LOL! OK New Zealand guys, I know you are a LONG way from America. I own an "old" D4 "fifty something" CAT tracked loader and it has a "petrol" engine to start the diesel. however, OVER HERE that "petrol" engine is called a PONY motor - NOT a "donkey" motor. i do like watching you guys mess with old construction iron.

Those have a two piece head gasket, they’re totally reusable- you simply back off the head bolts 1/4- maybe 1/2 turn then retorque. Starting fluid is always a great thing to give to it. The fuel rack on the injector pump may be stuck as well so only a couple of the injectors were firing?

Just found you blokes, I’m a Kiwi also and a year earlier model than the D2……funnily enough I have a similar starting procedure these days….a choice of “Pull start, Push start or Crank start”, the easy battery start failed terminally some time ago😂.I look forward to more of your projects, great stuff!
