On the 6th June 1944 my father was on Sword beach, landing with No. 6 Commando as part of the 1st Special Service Brigade. The first member of the 1st Special Service Brigade to set foot on Sword was its commander Brigadier the Lord Lovat, immediately followed by his "personal piper" private Bill Millin complete with skirling bagpipes. My old man was a few rows back from this. The craziness of playing bagpipes on Sword beach is one of the very few war stories he told me. (One of the others involved a much unloved and very arrogant 2nd Lieutenant getting "accidentality" bayoneted in the backside when going into action.)

Happy Birthday! Had a 'professional' driver in front on me today on the drive home, no signals four junctions in a row, swung wide, right into the oncoming lane to take a left (still no signal) and then we hit stationary traffic.... Then I spot the cigarette butt come out his drivers window (not allowed to smoke in commercial vehicle of course) so as my good deed for the day I hopped out and gave it him back, flicking it in from the drivers window with a cheery 'You dropped this mate'. He didn't half get a shift on trying to find it!!

Thanks Tony, that was really interesting, it brings back memories for me too. I was born in 1943 in Australia, and I remember my parents sending food parcels to England some time in the late 1940s. In 1965-67 I lived in Shepherd's Bush, and of course knew Hammersmith as it was then. Belated birthday greetings from Stockholm.

13:25. PEDANT ALERT!!! The Spitfire is the iconic aircraft in the Battle of Britain, but the Hurricane was the mainstay of RAF Fighter Command and downed many more enemy aircraft - 656 to 529. Indeed it was more successful than all other air and ground defences combined. OK, I'm better now. As you were

Exactly what I was going to say. The Spitfire was a match for the Messherscmicht 109, but the Hurricane greatly outnumbered the Spitfire and was easier to make and repair.

@scienceexperimentsforhomee261
@scienceexperimentsforhomee261 Ай бұрын
@michaelgurd7477 by this I assume you mean the system of radar stations, observer corps reporting to operation rooms which then directed which squadrons to scramble. It certainly played a large part but was just part of the whole system. I would say that Hugh Dowding himself and his second in command Keith Park had a much greater impact. I would also question whether the Battle was won by us and lost by the Germans. The Luftwaffe still existed afterwards and the plan to invade England was pretty fall baked compared to the planning that went into D day landings. The RAF continued to exist in October 1940 and thus deprived Germany of air superiority over the Channel.

I often say that Sadiq Khan is the worst thing to happen to London since the Blitz. I grew up in Hammersmith & now live in Chiswick. The roads around here have become increasingly worse over the last 20 years or so, all to kowtow to obnoxious cyclists who don’t even stop for elderly pedestrians on a zebra crossing! I cycle and I drive & around this area, I hate doing either! Tony, if you do happen to see a cyclist stop at red lights and follow the rules around this area, it’s most likely to be me.

Funnily enough, I shall be in Hammersmith tomorrow as I have an appointment at Charing Cross Hospital. I worked at the M&S in King Street for many years . I used to love the big Woolworths that was further up the road. Hammersmith has changed so much and definitely not for the better! I always look both ways, even on one streets, as bicycles and scooters never follow the road rules!

Good video mate, keep em coming. If the Krouts had taken London then the much tougher Northern Hordes would have kicked em out and save you Southern Softies. I wonder how many of those heroes would be so willing to fight now if they could see what this country has become. It was the Hawker Hurricane that won the battle of Britain not the Spit, mostly.

Being a bit (actually, a lot) older than the LDC I remember the empty streets with no traffic lights and no road markings.There were also (almost) no cars! The motor car has brought many benefits but some downsides. We have spent millions 'improving' the roads to accommodate cars and ended up with congestion and pollution. It is a bargain to spend thousands to encourage active travel instead. It might even do some good to get 'professional drivers' to walk for a change! Two can play the tongue-in-cheek game 😀 Happy Birthday 🎂

Hope you had a great birthday. I am a Middlesex girl from down the Uxbridge Road. My sister, when first married, lived in police flats near Cadby Hall, and I was often there in the 60s babysitting. I agree with you about a the landings too, not just the politicians, but do gooders, lack of backbone, and National pride and grit. Obviously, I'm older, so my parents' view of the blitz was different. My father enlisted, although too old and in a reserved occupation, negated him being called up. I agree with all comments you made.

