Surti Special Sarasiya Khaja is believed to be a seasonal snack popular in the diamond city of Gujarat. Although this may be true that it is a seasonal snack but yet it's now available throughout the year. Before we get into the nitty-gritty of surti khaja it's important to know what it is. Here you go.
What is Surti Special Sarasiya Khaja?
First thing first khaja is a typical monsoon delicacy available in Surat. Second, it is made using mustard oil and that is why it is called sarasiya khaja. However, these days people don't prefer eating khaja made in mustard oil. On the other hand, the local farsan makers too avoid the sarasiya tel and instead prefer kapasiya oil (the cotton seeds oil).
The bottom line is surti special sarasiya khaja is a staple breakfast item for the people of surat.
The History of Sarasiya Khaja
The roots of origin of this popular surti snack food lie in the 1880s. Yes, it is similar to the surti ghari. The sweet surti ghari is also a typical surti delicacy just like the khaja.
Okay back to sarasiya khaja. While doing my research on khaja I came across an article on the TOI website. Hence, I will present the same as it is without editing the same. Read below.
Khaja, which means just eat it, surfaced in the late 1880s. Hasmukh Ghariwala, 82, said, "During those days, the city used to have a horse race on four weekends of Aashad month of the Hindu calendar year. The race was held at Ghod Dod Road of today. The race used to start from Athwa police chowky and ended at Langar in Dumas. Some Krishnabhaktas are believed to have made this khaja. They used to distribute it before and after the race to people. It tasted wonderful with bowls of mango pulp."
So that was the fascinating history of the surti special sarasiya khaja. This is one of the best khaja and farsan in surat.
