This was a very satisfying find. A legitimate fanmade (is that an oxymoron?) Phantasm stage for Ten Desires. The music is fantastic, and the appearance of that manga character was unexpected. I feel like the artist didn't really nail the ZUN-style art (Ibara's fingers are too long and thin), though, and Murasa seemed out-of-place....

Ten Desires was the perfect excuse to bring Mima back, and ZUN knows it. That's what has the PC98 faithful so insanely pissed off.

This makes a lot of sense, Kasen should be the extra boss, and Byakuren Hijiri the Extra Boss, and the Animal danmaku make a lot of sense in Kasen. Zun stated the PC 98 characters will not come back.

Mima is the carrot Zun dangles in front of our faces when he wants an easy laugh. That is the sad conclusion I've come to over the years. If we see Mima again, there will be a VERY good IRL reason for it.

A little bit of research shows that the phantasm boss is a cannon character: Kasen Ibara. She is a character from the manga "Wild and Horned Hermit", continuously looking for the so called "arm of the kappa". Just in case you didn't know.

But that's how Touhou seems to work, most people make only one appearance, and some can come in again, like Yuuka and Alice for example. It all depends on what ZUN feels like doing, like if he wants a surprise or something.

Yeah, they 'were'. They were main characters when it seemed that they were best needed to be, like how Youmu is a playable character for TD probably because of her connection to spirits. Sanae is most likely going to be one of the more main characters because she's both a shrine maiden and trying to become a youkai exterminator.

Also, remember that the PC-98 story of Touhou and Windows story of Touhou are completely unrelated to eachother, and ZUN probably made it so that the events of PC-98 didn't exist for the Windows port. Besides, it's up to him to decide to include dearly beloved Mima-tan or easily forgotten Sara.

To be honest we can't be exactly sure a modified extra is a phantasm stage. ZUN never had or stated any specific guidelines for them, or not ones i have seen, anyway, that's just how the fandom interprets things over one entire phantasm.

I don't know really, maybe any of them will come back, but when ZUN feels like it rather than when people demand it. There's Yuuka... and Mima acually appeared on one of the covers of (also coincidential) the PC-98 remix CD's

that's why I said although it's fanmade, and there is only one official phantasm boss, if there were that extra spellcard for Kasen, it would be awesome, since most of Phantasm Boss' spellcards are base on the extra boss' spellcards, and the only one 'original' is the last one. Nazrin's was so good and creative that I was looking forward to Kasen's ;_; oh well

Well, she became the main character of a unique style of Touhou danmakufu, so she reappears alot. Reimu and Marisa too, since they have been in it since the beginning and have made a sort of permanent impact. That and during the incidents Marisa probably has nothing better to do, and it's Reimu's job. Mima, on the other hand, did like Marisa did, I think, and went because if nothing better to do. But, I guess a living, young, witch was kind of favored over the old, mature seeming, ghost.

Actually, there are several things that imply otherwise, mainly that the "Spell Card Break" sound effect is the exact same one used in the default Damakufu engine.

which Extra Boss has that? The last spellcard of an extra boss has never been a survival one, and the one I'm talking about is the one that only the Phantasm Boss has, like Yukari's Arcanum "Danmaku Bounded Field". Fanmade Phantasm bosses like Momiji, Mitori and Nazrin, they all have a survival spellcard at the end, and only Kasen doesn't.

I think all PC98 character is still owned by the Amusement Makers, but they might make an exception if ZUN chooses to, since ZUN was such a major part of PC98 games anyway.

Nue was the Extra stage mid-boss because the Extra stage boss was involved with Buddhism. I don't think Murasa would have any relations with Kasen although maybe she was following Nue and ran into the heroine? Not sure, I wonder what the dialogue translates to.

Of the 4 phantasms (MoF, SA, FW, TD) and 3 AfterExtras (MoF, UFO, DDC) this one is probably my least favorite. Some of the spells are pretty, but they don't look like they'd be very fun to play. That survival card is especially awful.

It's not that I don't like her, it's just I think I'm going insane from all the mima fans wishing for her to come back. while i can argue to it being far above TD standards kasen herself is..pretty strong.Being kind of a Hermit/Oni Hybrid is probaly an pool of potential power wich she can harness and if we take a look at ULiL story thee..only person capable of overpowering her is dear koishi..wich puts up the question how strong our dear instincts-lead satori really is ... I agree. This is a little bit of a spoiler, but Kasen's strength is kinda proven by Wild and Horned Hermit chapter 35, where Yukari of all people addresses her as a fellow Youkai Sage. That means she was one of the ones that proposed and helped create the Hakurei Barrier and Gensoukyou itself. Yukari also said that she was waiting for Kasen to come to her side in whatever the heck she's plotting this time, so there's that. At any rate, all hail the Gap Hag.

Wrong on the "books" thing (manga =/= books, there are Touhou books and Touhou manga, Wild and Horned Hermit is a manga,):The Three Fairies of Light were the protagonists of Strange and Bright Nature Deity/Eastern and Little Nature Deity, and they were the antagonists of Great Fairy Wars. But anyway, let's all have fun laughing at the Mima fans. HAWHAWHAWHAW, Yuuka and Alice are both in the top 10 in 2ch and Nicovideo popularity polls and Mima was in the 70s as of 2012.
