DM is a legend man, in the mobile gacha gaming space he saved many of us so many megabucks over the years and despite him being a well known whale, tried his best to help free to play players avoid pitfalls of lots of money spent. He's never changed his format and that's why he's one of the realest ones.

I been playing PoE without a guide and I knew nothing going in. I’m loving it. I’m like DM. I’m not trying to beat every single aspect of the game into the ground, just trying to have fun, and so far I’m loving my random ass build and just evaporating enemies.
@Venvaneless
@Venvaneless 11 ай бұрын
Same. Many things irritate me in Path of Exile, it’s not easy, it’s often frustrating even, but what I won’t ever do is copying other builds to make it easier, then I can give up already. It’s one thing to get inspiration or learn what different nodes mean and do, and other thing to just copy blindly, like many suggest the newcomers should do. I love the approach DM took - he wants to create something he wants to call his own accomplishment! I promised myself, that each league I set myself a goal to learn one specific thing or mechanic. This time I want to learn the witch class and the passive tree. Next time, I want to create one or two builds to specialize myself in one or two mechanics (depending which will make the most fun), so that I can learn those too. When I feel confident enough with all the things I learned, I’d like to try crafting to sustain my builds. All of that I will probably have to learn slowly and independently, but I want to do it right and most importantly, to not forget having fun. It’s not a job, we don’t need to impress anyone. Trying to learn everything at once, you won’t be good at anything. Many coming into this game saw some streamers, with their high DPS/vitality ratio clearing everything on screen with their flashing eyes-sore skins and expect to be the same, forgetting those players they watch, for them the game is much as a hobby as it is a full time job. The race to the top is saddening and kills for me the fun. I don’t want to be „the best“ - I want to have fun and get good at things that feel fun. Many seem to forget it’s still „only“ a game and take it so seriously… it’s all about min-maxing, forgetting to HAVE FUN.

I think most PoE players are mad about D4 is that Blizzard learned nothing in the almost 10 years of development nightmare of D4, they didn't look at what the community liked, they didn't try to launch a finished game... the lack of care and the disrespect is what killed the fanbase.
@bobbobb5759
@bobbobb5759 11 ай бұрын
Of course they learned. but they're a business and hate or or love it, they aren't going to pile every single best thing ever into the initial release - cause then they have nowhere to go. is it shit? maybe... but to to think they're unaware is comical.
@renzuki5830

@@bobbobb5759 There are a LOT of bad design choices in D4. The horse doesn't even work properly on PC, nevermind that the time you mount and remount timers make it feel like a chore. I don't even think they can make good itemization. They haven't done it well since the D2 people left. Then there is a huge focus on the "MMO" aspect of the game and the most common reaction to it I have heard is "yea I guess, not great not bad, wouldn't care if it didn't exist". So long story short they "learned" on the business side, but I am unsure they can still make great games while doing so. Certainly D4 for me was one of the worst gaming purchases in 30 years of gaming for me.
@naldric
@naldric 11 ай бұрын
@@bobbobb5759 Except that with the poor reception, the game is already dead... people are not expecting anything from D4 anymore and most wont ever go back. They are now waiting for PoE2. At least it served one purpose, to show those who thought Blizzard wasn't dead yet...

@@naldric I love people that still think that the people making the decisions at blizzard aren't completely detached from video gaming as a whole. They have no clue what a good game is, nor do they understand what players like in their games. If they understood even a scrap of that, then D4 wouldn't have launched the way it did. It's almost comical how awful the "leadership" roles are at ACTUALLY running their business. It just proves how absolutely worthless the silver spoon class of people are and watching them trip over themselves into failure that is EASILY avoidable is pretty funny.

I think the first play through is more fun guideless, as long as you accept you won't get as far. a playthrough guideless generates personal questions which are either answered through more play or through the 2nd play with the guide of a similar build. Those answers stick harder because they were generated by your own experience, it's not just reading and trying to remember stats/facts.
@utmastuh
@utmastuh 11 ай бұрын
I tried that and rage quit haha. The game does a very poor job of explaining anything to you and even the official company sites don't really explain much. You have to have a degree in PoE to truly understand wtf is going on and that comes with experience. I'd highly recommend first playthrough to follow a good guide and 2nd playthrough to wing it . Everyone has their own way I guess
@BuzzaB77
@BuzzaB77 11 ай бұрын
@@utmastuh yeah it's different for each of us. I'm definitely the kind of player this game is designed for, If I find something new I don't understand I'm actively excited to learn about it, as opposed to being discouraged and giving up. That's why the skill tree is the way it is, the designers said there was no point hiding it, you either see that and know you want to learn more, or you want to go play a simpler game. There's no point hand holding players through the beginning pretending the game isn't complex, only to lose them anyway much further in. It's much more respectful to a players time to let them know up front what they're in for and I respect that.

