I don't really like the SS Uniform style, its just too much black for my taste (not enough colour accent such as white and red). Nonetheless, i love the video. And looking forward for another video on military uniform style, their history, along with whatever symbolism they represent.

I liked it. Don't know if it's for everyone. I believe all discussions of fashion and style must begin with sociocultural context, and that means history. Why do U.S. residents think cowboy hats look cool, but sombreros look silly? It's the sociocultural context. Most AMCITS don't even know that their most iconic image -- the western cowboy -- is mostly a Mexican invention. I think understanding that context makes fashion and style more interesting and relatable. Everyone knows the swastika was the NAZI logo, but what of the NAZI brand? The NAZI brand was inevitability, ruthless persistence, and invincibility -- if those are your core beliefs and identity elements, then black is your ONLY choice for representing the brand. Camo -- such as our modern Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines wear -- represents ... what? It sure doesn't keep a sniper from whacking you, so why do we do it, and why do we change it so often? What is the U.S. military brand? What is our message? Unlike the NAZI's we no longer project our brand in our uniforms because we don't always want to be the same thing -- sometimes we are peacekeepers, sometimes we are bone-crushers, sometimes we are liberators, and sometimes we are unstoppable destroyers. So where's our brand, now? Not in our uniforms -- that's for sure -- all camo looks the same, at a distance. Our uniforms can no longer promote our brand, because the U.S. brand has become "tactics and technology." The SS was optimized for operations OTHER THAN WAR, and the stylish black uniform, so eloquently speaking to the NAZI brand, gave the SS the power to influence through fear. Fashion is ALWAYS about communication, and we all want our brand to be strength, confidence, honor, and integrity, tempered by generosity, self-sacrifice, and compassion. That is why a Marine makes a good men's style channel host: you already embody the brand which invokes the desired response in high-value women, and which commands the respect of all other men.

Two majors things contribute to that: 1. Pride, prior to the counter-culture revolution of the 60's most people took pride in their appearance as dressed as nicely as possible in public 2. No Fatties. Fat people are ugly. No amount of 'body positive' propaganda will change that fact.

@@jacekbojanowicz3828 Don't compare rock time's patch job with swing era's feathers and Disney's era suits. 50s was when fashion basically died and became a commoner thing. You can't compare a stereotypical pinstripe gangster look to anything after that. 50s was when that bland fabricated candy color stuff started coming. When you can hear every single damn video from that time starting with "the average american household" When plastic came and house commodities were big and tv dinner in a microwave was said to beat out a whole kitchen. There's a reason George Lucas used the Nazi uniforms as inspiration for the Empire. He even used the term "Stormtroopers" as well. The black, white and red colors used in Star Wars was purposeful and meant to bring the Nazis to mind when you saw them. Even Darth Vader's helmet has influences of the Stahlhelm.

Marine Corps, Army or or the NAVY dress slacks look terrible. In order to keep the tradition the US military branches have completely forgone the style that evolves over time. The main poroblem with US military slacks is that they are not even close to being tailored as the Nazis tailored their paints. The wide, even cut on the pants was a style 100 years ago when you could easily mass produce pants for the military and THAT became the tradition, that had no style at all. The bright red line and the bright blue pants just looks atrocious . You can see how much the BDUs have imporoved over time and how slimmer the pants have become, because they become easier to operate in. But dress slacks require no ease of use and therefore have never been improved.

One thing that is not mentioned here is that to get into the SS you had to be at least 180cm tall. The irony is that many of the high ranking officers did not actually meet the height requirements of their own elite club, yet demanded this from "lesser" mortals.

As someone swinging by from the historical dress community, I would like to add that across the vast majority of history, it was very difficult to dye fabric black and to ensure the colour didn't fade. Making it extremely expensive, thus only available to the rich and powerful. Eventhough at the time of the nazis it was more accessible, there was still this subconscious association that they where wearing black and thus must be of high status and rich. With synthetic dyes and fast fashion, everything is now easily and cheaply available, so it's easy to forget how costly some things would have been before all of that A source: Medieval fabrics and the use of colour, part 2. Himmler actually did have Military experience. He was in reserve units during the first world war. His unit was even called to the front, but recalled at the last minute. He continued to serve in reserve status until after the war. Once his time was fulfilled re went back to his family home. His main regret was not ever seeing combat. This was one of the driving forces that lured him to the Nazi Party. Mark Felton has a great video on this subject.