Where you dropped your passenger off in King St is where I used to deliver stock to Moss Bros which was on the right. It wasn't fun in a 7.5 tonner and one day whilst I was unloading a septic (Yank) in a Porsche went down the road and parked outside one of the houses on the left. If you've seen some mid 90s porkers they live up to their name an have much wider wheels at the back than the front and accordingly he had parked at a slight angle to the left hand kerb because his front wheel was as close as he could get and the back left wheel was also touching the kerb. Needless to say I had to try to get my 7.5 tonner through the gap. Even on a normal day I had to fold my driver's door mirror to get through there due to there being a cast iron fence along the right of the street. Going as slowly as possible I edged forward and the tail lift stanchion just clipped the wheel arch of the Porsche and put a witness mark on its right rear wheel. The driver flew out of the house he was visiting accusing me of writing off his pride and joy. I laughed in his face and said that if he valued the car so much perhaps he could learn to park parallel to the kerb or park somewhere that was wider. Anyway, Happy Burpday Tony! 🎉🎊🎆

At 1:00 What are you saying🤨, just look at how organised our Government was in the way the managed Brexit. Ha ha lol. Oh and don't forget the Covid saga. ha ha At 13:15, yes the Spitfire was okay, but for me it was the Hurricane which I don't think gets enough publicity and recognition of what they did. Yes the resilience of the Brits back then was something to admire. The Gen Z and millennial generations did struggle to cope with the lock downs during Covid, not of the same character, and lack of being able to keep a stiff upper lip during adversity. Regarding Mr Kahn a song comes to mind 'Who do you think you are kidding Mr Khan, if you think we are on the run'. We just need some boy to stop his little game!'.... Otherwise Old London may be done. By the way happy birthday for yesterday.🎂

Another interesting fact about Hammersith is that it is where Charing Cross Hospital now resides. The hospital used to be in Charing Cross but the building became very outdated in the 1970s and in fact the first part was designed by Decimus Burton in 1820ish. I was involved in the conversion of that building into a new police station for the Met police in tbe 1980s.

The politicians back then were mostly just as bad - pursuing a policy of appeasement instead of opposing Hitler at his first transgression. We were incredibly lucky in one respect: we had Sir Winston Spencer Churchill. He did so much, both before the war and then once it had started, to rally people, to keep up morale, to get the best scientists working on plans (including the Mulberry Harbours and Landing Ship Tanks for D-Day, plus the Bletchley Park crew that cracked the Enigma code). Your words about D-Day being the beginning of the end reminded me of his speech after El Alamein: "This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is perhaps the end of the beginning." We have nobody in politics nowadays who comes within a country mile of Churchill.

The cycling infrastructure has to be there for it to be used so your rant is a little odd. I understand its partly tongue in cheek though 😝 The nore safe infrastructure that is in place, more people will be tempted to cycle in a city, which saves money and pollution in the long run. And that's exactly what has happened in Manchester. We now have thousands of cyclists using the lanes daily to commute, but it wasn't like that years ago when it was built. You have to build for the future not for today. Poor infrastructure or planning is a different matter

Sorry to contradict you on your history, the coalition during the Gulf War 1991 was a repeat. Having witnessed it first hand, as a serving soldier, I can tell you you you had countries that hated each other agreed with the Liberation of Kuwait and I know you're Londoner do not agree that it was a war, in fact their is NO memorial outside of National Memorial Arboretum at Tamworth of the service personnel lost during that conflict, even the Medal for the Gulf War was made meaningless as people on standby in London were awarded it.

On car pollution, it is roughly proportional to the amount of fuel you burn. The more you burn, the more NO2 and CO2 gets out. Slow driving creates less pollution than fast driving. Except, perhaps, from old cars with carburettors, which produced more soot at low speeds. But nowadays with fuel injection it is simply a matter of the total amount of fuel burned by all the vehicles, whether they rush through or crawl along. And as we quickly learn in electric vehicles, a slow journey uses less energy than a fast journey over the same distance.

The way I've got to answer that is what about Putney high Street one of the most polluted areas in Europe and you crawl through their very very slowly that sort of blows your theory out of the window a little bit I think

So, watch your mpg meter when you're crawling through traffic compared to cruising along at 50 mph and _then_ tell me which speed uses more fuel, and therefore produces more pollution. Hint, it's the opposite of what you claim. Only once you get into the territory where the square law effect of drag takes over does fuel efficiency fall off - for most modern cars the tipping point is somewhere between 50 mph and 60 mph. Electric cars are also subject to the same immutable physical laws of rolling resistance and drag, they too are most efficient at moderate speeds. The data to prove this can be easily found in any basic vehicle engineering textbook.

The thing is we are not talking about one car are we, we are talking about maybe 100 cars stuck in traffic going nowhere , like I say Putney high Street one of the most polluted areas in Europe because traffic just does not move down that street. And I'm not just talking about traffic because of the roads being busy I'm talking about traffic that doesn't have to be there because of other stuff put in its way like badly phased traffic lights cycle lanes that are not used things like that makes traffic and pollution.

A floater is also something you see in your eye which isn't there, and it's a sign that you're going blind.

Except that it's not a sign that you're going blind, it's a sign that you're getting old. Floaters are little bits of membrane that tear off as the vitreous humour detaches from the inside of the eye. This detachment happens to most people somewhere between the ages of 40-60, some get floaters, some don't.