True, I remember when I started a couple leagues back. It took me ages to learn anything, like multiple leagues. Been worth it though. For most of us we have the internet for information but when we ask a question we don't get immediate response like a streamer does Streamers do have this weird opinion that things are easier than people say purely because their experience is extremely handheld. Was watching a streamer swearing that pugging dungeons in wow always goes smoothly without issues, even with the community telling him that it's a shitshow. When he signs up for any dungeon the viewers sign up immediately with him, so he actually never gets the experience that others do. But he kept acting like he did, it was weird

Our chat never agreed on anything except for using a lootfilter. Not to mention his 3 acts was years ago. The game is very different now. I’d say he did this about as blind as a streamer possibly could without turning off chat entirely.

I also have been playing without following builds in POE and I'm super glad I did so. I think a new player can benefit from a couple beginner guides just to understand overall concepts like resistance, etc. But if I had to alt tab every time there was a decision in the game and check off skills on preplannned list, I'm almost 100% sure I would've been bored of the game before the end of Act 3.

I think the main thing about using a guide to play for your first time, it’s like using a guide when playing a puzzle game for your first time- it ruins the fun of discovering things for yourself. I get the logic behind it, but DM is right, it depends on your goal. You can still enjoy PoE even if you can’t take on pinnacle bosses, and pinnacle bosses shouldn’t really be in a brand new player’s goals in a game that requires as much ambition as PoE does

I think when we PoE veterans think about the complexity of mechanics, we are always one step ahead of a new player. For example a new player does not know the importance of movespeed on boots, so he does not give a damn. He is happy when he gets some res and life. I convinced 2 friends to try poe after d4 and it was eye opening for me. They enjoyed stuff i never would have thought. Especially crafting. After getting a decent chest piece by spamming alts, one of my friends was not shy to regal and slap on that "can have three crafted mods" for 2 divs. While I would have saved up those for something way better. But he was happy and proud of his new chest (rightfully so). The same guy now delves like a mad man to self earn his fossils to then spam them on questionable bases.

I agree with DM, PoE is not as complicated as people make it out to be. It's like a programming language, if you take it step by step you will understand all that messy code you saw earlier and it won't be messy. PoE works the same way. If you just look up a build you'll see this "messy code" and you'll copy it but you won't understand it. But if you just progress PoE by yourself step by step you will start to understand it instead, will you get Shaper down on your first character? Probably not, but you will have created understanding and that is the important part. This is the reason people suck at crafting, only some people can actually play SSF because they know how to craft, same thing applies. If you just zoom out you will get overwhelmed but if you take it step by step and learn each crafting method at a time you will get there in the end. PoE is *deep* but it is actually not as high IQ requiring as people want to make it sound. *Heja heja heja*

The question if you want to use a guide or not is answered by "know thyself". You want to balance the wiki/guide time with the play time around your personal needs. I had a friend who followed all the advice and just quit the game because he was bored, didn't really understand anything in the guide, faced little challenge and didn't want to invest all the research time anymore. I started the game hardcore blind (wouldnt recommend nowadays) way back when, which no one would have "advised" to do. Still I loved the experience.

I went through 2 characters blind ( no build guide) my first play through was great as necro and I loved all the overwhelming stuff POE had to do, but had fun with the game before really worrying about all the extra stuff. My character now uses a build guide and I'm at endgame and loving all the content POE has to offer. I get what he's saying(DM) but he isn't looking at it as a casual/average gamer tho. Investing 10-20 hours beating the campaign the first time to find out your build is just too hard to respec fully because you started out blind. Alot of people would quit I've assume if they play like 2-3 hour per day on average. My suggestion is to have 1 full respec like D2/D2R as a quest reward. They can even look at the data when most people quit during the campaign and add it around there.