The Germans also created a focus group who's responsibility was to observe and evaluate the attractiveness of uniforms which were being developed for the German soldiers under the Nazi Reich. The evaluators were women, since the uniforms were also to be used for purposes of recruitment from German citizenry. I have worn these German uniforms (Wehrmacht) as a WWII reenactor and understand their appeal as a propaganda tool. They project efficiency and masculinity as part of their design, not only intimidation. The arms are shorter by modern standards. The sleeve cuff terminates at the wrist, not below as in modern suits. Also, the belt line was raised to about the naval. The effect was to make the soldier appear taller that he really was, an image of strength.

Something to keep in mind about Germany of that era, is that: 1. Nearly 90% of society wore a uniform of some kind, as every organisation had a separate uniform (Hitler Youth, NS Motor Corps, Police, etc). Even mailmen had a special uniform which looked badass. 2. German society had a huge militaristic ethos. Being in the military was considered the highest honor, above other civilian careers. 3. People were not "invited" to the SS. Before WW2, it was elite organisation which turned away 90% of German men. They had strict educational, physical, and even genetic requirements (proof of German ancestry at least back to 18th century I believe).

Nice video, just found a couple of mistakes/have an addition for you. 1 The Schutzstaffel had no arty or tanks? The Schutzstaffel had their own factories & logistics, they had the best weapons and they were the first ones to receive the newest arty, tanks and supplies. 2 we film since the late 1800’s. Calling it new in the 30’s is like saying internet is new today. In the far future it will be new today. But looking at it from the current perspective, film wasn’t new in the 30’s. 3 In October this year I talked for a couple of hours with a 102 year old veteran of the 11th SS Panzergrenadier Division Nordland. During this conversation I said that at least he fought in style with those uniforms. The man told me that from ‘42 on, he only wear white & green camo uniforms and that the black uniforms only where used for official occasions, not during combat because black is not a collour that is being found in nature. He also said that his father told him just before Hitler rose to power that it was important to watch all the political parties, how they dress, how they march and how they organise. Because a party that doesn’t have a nice uniform, can’t march and can’t organise, won’t get Germany out of the chaos it was in. 4 the collour black. The Alpine jagers (mountain troups) had white uniforms, the Sturmabteilung (SA) had brown uniforms, the regular Wehrmacht had grey/green uniforms, the marine had blue uniforms. When the SS was being founded, the only collour that was still available to distinct from other branches without being a bright collour unit, was black. So its not that they had a lot of choice. Keep up the good work. Kind regards

Really. I’ve always found it very clear. Nazis we’re stylish af. It’s probably part of what made them so attractive and seductive. That swastika looks dang good on the red flag and those uniforms and peaked military hats must have made the wearer feel legit and important. Even Hitler’s half cut look with the hair and tiny moustache looks pretty good, and then handsome, young looking Ralph Fiennes just looks so suave as Amon Goeth in Schindler’s List. They sure were snappy dressers.

Honestly when the Waffen SS was formed they were equipped with the Heer's "junk". since they were seen as a rival. It wasn't until the war in the east that some of the divisions were upgraded to full panzer units. Like I've stated before I'm going by what my great grandfather told me.

Our brains, and this goes to a majority of cultures, associate sharp edges, geometrical patterns, and broad single colors to neatness and symmetry, and symmetry is a major key to understanding our idea of beauty. The lines and broad strokes in the collar also look like they were influenced by the art deco style if not totally imitate it. Art deco is already considered a major aesthetic preference at the time so I think it also contributed to the view of the uniforms being stylish.

Also note symmetry is desirerble but not to much of it, that's why you see in uniforms (and suits) some elements not be completely geometrical. It has to do with our nature, a geometrical and balanced body gives us a sense of health and strength.. The kind of person you want to have children with, but a completely mirrored on both sides body/face it's unnatural and almost scary,. After all we're just super evolved monkeys
