people" with a set of instructions. It is extremely simple, but people don't know what they don't know. No bleach. No acids. No chlorine. No pressure washers. No metal bristles. No mechanical tools. Cleaning agents are limited to those with an active ingredient known as a quaternary ammonium compound, such as D/2 Biological Solution. Clean water is acceptable. And Orvis soap is considered to be safe, but I've never used it. Use a hand-powered scrub brush with bristles made from natural fibers such as Tampico. You are correct about marble, because it is relatively soft compared to granite.

Grandpa Webb: 1944?/1945?-1946?/1950? All I know is that he was in the army during WWII, he died in 1979 at the age of 52. Uncle Mike: served in Vietnam, died in 2006. Grandpa Buddy: my Grandma's second husband also served in Vietnam, died in 2004 the day after I graduated from highschool. Aunt Michelle: USMC 1988?-1992, because they wouldn't let her fight on the front line during the first gulf war. Cousin Dwayne: USN 2000-20??. He was at Pearl Harbor on 9/11/2001, was in Afghanistan and Iraq. I hope you have a wonderful day.

@@illinoiscentralrailroadfan6015 sounds like your family is among the Warrior Class of Americans. Mine too. It seems odd to me, but there are actually families in America with no active duty members of the Armed Forces nor veterans among them. I thought everyone had a grandfather or father who served in the military, but that isn't true for everyone. And you even have an AUNT Michelle who is a Marine! Once a Marine, always a Marine.

WE THE PEOPLE need to reflect more on the value of life and less on living it without care. Many died for their country since 1776. It is not enough to remember once a year. Today there are too many who take life for granted and do not appreciate those who made it possible for them. HISTORICAL FACTS ARE IMPORTANT. WE ALL KNOW, IF WE IGNORE HISTORY, WE WILL BE CONDEMNED TO REPEAT IT!

The judges I've met through various states, and especially back then. Woof, I think they only cared about their own self interests/family. No doubt at all that he didn't care at all about what he'd done for this random person.

It should not be up to the Federal to maintain state veteran head graves. The state should have that responsibility or state volunteers.

Went to the cemetery originally to clean my own family stones but ended up cleaning as many as I could before running out of water. I took an easier way out though and used a battery pressure washer and ran through some 16 gal. of water. But when done those stones looked new again.
@theyfaceeast6 ай бұрын
The National Cemetery Administration promotes no pressure washers, no bleach, no acid, no plastic bristle brushes, no metal bristle brushes, and no powered tools. I appreciate you cleaning headstones. I am guilty of not knowing what I didn't know. The preferred way to accomplish the same speed, well actually a faster speed, is to use a battery powered sprayer to apply water first to wet the stones, then apply D/2 Biological Solution to the headstones, then walk away. They won't look clean immediately, but this process creates no risk of damaging the natural stone. Come back a couple months later and the stones will look great!

This is a grass roots effort, so visit ByMemorialDay.com, watch all the videos on each web page, read the protocol issued by the National Cemetery Administration, and light the patriotic fire to clean veteran headstones in your local community. If someone already cleaned the veteran headstones in the first cemetery you visit, go on to the next one, and so on.

What has a pardon to do with anything?
@theyfaceeast6 ай бұрын
The idea of a posthumous pardon to a young man Killed In Action in service to our country relates to doing the right thing even when no one is watching. If the Governor of Alabama learned about this video, agreed this young man from Alabama is worthy of a pardon (he was a moonshiner, not a murderer), and held a press conference to present the pardon to this soldier's next of kin, it would make headlines nationwide. Does a pardon cost anything? No. Is there anything to gain from a pardon? Yes. First of all, it sends a message to all living Americans who may go into harm's way that they won't be taken for granted and forgotten after they come home in a flag draped casket. Second, it lifts a burden that is worthy of being forgiven. If you believe in the afterlife, then Fay Bolding will know. Third, a pardon in this case would create a TREMENDOUS amount of goodwill for the Governor of Alabama. 99% will love her. The other 1% needs to be shipped off to Iran for a reality check. And finally, the national attention will shine a spotlight on the plight of our veteran headstones covered in filth from sea to shining sea.

I won’t get into politics or things like that , I’m not American but I just want to say thank you, such a simple act like cleaning the head stone , really beautiful thing to do and genuinely touched my heart. You are a true good person . Blessings to you . I 💯 disagreee with many many things the British and American army do , the two world wars are different , these ppl had no chance , neither did the other side, we must remember the young who died there too but my respect goes out to every one who served in both world wars . Again thank you for what you’re doing, you’re truly wonderful . I really hope a famous rich person might help , honestly some soccer players on nba or nfl players could pay for you to do these with there spare change .
