Beautiful! Wow!! Is that actual sound the first 4:30 of the clip or is it dubbed in? It does not seem to match up with the revolutions and sounds like a recording from within a passenger compartment. Just curious. I doubt the drone would have great recording abilities so i would understand if sound was dubbed in. At any rate, thanks for posting!

Thank you for the kind words. The audio was dubbed in from the ground camera but the engine was traveling at different speeds which made it impossible to match it exactly.

RIP Coal... No idea why they actually abandoned that fuel. Were they sued? Did insurance refused to underwrite them? Coal is so much cheaper than oil in the mountain west... but here we are....

I believe an important part of the switch was due to embers from the coal were causing fires. Plus, other environmental concerns.

It was an internal decision. No one forced them to do it. It sucks though because they erased history forever. I would never ride the D&S again, all they care about is money. The C&TS is still pretty authentic.

When D&S originally announced the decision to convert from coal to oil fuel, management promised that one steam locomotive would remain a coal burner, only to be run in the winter when the fire danger was low. (At the time the reporting seemed to imply they were pretty emphatic about this. The railroad recently converted that last locomotive to an oil burner also, with no explanation for the change in policy. It seems to me that they mislead the public. I feel D&S owe their fans a thorough explanation as to why they went back on their decision to retain one coal burning locomotive. It had been widely reported that they had contracted to buy four MLW diesel-electrics from the White Pass & Yukon and in addition to buy four brand new custom-built diesel electrics. It would seem that with a fleet of eight diesel electrics, they could have well have retained one coal burner. I disagree that the reasons for this change of policy have been "well documented".
