Oh, don't get me wrong. I LOVE love stories that end badly. It hurts so good. And Alistair breaks up with you if you make him king, aren't a human noble, and don't "harden" him after meeting Goldana. It's pretty heartbreaking. It's an honor thing. You obviously can't be queen if you're not nobility and even more so if you're not even human and even if you don't have him may Anora he knows he'll still be expected to marry and produce heirs. And an un-hardened Alistair is very focused on always doing "the right thing" so he just ends it because it wouldn't be fair to you or his future wife to keep you as a mistress. Then, of you don't make him do the dark ritual, he'll sacrifice himself to slay the Archdemon and you have no way to stop him. Because he's still in love with you. I wound up replaying 45 minutes of content just to go back and replace him in my party with Sten so that he wouldn't die. ^^;

One could argue that he would be more selfish in indulging himself and staying with Lavellan. He has a duty to the Elvhen. "My people... They still need me..." What is more important? Love or lives of all the Elves? (Of course everything that he wants to do is highly questionable and messed up)

At 6:10, I love how you can almost see his thought process dragging him back to reality. He pulls away, looks at her and realizes how deeply he had fallen in love, then that crippling fear of rejection comes crashing down on him because sooner or later she will find out who he is. He broke up with her to protect her. People constantly debate if Solas actually loved the Inquisitor, but those emotions expressed in that moment does not come from a man who faked it for their own agenda.

I watched a bunch of solaslavellen edits and, oh my god, more pain. - I am so glad that I romanced Alistair. But I'm glad that I didn't make him king, (dodged a bullet on my first full playthrough as a dalish warden, but I did keep alistair as a warden) Almost romanced Anders, but then couldn't because I was so tempted to go for Fenris and then Inquisition. Fuck, angsty breakup and damn was I upset. I mean I do love him a lot, but man I can't wait to punch Solas in my human mage playthrough. I'm romancing Cullen all the way for once as well.

just an interesting note i thought you might like but! when you travel to the fade there's a little graveyard with all the characters names and their biggest fears written on the stone. for solas, his biggest fear is "dying alone". i mean.. it's a but counterproductive. but i think it let's you interpret his speech in a more bittersweet way

+Claire Dé Lune I think it's maybe because Solas is such a complex character to understand. His early talks at Haven are kind of tricky. if the players handle it wrong, he makes a very harsh comment which makes the first impression of him turn down to zero for many people. (and with that ending... a lot of players don't have time to play this game more than once and don't care to try to understand him by looking up about him at all on the internet) And also his appearance at first glance was just too plain especially when compare to Cullen who had already got a lot of fanbase since DA:Origin. Whereas Solas, some people were just like noping out immediately when they saw his shinning bald head and his weird lupine long nose. (me too to be honest. :P i was interested in Cullen since DA:O and when i saw his appearance in DA:I trailer i swear i was going to romance the fuck out of him every playthrough!!! but after talking to Solas at Haven i was immediately trapped by his intelligent way of looking at the world and his rhythm kind of speech in that damn melodious maker voice.) and his face isn't that bad if you're really really looking at him. (this is just my opinion though :P)

I created my female elf lavellan (thank god I made her an elf) to romance with iron bull or Cullen because they seemed the most interesting before entering the game. But when he first appeared with Varric at the beginning, I was completely done. I knew for a fact that romancing him would be a soft kind of love that doesn't involve much touching because of the way he thinks and speaks (BUT THAT BOOTY GRAB THO) But yeah thanks to the DLC, I felt his romance path was more complete.

In ancient times he fought against the slavery and servitude that the other gods did that why he doesnt have a tattoo pattern. While he was on better terms with mythal it was mainly because she didnt randomly kill and abuse her followers like the others. So drinking from the well puts you in servitude of mythal which is exactly what he fights against and the reason he put up the veil and why he is doing what he is doing now

Because he knew the Inquisitor will be bound to his will. He always knew he will have to kill what's left of Mythal, and take her essence to go on with his plan - which is what happens at the epilogue. If the Inquisitor is at low approval he is like "How does it feel to have an acient elvhen god power flow through you? You will see how poorly this will end for you, fool.", but will high approval he is upset at the Inquisitor for doing it, and even more so for romanced one - "I begged you not to do it!" or "Why didn't you take me to the Temple of Mythal? I could have warned you!". Though there is a fact that apparently Mythal transfered something through the eluvial for Morrigan, perhaps unknowingly to Solas. And as such Inquisitor may be bound not to Solas, but to Morrigan. Either way it sucks.

During these last dialogues after the break up, he sounds so cold and indifferent, it's even more heartbreaking. Poor Lavellan. In the Temple of Mythal she learns more about how her culture is a lie, the elves at the temple don't accept her as one of her own. Then someone she starts loving takes her on a date, just to chicken out at the last moment, bring another painful subject about her culture and how it is a lie, and then, just when she thinks they are growing closer, he dumps her. But she has to lead, to focus on Corypheus, while her personal life shatters, she probably questions who she is with all the revelations about Dalish. Duty above feelings for both of them. Such a good story, but so heartbreaking, especialy when Solas distances himself.

But yes, they were very close, with the way their scene appears when he kills her with her consent seems they loved each other - it appears she was like a mother figure to him perhaps? A mentor? Cole's lines in Tresspaser suggest that Solas was a spirit of Wisdom before Mythal called him - "He didn't want a body, but she asked him to come". He also says that Solas' burned her vallaslin from his face, and this is why he has a scar on his forehead, his spell wasn't perfected yet.