about the pause to identify in D4, I think the constant level scaling is also adding to that issue. If you DON'T stop to upgrade gear at every level threshold, you will miss an upgrade of some sort and fall behind in DPS. It's not just the constant loot and inventory, it's the fact that what you are farming does not stay at a static difficulty which would let you farm up and prepare for the next tier. I think making early crafting easier would definitely be a good thing. requiring a chaos for a random chance of having something okay is a high cost. If only having blues through the campaign was enough then maybe it wouldn't be so bad... But you need so many stats covered to be able to make it through, especially resists that you can't really have 'fun' with items until later game. But there are SO many mods and tiers of them that there's no real way to craft 'the item that you want' without investing several mirrors.

i get what you are saying with "minions are easier to start", but thats a trap in my opinion. you dont learn the mecanics, sometimes the boss will just not target you, sometimes it will feel random to a new player when something targeted towards a minion that is in front of you and you get hit. its hart to get a feeling for encounters. dangerous rare mods, tanky rares, all will feel the same for some1 who cant figgure out whats going on. you also dont really learn whats hurting you and what should be dodge/avoided and whats fine. it has to hurt sometimes to learn. theres a lesser learning curve on cheesing stuff with a mecanic that makes you not have to deal with dangerous enemies.

I don't think there's an extreme on both ends of gameplay. You don't have to study the POB and cram like a test, there's a happy medium between casualing and POB, especially with classes like Marauder. One of my first characters was a ranger and all I did was build up anything that sounded like it'd match with toxic rain, totems, and poisons/chaos. More recently, I followed a build halfway for a Soulrend thief that mostly takes advantage of Bane after I finally found a 6-link robe that had 4 blue, 1 red, 1 green socket. It was corrupted, sadly. Still I went from basic soulrend to taking down huge circles of mobs and some of my passives aided me in switching from Soulrend main to Bane. Now I am working on a Frost Blades, a Necro, and Explosive Arrow. All without having to use much of a guide but I still go to guides for hints of how I might be going wrong in some aspects. I have this Duelist Champion that has a guide calling on me to use this specific sword and has me on a build to buff sword gear. I skipped all that sword sh!t and went with a mace. I feel that you don't have to follow the guide to the letter, understand all its mechanics, and then get into the game. I think you can open a few guides, affirm your choices, and have wiggle room. The fun here is that you're playing someone's /guides/ your way.

But do i like playing my game... i mean yeah..... maybe not to the point of hell yeah GOTY... but i still had my fun... but honestly, sometimes when you start watching help videos to learn some stuff, every videos almost say that you should use a guide and don't compromise... that instead sometimes just drop my enthusiasm tbh.. I just feel like the community is too sick of people complaining about not making it to the endgame but didn't follow a guide but at the same time, resulted in this almost "verbal pressure" on using guides for every single person trying the game.... just my own 2 cents... sorry, a little rant when watching poe help videos..

Ghazzy really underestimates how big of a deal the "sense of discovery and experimentation" can be for people going into PoE blind. Some players are absolutely starved for a game that offers insane depth, so PoE is like a feast for them. Following a guide on the first try would deprive them of this experience. I fondly look back on my characters from 10 years ago to see what I thought made sense back then. The overemphasis on guides also seems rather dated. There has been so much powercreep in the game that all you need are some basic guidelines (cap res, amass hitpoints, etc.) and a completely new player can cruise into maps.
@kirktown2046
@kirktown2046 11 ай бұрын
Starting with a guide ultimately reduces how much enjoyment a new player can get out of the game. Hitting plateaus and conquering them is absolutely part of the fun for many players. If you want more new players to stick around, POE needs a new/improved social components.

As someone who has played Diablo for at least 20 years I was very excited about D4. The Campaign was great, but everything after that was boring. I do like the helltides. I can’t believe they got rid of the sets of gear. I found myself giving D4 multiple tries with different characters and play styles, but in the end everything was so far away and you had to use the stupid horse to get everywhere. Why did the put all the shops so far away from each other. You lose so much time. I just started playing POE and I found it challenging but a great alternative to D4. Thanks for your video!

