Do you want to learn more about World War II, but don’t have time to listen to lengthy audiobooks? Then let The History Journals take you on an hourly history tour of the different facets of the war. In this edition, discover the true story of the Normandy Invasion, or more commonly known as D-Day.
The 6th June 1944 has gone down in history as D Day, the beginning of the end of World War II. Code-named “Operation Overlord” the Normandy Invasion took the German Army completely by surprise, as British, American, Canadian, and Allied soldiers from all over the world stormed the beaches of “Utah”, “Omaha”, “Gold”, “Juno” and “Sword”. The weather was appalling and the seas of the English Channel distinctly stormy, but by bravely taking the initiative the Allies were able to liberate France and march towards Berlin and victory.
As a military operation, “Overlord” was strategically successful, but on a personal level there are many remarkable stories of courage and heroism: The acquisition of Pegasus Bridge, the wonderful welcome given by the newly liberated French, the brave rangers at Pointe du Hoc, the desperate battle for “Omaha” beach and the extraordinary Piper Bill Millin who played his bagpipes, waist deep in water, all the way from the landing craft to shore, and then onwards inland, through France.
This was a combined offensive where Army, Navy and RAF worked side-by-side, as Allied servicemen from all corners of the globe became comrades in arms.

I watched the credits and did a little 'research'.... The closing credits say "2005 Castle Home Video". Castle Home Video was incorporated in 1985 and wound up in 2015. The narrator is Liam Dale. He also produced and directed it. He also filmed some of the sequences (e.g. the Spitfire I guess). Liam Dale is a Producer, Director and Author. My first search turned up that has done a lot of voice overs. No mention of him being a professional historian. Sue Hosler did the research and wrote the script. I found references to Sue Hosler as a writer and producer but whether it's the same person I don't know. Neither Liam nor Sue were listed as directors of Caste Video. LDTV provided archive footage and did post-production. It would be interesting to know the process. That is, was the narration done then the archives searched to add matching (or roughly matching, very roughly) the narration. I suspect that may have been the case. Sometimes though you may have an old French documentary for instance, that gets re-cut and has a new translated narration added. I've seen that before. The Spitfire in the opening and closing sequences is UK-based and has been converted to a two-seater. Because of it's ability to take a passenger it has made a number of TV appearances. To my knowledge there weren't two-seat Spitfire trainers (maybe some later in the war?). New pilots basically read the manual, climbed in and hoped for the best. I think this would have originally been a video release (probably on VHS). It was probably aimed at an audience of middle-aged men with an interest in, but not an in depth knowledge of, history. The Best Documentary channel is listed as location: USA. I'm assuming the Best Documentary channel bought out the rights to the videos so it could post them on youtube. I've seen that scenario elsewhere. They seem to have been set up in 2016 (just after Castle Video closed). They have a facebook account but there's not a lot of information there. Hope this puts it into context for all those who seem to be taking this as the view of the British public. It's a twenty-year old video done by some people using archive footage. I think it would be great if people asked some questions about what they are watching instead of taking it at face value. There is a lot of stuff on youtube that is not quite what you think it is. Consume intelligently. 😀
@liamdaletv
@liamdaletv Жыл бұрын
Nearly accurate. I'm the director and narrator. Made this IN HOUSE from my archive and shot the Spit when filming Just Jane a Lanc bomber. Production was bought by castle home video as a VHS release at the time. 20 years later, I own all the rights again.. and licenced it for distribution by the company who presents Best Documentary channel. Blurred censoring is a call by YT.. if you don't remove dead people = it doesnt get advertising and money. Simples. Personally, I have re-edited this prog and about 100 others, sanitising them for YT.. I think the blurring process is a drag. Hope that helps clarity. LD PS: NOT an actual historian.. but 4 books to date and 30 1 hour versions.. qualifies me a little.. ;-)

Back in 1973 I read the book Dawn Of D-Day by David Howarth for an English oral exam, the first question I was asked was this… What does the D stand for in D-Day? I had no idea, it was not in the book. She stated the answer was Deliverance, as in Deliverance-Day! I’ve never seen it referenced anywhere in any shape or form since! Is there any truth in it & if not why “D”-Day?? Sounds good though.

This documentary repeats the fallacy that the Rangers mission was ineffective. The guns, though moved to an inland location, were found and destroyed. This kind of inaccuracy made my father, who was a 2nd battalion ranger, very disappointed to say the least. The mission at pointe du hoc was one of very few that were actually successful in the early hours of the beach landings.

@@brandmotivo you are wrong, any serious historian will tell you it was in fact the failure of Barbarrossa\Typhoon what marked the final outcome of the war. Germany needed to knock out the USSR during 1941 because they literally had oil reserves only for that push. Why do you think the 42' spring offensive was directed to the oil fields on the Caucas and was way smaller in scope (only the south front moved) while Army Group Center and Army Group North remain static, why do you think the 43' offensive was even smaller (Kursk) Also the attrition suffered by the German forces during Barbarrossa and the subsequent winter counter attack by the Soviets proved to be too much for the German army to cope. Im talking about staff officers, materiel, man power and so on. It also meant Germany was now involved in two fronts at the same time. Everything depended on the succes for the Germans of getting rid of Russia during 1941, wich never happend. You should watch TIK here on YT, give a look to his content, specially the ones talking about OIL and LOGISTICS. Because they were the deciding factors

