Clearing the stumps away with the old D6C Manual shift Caterpillar to make skidding the logs easier. I knock the Aspen trees down with the cat and then cut the stumps off with a chainsaw. Then i haul the logs home a cut most of them up for firewood

You know if you ever got into a new D6 you'd have to take up Smoking and Texting so your hands would have something to do. Fun Video.

Thats a smooth shifting direct drive , that old D7 (1947) I used to run when my POS D8 (cable /but with power shift) _ was broke down would work you to death . Not so much the clutch and shift work as it would not steer to the left unless pushing a blade load and then you had top stomp the left break hard and pull that left clutch too . But would steer fine in reverse so to go left forward you had to reverse and pull the right steering clutch ...... but when 18 everything was fun

When I was small, I always wanted to become a heavy equipment operator; a dozer operator in particular. The opportunity never came. There's a semi-retired owner up north that has over 45 older caterpillar crawlers, a few D-7's and D-8's, but a lot of D-6's. It appeared that the D-6 was his preference for his line of work.

Well it's a small world...I was in Grande Prairie in the late 70s working in the oil industry. I'm retired now but I much prefer the old Cats compared to the new ones...the new ones are boring to run.

@@marqy007 I bought this machine in the late 70s but didn't do much in the oilfield till the early 80s with it so I guess not much chance i ran into you

Dang good operator man. Very hard to find anyone now days that can operate anything. Everyone thinks they can but all they mostly are is steering wheel holders or lever pullers. Got a new d6t at work. It's so comfortable and nice compared to the terex cable dozer I started on

Thanks man. Haven't spent much time in the seat at all in the last 20 years or so. I guess it is a bit like riding a bike. I really enjoy it. The new machines look amazing but have never actually run one but it looks comfortable. I don't mind running this old girl at all though. I have had her for over 40 years.

@@AndreasvonT Andreas...just watched your vid again...taking a ride on the way-back machine haha. The new gear today, which I retired from 10 ten yrs. ago in Ft. Mac, are like driving a car! All enclosed cab, quite as a Cadillac, CD player/radio, adjustable air ride seat w/ pump-up lumbar seat, air conditioned, two joy sticks, two foot pedals w/ sticks to grab if your too lazy to use your frickin' feet, computer console, etc., etc. I was falling asleep doing bulk with an excavator, breaking boards loading trucks!! Great video tho Andreas.

A direct drive keeps a fella a bit busier alright, but at the end of the day there's still some fuel in the tank.

Not sure but it seems like a good mechanic could move that forward reverse shifter a little closer to your left hand.
@AndreasvonT
@AndreasvonT 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure either. the clutch is right by my left hand and the forward reverse is as close as it can get to my right. The placement of the levers is optimal in my opinion. thanks for your comment though
@Agislife1960
@Agislife1960 6 жыл бұрын
For some reason I thought you were using your left hand to shift directions, as I watch it again, Im mistaken. Is the clutch per say a small pedal you push with your foot, or does that just idle the engine down so you can change directions.

Hand clutch left hand, johnson bar (reverser) right hand decelarator right foot, run circles around a ps all day long, only you freeze to death in the canadian winter.

Young guys these days think there a good operator sitting in there A/C cabs all closed in from the weather eveverything on a joystick and toggle switch. Well throw them on a real machine they wouldn't have a clue what to do. I was operating a 1977 Cat 977 traxcavator for years. I love the older equipment you actually had to work at your job not listen to the radio or worry if your A/C worked
