The rise and fall of DaBaby is wild….and self inflicted. In my opinion, he felt invincible after he didn’t get charged for that Walmart murder, and all of the other times he’s put hands on folks. He let those words fly at Rolling Loud and doubled down days after, effectively putting 2 nails in his career’s coffin. The new album and the music video both exude desperation, and it’s a telling sign of what’s to come

@@TheCompanyMan He killed another black male and got away with it because nobody cares about black lives. He made the mistake of attacking one of the most protected groups in society; the LGBTQIA Mafia. You can't say anything complimentary or derogatory about the Jewish community and you can't say anything derogatory about the LGBTQIA Mafia. But you can kill another black male and make a record bragging about it.

Controversy aside, I really feel like DaBaby has made the same mistake Fetty Wap made before him where he put out so many dope songs (that ultimately sound similar) in such a short time span that he oversaturated the market and now people are kinda burnt out.

That's possible. But on the other hand, listen to Baby on Baby and then go straight to listening to Baby on Baby 2. There is zero similarities between the two, except for the same, seemingly recycled beats. I'm a big fan of Dababy but this one I BARELY made it until the end. It's like he paid more attention to the visuals (which I LOVE! DON'T EVER STOP THAT) than the music. The album isn't fun, is what I'm trying to say. I went str8 back to Baby on Baby, Blank Blank & Kirk and was TURNT UP again Doh! #GetBackUpBaby! You got this! #BlankBlank #QueenCity #tha4 #704WeOutchea!!

No, he never created a strong solid hard-core fan base and he oversaturated rhe maeket with too many hits too quickly turning him into a trend artist. Its like he doesnt know when to stop. Hip hop is NOTORIOUSLY homophobic and misogynistic since its inception. Had Lil Wayne said the same things Da Baby said then dropped an album with no promo it'd go platinum in a week.

Another great breakdown Justin! We have seen great artists grow with their audiences (i.e. Scarface, Jay-Z, Nas, Kendrick) I think that when you exhibit a lack of maturity and an inability to grow, it increases the chances of your audience fading away. Also, was wondering if next time you could touch on the relationship between the members of Little Brother since Big Pooh just said the group is only two members now

THIS is the main reason why he flopped, NOT his distasteful antics. YB could've said and did everything DaBaby said and did and he STILL would've sold over 100k albums with the exact same amount of promo DaBaby got. DaBaby was dependent on the passive listener and the causal Top 40 Hip Hop/Pop fan and their preferences can change every couple of years making that an unsustainable way to maintain a career.

It’s not the fact he’s going out sad, he just doesn’t have developmental progress. He’s been one dimensional since his second album. He was declining before Rolling Loud. Let’s keep it real, he’s always been a street nigga. Always. Rolling Loud was just the straw that broke the camels back. And the fact that he didn’t do damage control sooner is what really hurt him. Lot of ink circles and underlines on the paper this week! DaBaby def had a strong start, but you are right he has stayed very comfortable in that turn-up vibe. I think he has more to offer, but I am unsure he has left himself room to do so at this junctor. As you pointed out he has potentially alienated more than 50% of the audience. Women and LGBTQ. While we have of course seen artists make amends and come back from such missteps in the past, I can't recall one ever doing it while continuing to ignore the root cause of the issue. He might be able to take some time, let the public sentiment soften, allow a few news cycles put space between him and his words, and then come back to new admiration, but it's unclear if he, or people in his camp are willing to go that route. And if you don't have the answer to those questions, I certainly do not.

One thing I think works against him is how many massive hits he has already. He’ll be able to tour in the future and lean on legacy streams and when people have that kind of security blanket, it’s easy to stay locked in the same perspective. Thanks for the analysis Dana.

His recent repetitive style doesn't sound like any of the first 100 flows a young MC would spit. With that being acknowledged, his recent music is not interesting to me and I am not fond of his content. His decrease is very sharp and odd to see. Dave Chappelle talked about this almost 20 years ago: "When 'keeping it real' goes wrong...". I'm a Carolina native as well and I was excited to have another artist from the area to make it (a lot of them don't break through from around here); but he wore down for me surprisingly quickly. I haye he steadily lessened his rise by making "not giving a fuck" the selling point of his brand, versus what made him popular. He looked at his career trajectory in a singular manner. Music is what keeps the fans entertained but that alone isn't why we gravitate to an artist. How he made his music and what he discussed in it is what brought us there. Instead of making all that the brand; he chose turn up as his primary music avenue and ignorant stances for controversy and attention. All publicity IS NOT good publicity.

