I'm 100% on d100s, but I appreciate your passion for d6s!

D30 is a standard die. D24 is a funky one.

As a person who has created their own RPG system, I have always strongly preferred working with just d6s. In my games, I like to prioritize simplicity and, to a lesser extent, accessibility. Using a d6 strips rolling down to the bare essentials, eliminating the need for extensive number crunching (which I am not particularly a fan of) and allowing for more roleplaying opportunities when people aren't thinking about numbers. Also, unlike a d20, it is not unreasonable to assume that the average person has at least one d6 in their house somewhere, be it in a board game, in a junk drawer, anywhere. In a system that only uses d6s, that is a person that can jump right into learning without having to buy anything extra or using digital resources. I have always preferred rolling physical dice, the textile feeling and sounds have always been part of the TTRPG experience for me.

you wouldn't even start to believe just how much thought I put so far into d6's probabilities. You my friend are one of the very few that did scratch the surface of all that it encompasses. I did a JRPG style game, actually remade FF1 the first map with the encounters and damage calculations with fast paced combat and all of that with 3D6. And it was statistically pretty close to the NES game. (except maybe a little harder) My new game uses 3D6 with explosive concept (but not only on 6s) and can manage pretty much anything you through at it as a system. To hit and damage in a single roll, and yes it takes into account different weapon strength, but you don't really need to calculate anything complicated. I am pondering a game using a 6D6 scale where you sort the dice from lower to greater and your skill level is the dice # in order from the lowest one. This would be best for board game due to it's limited scalability. of course 2D6 could be rolled in order for 36 possibilities. But if you sort your dice in decreasing order you have 21 different results and it can wonderfully replace that D20 63 results for 3D6 and the said results are pretty linear, giving a lower probabilities for doubles only. And this is still just scratching the surface.

If you ever publish that FF “hack”, I’d love to see it! 🤘

@@HexedPress that would have to be a whole conversation. It took an evening to complete the first quest, one reason being first time players. I have the mechanics done but not the written instructions on how to play.

d6 are a fairly standard engine for my game. For example in determining level of events/place 1d6 ends up being local, 2d6 regional, 3d6 continental, and 4d6 cosmic. For example if I quickly need to know the level of the best swordsmith within a locality roll 1d6. Within a kingdom roll 2d6. within an empire 3d6. Can be modified by taking minimum and maximum values. A poor kingdom, 3d6 worst 2. A rich kingdom, 3d6 best 2. Ny reaction table uses 1d6 for innately hostile creatures, 2d6 for normal encounters, 3d6 for allies (yes, they might turn if ignored for a while) A big advantage is that they fit nicely within the d20 and d30 resolution. A 3d6 curve has 50% of the values within 50% of d20 roll. For a d30 roll the top 10% of the population has a 50% chance of success. [One of the reasons the old pre-Greyhawk +1 bonus to 2d6 OD&D resolution happened for attributes of 15+ (top 10^ of population) or -1 penalty for 6- (bottom 10%).

d6 is also really easy to acquire in bulk the 1-3/4-5/6 rarity idea is really cool way to tier a random table

The d6 is always an easy way to get people into a game. Everyone has d6s in their house.
