Good description of how to do it. The problem is sometimes the lock nut tries to turn the screw, and it can be hard to prevent that. Terminology in the US is 'lock nut' for that nut and we would say 'eight thousandths', not 'one eight thousandths of an inch'. So the fraction is 8/1000 of an inch. As I said before, I love all of your videos.

Very nice, well done. I must say I am amazed at how good your English is, all of grammar, vocabulary, and accent. You sound like a native. (One very minor comment I'd make, though, if that helps, is that to avoid misunderstanding, it is more common, in the US at least, to say "8 thousandths of an inch", or "8 thous" colloquially, rather than "one 8 thousand of an inch" as it sounded like you said and which suggests more 1/8000, which is a different number. Yes, it's tempting to do because of our screwy fractional system, I know. It's even more confusing when you hear some people call the thou a "mil" which sometimes happens, and makes little sense unless you are semi-metric. Having said all this, I understood perfectly what you meant.)

Nice detailed explanation. Incidentally, a long time ago I had it explained to me that when checking the gap it is easier to use the feeler gauges either side of the stated one, for a 'GO' - 'NO GO' test. I assumed it was because it is subjective as to how tight, tight is when you use the stated size, mind you it is always reassuring to use the stated one after and feel it slide in nicely.
@D3Sshooter6 жыл бұрын
Yes, indeed and thanks for your comments.. I know an old ( well very old) mechanic, and he never used gauges.... he just has the feeling for the gab in his fingers....or at least that is what he says... and with old engines, I can believe that he is right.... vlaves might tick a bit...

Why exactly do you adjust the valve gap on cylinder 4 on its power stroke just after its TDC (compression stroke) ? I cant understand this yet. On its compression stroke the both the inlet & outlet valves on cylinder 4 are closed - why cant the adjustment be done on this stroke?

I've always assumed that they got it wrong in the manuals for the 23c engine. Every other engine that I have been able to spec with adjustable valves has the clearance larger or the same for the exhaust valves for what I consider obvious reasons. The exhaust valve runs hotter and there fore , once the engine is at temp, it is expanded more than the intake valve. I find it odd that there is not more info/discussion of this anomalie.

The Ferguson 35 had several engines fitted. Tvo Petrol Diesel And perkins diesel 3 cylinder. One of the engine fitted was of the standard motor company. Which was cars and also fitted to the Coventry climax fork lift truck. It was the standard engine which gave fault . And you had to use bradex easy start to get it going either to put patients out for surgery. This was due to a design fault. As instead of using direct diesel injection it used a method called indirect injection as it went into a small chamber in the head before going into the cylinder for compression. Known as an indirect direct compression chamber. . It did not work very well. As the engine ware took place. So a bit of a pig to start. Hence you needed either to start it . Pure alcohol. Hope this has helped you to understand the standard engine fitted to the 35. The perkins 3 cylinder was far more superior. Engine.

Some engines built had valve clearance the same some as you say had inlet one gap and exhaust another gap. So you are correct in what you say .

yes . good . guess what else can expand more Once the Engine is at Temp... for what I consider obvious reasons. 🤔

Very clear , you are an excellent teacher . A question for you . I have a Grey Gold FE35 and i think its the same or very similar engine to the MF35 ( 23C Standard Motor co engine) Does your engine have a mix of bolts and studs to secure the head down ? Mine has and the studs have a 1/2 inch UNF thread while the bolts have a 1/2 inch UNC thread . This , in theory should require two different torque settings .However the manual states a torque of 95 to 105 lb/ft for all . Is this a mistake in the manual or is there some other reason why the torques is uneven this way ?
@D3Sshooter4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments and indeed its the same on mine. As for the torque , I do consider it as the range it has to be in. These engines are very forgiving.... But maybe some one has another experience.

There is something missing on this engine. There should be wear caps on top of the valve stems. Actually they are called wear caps on the intake valves and rotators on the exhaust valve. But the look the same, except the different size. Someone has lost them in the past. Or forgot to put them back.
@D3Sshooter6 жыл бұрын
SLORRIFJART321 , txs. That is interesting. Do you have picture or so. I am interested in it
@Drottninggatan20176 жыл бұрын
I believe they are also called "lash caps". This would be the one for the intake valve: www.jensales.com/products/massey-ferguson-intake-valve-stem-lash-cap-mfs2307.html And the ones for the exhaust would be larger but else the same. They don't list the Standard Motors 23C there, but it might be the same wear cap for both the Continental and the Standard Motors engines. It just has to fit the valve stem with approximately 0.32" I.D. for the intakes and 0.38" for the exhaust.