PoE "veterans" simply forgot or are blinded by the fact that a new player understands NOTHING, therefore, following a build guide does NOTHING for them. I'm a new player in the game, testing out a lot of skills, combos, you reach a point of common sense and understanding of the game by yourself, step by step, and most importantly, you have fun. If someone is completely new, mentioning skills, why do X, why do Z, mean absolutely NOTHING, it's just a layer of confusion. A tip to give to new players is to stay consistent with an archetype and respect defensive stats. Just playing the game and trying to understand what X stats do is a long process. After you've reached a medium knowledge of the game, following guides to get an idea of min-maxes that you don't have IS a good option, but AFTER learning the fundamentals of the game by yourself and discovering all the mechanics, the game itself is not as awful as it seems to introduce new content since it gives new skills through quests and incrementally, introducing auras, golems, active skills, support gems, and so forth. The game gets complicated when you have to improve your crafting and embrace some league mechanics, but other than that, the players are more than capable of beating the campaign with a fresh character and no guides, or even maps up to tier 10 easily. New players are not focused and are not supposed to be focused on high-end game content with maxed-out gear to beat uber bosses.

The main difference between Poe and Diablo 4 stems from the moneytization path they have taken. D4 is an upfront cost game, so it's income sheet does not care that much about how many are going to keep playing the game. The sooner it becomes irrelevant, the sooner they can drop the online-support for it, thus making it not eat resources. Poe is free to play-game with in-game content purchases, so it wants to keep the players hooked, making them to invest more and more to the game. So basically you could view it like this: You're a female in the world, D4 is a handsome tool with a lack of character and who mainly just wants to spend a night with you, but as soon as they have had you, they will want to ditch you. Poe is the more casual looking guy with character that wants to keep you and take care of you for the long-term company. As a player, it's your choice which one you want to have, but I think it's fair to say which one is generally the more positive option.

The huge issue D4 fans dont understand is that over the next several years, patches and content updates will not bring D4 to POE level. The fundamental basis that D4 is built on do not allow the game to ever start reaching for POE heights... The game literally does not have the capabilities.

DM's take on itemization just reinforces my belief that sockets/links need to be reworked in PoE 1 as well. Like we don't need the whole gem crafting thing from PoE 2 but seriously just remove socket and link RNG from the items like what was originally announced.

I think the POE community needs improve and how they explain. I learned much more after tried my own build and realized later where I got wrong then reading guides.

I was prepared for complex game systems and learning them, but even then its just absurd how many abbreviations and mechanics are thrown around in even beginners guides. Even 50 hours in I couldnt make sense of lots of things in my guide; "take your plumbus base and multimod Fire dmg, drop it on the ground and step on it so it gets fractured, then take it to the horticrafting and throw purple goo on it" I appreciate a lot of the content creators, but a REAL beginners guide is still very hard to find

I understand what ghazzy is saying when it comes to not looking at items but i feel like that only happens at the very end game. If youre not looking for something special on boots but you know you're using armor then every armor base boot that drops can be good because it can always have more life, res and movement speed.

I think there can be more than one "kind" of ARPG. I get a bit irritated when people refer to ARPGs as a singular design philosophy that all games of the genre have to share. Now this is pretty old school, but I think of it a bit like, Baldur's Gate vs Icewind Dale. They are both CRPG's but players will tell you that the style and design philosophy of the two are quite different. Baldur's Gate focuses more on a story with intriguing character progression whereas Icewind Dale focuses more on combat and skill/power progression.

I love D4 it is blast to play. I hope that after they get their footings they will keep adding interesting mechanics. It is good foundation better than POE when it first was released and I would even argue better than first like 4 seasons of POE as well. POE was realllllly rough for a long time. Damn near unplayable in terms of performance until very recently.

Its so funny how they are so different that Ghazzy was unable to connect on most of his points of PoE with DM. He's ranting about crafting or loot and DM is just like "no for me its cool, i like it compared to D4". Passion is ok and all, but i think DM's experience shows that PoE doesnt need to be "friendly" or think hard about first time players for them to have fun. I myself was exactly like DM, for my first year playing PoE i wasnt looking for guides the only thing going for me was my experience from D2. I certainly made several dogshit builds, but i loved them anyway (have all my first 3 characters still in std for nostalgia). You dont have to know everything from the start if you having fun exploring thats the best way to play.

Not sure I'd agree that I was unable to connect considering the fact that we are literally just having a conversation based of opinions & experiences we have with the game, one of us being 9+ years of experience and the other being very fresh in to the game. The whole point was to just talk about different perspectives which I very much enjoyed doing, things I personally consider "problematic" with the game will absolutely be different things compared to someone who's fresh to the game. I believe it's important for guide creators like myself to be open minded and hear other perspectives consistently as it helps me improve the quality of my own guides as well :)
