Күн бұрын

The Prussian military musician Gottfried Piefke composed in 1864 during the German-Danish War on the occasion of the storm of the Prussian troops on the Düppel hills, where Danish troops had set up for defense, two military marches: One is the Düppeler Sturmmarsch (Army March II, 185), the other, much more famous of the Düppeler Schanzen-Sturmmarsch (army march II, 186), which today is almost exclusivelyknown only as Düppeler Schanzen Marsch.

They are rousing and stirring, hence well-written by Gottfried Piefke. And that gets into your blood quite irrespective of your nationality. :-) Interesting to see the differences between Prussian, Saxonian and Austrian marches too.

I don't know, if the story is true: Mr. Piefke put three army bands together and supported the assault by conducting this and other marchmusic himself. Schanzen, i don't know the english word are not man made hills, but fortlike wood and earth fortifications errected with much work and effort.
@brittakriep2938
@brittakriep2938 6 ай бұрын
@nordicpatriot : Intressting, this is related to french redouit. Is this in english also a mostly temporary fortification? In german a Schanze is mostly a temporary fortification. In case of sieges ( before Vauban era) a Schanze was in siege warfare often a parr of Circumvallation or Contravallation, or as socalled Lagerschanze ( Lager- in this context not beer , but Camp), which means that when in Thirty Years War an army decided, to not move in winter, they build a lightly fortified winter camp, with tents , wooden huts ( in german Baracken), including houses being there. Natural obstacles ( little rivers/ Bäche, downhills/ Abhänge, small glens, hills) to save work. The mostly light fortifications of such a Lagerschanze consisted of dugout ditches, the removed earth used for ramparts ( german Wall- english rampart, english wall- german Mauer), pallisades, fences, pointed poles or large baskets, filled with earth ( Schanzkörbe). Also large bundles of branches ( fascines, Fascism- party sign of Mussolinis Party was roman fascine bundle of roman lictores, a bundle of rods and an axe). English rod- german Rute. Schanzen had also been build as a kind of substitute for a real fort. Sometimes surprisingly an unimportant site got military importance. A Schanze was build, and sometimes transformed into a regular fort. When in 1930s german Westwall ( Siegfried line) was build, a larger bunker was on position of a 17th century Schanze. Also: After end of medieval era, many german castles ( Burgen) had been transformed into palaces/ manors/ halls in which a high or low nobleman had a life of comfort and represenation. But in case of war, sometimes a palace site again got military importance. Often the modernized palaces had fortification relicts. Thick walls, towers, ditches, old buildings with loopholes for firearms, natural defences ( hilltops, lakes, River knees, swamps) or Iron fences, hedges or park walls. So in Case of war, former medieval castles ( Burgen) could be transformed into auxillary/ replacement forts with Schanzen, field fortifications or simple barricades. Oh, next to my german homevillage was up to 2004 former Military Training Ground/ Truppenübungsplatz Münsingen, used since 1890s by Royal Württembergian, Reichswehr, Wehrmacht, Bundeswehr and french troops. On the territory of the training ground are the relicts of a small medieval castle. Nearly totally destroyed by modern soldiers. Why? Even in modern days, the location of medieval castle has Military importance! The modern soldiers dug their modern day foxholes in castle relicts!