@littlefluffybushbaby7256
@littlefluffybushbaby7256 Жыл бұрын
I doubt very much that the Canadians would have particularly wanted a sector. Most would probably prefer to go home. France had been invaded in 1870, 1914, and 1945 and it was important to the other allies to help re-build French pride because the alternative might be communism. That was a factor in the French going back into Viet Nam, and the consequences that had. You might want to check your facts about them all being volunteers. I've heard that often repeated but a quick look at wiki says that's not strictly true. Like most things in life, it's complicated. Personally I think it's more the economic support, the logistics, the equipment, the training, the motivation, the tactics and strategy that are the important factors in the effectiveness of a military rather than where they happen to have been born. If you're shot in the head it doesn't really matter what language you were speaking when the bullet hit. Sorry, I'm not a big fan of nationalist jingoism of any flavor I'm afraid. I'm not sure when conscription was brought in during WW2 in the different countries but during WW1 the troops for the first couple of years were volunteers. Volunteers will tend to be more effective because it was their choice to fight. Evidenced by the combat effectiveness of troops in Ukraine. Conscription tends to be brought in when you've run out of volunteers. I still think that where you were born is the bottom of the list of factors that really count. I'm not a great fan of nationalism of any particular flavor. It hasn't had a great history and it tends to be based on picking which facts to highlight.

@steincheers6031 // The problem is that the French are like a bathtub drain (think similar ana-logy). On June 6, 1944, D-Day occured FOR A ONE SHOT, ALL THE MARBLES DEAL. Heaven helped us that we did not incur heavy major losses. MY POINT, Allies were attempting to install a president to their liking instead of de Gaulle. He and the French Underground (marginal as they were) threatened to withhold intelligence, reconnaissance, and sabotage activities if we did agree to de Gaulle as president. ÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷ ALSO AFTER THE MASSIVE WITHDRAW FROM DUNKIRK, the French WOULD NOT place their ships under Allied command. French ships AND sailors were sent to the bottom of the sea. WE COULD NOT RISK THOSE SHIPS BEING CAPUTURED BY GERMANY. They are still pretty steamed about that.

The gaul of the creators naming overlord as being the defining battle of WW2 is just insane. It may have been for the US, Britain, and France, but the defining battle of WW2, (in Europe at least), was no doubt Stalingrad.
@littlefluffybushbaby7256
@littlefluffybushbaby7256 Жыл бұрын
Stalingrad was A defining battle but there are plenty of other contenders. Typhoon. Kursk. Bagration. Tunisia. The Atlantic. Plus many others. That's not counting the war with Japan. This is something historians debate to this day. Stalingrad was obviously a major defeat, but not the only one. But for many of these other battles Stalingrad wouldn't have even happened. I think saying there was one defining battle is too simplistic and, post Cold war, D-Day's importance is being rebalanced. Having said that there's no denying it was important. Just not as important as previously believed. There's also danger of swinging the other way and treating Stalingrad like D-Day was treated. The credits say the documentary was from 2005. It was also made for video release. It seems more like something from the 80's. I've seen a few of these video releases and they do tend to have a certain perspective. It you think this is bad watch the American equivalents. The Russian ones are even worse. I agree that it has a 'western front bias' but then again it is about D-Day. To me it sounds a bit dated and was a pretty shallow history. I'd expect something from this century to have a little bit more, but, as I say, it was a video release. When I looked up the author the first hit I got described him as a prolific narator rather than a historian. Personally I was more upset that when talking about German panzer attacks it showed footage of French tanks. Unfortunately that kind of stuff is pretty standard for documentaries. Most rely on stock footage and will use anything that's in the ball park of what the naration is saying. Often they seem to figure a tank is a tank, a plane is a plane, a ship is a ship, and the viewers are too stupid to know the difference. It's kind of insulting to the audience I think, but they all do it. I view most as entertainment rather than history. If you're expecting proper well-researched history you're looking in the wrong place. It is what it is.

@@PhoenixAscending well if nothing else it made D-Day possible: all those German troops, esp. tanks, panzergrenadiers, fallschirmjägertruppen, etc., not to mention Waffen-SS, who wouldn’t be taking any further part in the war, let alone being transferred back to Europe in a hurry or an emergency, practically crippled German capacity for any further major offensives (not counting of course the counteroffensive in Holland, the Ardennes, and the Vosges, but apart from that Hitler’s army was crippled as anything more than a desperate defensive force, and the initial defences in Normandy in June ‘44 was mainly Osttruppen (Eastern European conscripts from occupied territories, in fact two of the frightened young conscripts at Pegasus Bridge didn’t even fire their guns, but instead ran and hid spending the night under a bush, and were captured the next morning) and Static divisions consisting of “Stomach” and “Foot” regiments (old men with gut problems or in the latter case dodgy knees, hips, etc.), only one unit at Omaha was standard infantry, which is why it was so costly), and nearer Sword beach, a Panzer brigade under one of Rommel’s former favourites, Von Luck, who ironically after the war would befriend his adversary Maj. John Howard)

There are mistakes. The final intrument of surrender in the presence of commanders from England, the US and the USSR was signed on the 8th may (not the 7th) that's why the 9th may is celebrated as the day of VICTORY over fascism. With all due respect to the men and NCO's and dead of D-DAY they did a tremendous job second only to the efforts of the Red Army.

Very easy simple concept basic logic if life is not free why the hell would death be any cheaper it's not. So the question one may wonder is the spiritual cost to one's own soul and spirit for having lived and died only using the smallest percentage of A fraction of the true potential they were first born with equally as reckless neglectful at the same time to the lowest standards of quality for so many years now global pollution has diminished the quality of life to the point where today's people are living, dying and yielding the worst spiritual kickback that has ever been manifested since the beginning of life only getting worse. The polar opposite extreme to that is today's people should be living and dying to the highest standards of quality which would make each and every moment physically, mentally, financially and spiritually beneficial rewarding constantly consistently S.R.F.