@@TheCompanyMan He has the talent most definitely. It's all a matter of whether or not he's willing to humble himself enough to realize his flaws in his actions, as well as his missteps musically. The quote you pulled for the breakdown gave his game away. His music mentality in that interview is the case study on why French Montana can have platinum songs and also be completely irrelevant to Rap as a whole. Riding a wave with little variation will make you money if done well enough; but it doesn't breed longevity (EVEN if that's your own wave).

I do like DaBaby and I understand with him to say, he’s talking about people really no matter what your sexuality is being junkies and performing oral sex for dope. But the way it came out I think it came out really bad. That’s just something that he probably should not have said because when you make a comment that needs to be explained in that kind of detail it’s better just to not see the comment because it can be taken as offensive. I’ve seen a lot of people saying that there’s a conspiracy against him from the music industry like “ the man” is behind the scenes pushing buttons and pulling levers to make sure he doesn’t make it now. Look I’m not saying there aren’t real conspiracies out in the world but we live in a day where anytime something happens that people don’t like it’s written off as a conspiracy and it’s getting a bit old. The problem with making everything a conspiracy is that it’s easier for the real conspiracies to hide. Let’s say there’s one real conspiracy out there but so many people are tired of getting told that everything that happens is a conspiracy that they just don’t believe it anymore. I think what happened to DaBaby is a mix of two things. The first thing is probably the most obvious that there are a lot of people that have said they’re not fucking with him anymore because of his statement. I think the other thing is it’s his fourth album. His fourth main stream album. Hip-hop has never really been very kind to artists that are no longer new artist but now I think it’s worse than ever. You look at everything that went down with DJ Akademiks that’s kind of it on a bigger picture. Hip-hop doesn’t respect it’s history it used to be we didn’t respect what happened 15 years ago, then 10 years ago, now if you’ve been out for five years you’re “old and wack”. I love Kendrick Lamar’s last album, I don’t think it’s as good as the first three but I still think it’s brilliant work but it’s not being held up by the world as his other albums were. Kendricks a veteran now. I think DaBaby on top of dealing with his comments is also dealing with just not being the brand new shiny toy that everyone likes anymore.

I may be bias since I'm a gay man myself, but yeah, these days you gotta have women and gays on your side or at least leave them alone and be neutral, women as a whole are the holders of money around the world and make the majority of all purchases so just from that alone means most businesses should cater to women simply out of having more chances for profit. Together with the fact women dominate pop music, which most rappers use as a bridge to have more listeners and expand their market, female artists are more out going with experimenting with genres as well from my personal opinion, whenever i think of alternative or experimental music i think of many female or women identified artists, gay male artist's...and that's it, there's pronaly a lot of cishet male experimental or alternative artists out there, but the most influential and even the ones who get on charts are women(Bjork, Kate Bush, Fionna Apple) and the ones who leave impressions on the industry as well. Kanye himself had one of his albums mostly produced by a Venezuelan Transgender music producer Arca, so a lot of rappers are taking inspo from LGBT people by proxy. Ain't no one more interested in music, in revolutionizing and changing what can't or be made then the gays and women if you ask me. So mistreating any of them is career suicide unless you are extremely niche.

Awesome analysis. You absolutely nailed it. It’s crazy to think you can be a pop star without women and the lgbtq community. Thank you for the perspective.

It's frustrating being a Dababy fan. He has made music that I undeniably love, but it feels like music from an argumentative kid bully right now, and I feel silly waiting for the maturation of an artist named Dababy.

"when you got something going you would be a fool to step on your own toes and to left with it" isn't that what he did with Meg tho.... Both of them were gold together and him linking with Tory completely ruined that bag.

Exactly. He went left in a different way. He kept making the same songs afraid of going left, but instead went left on his lgbtq fans and women audience. That’s the irony of all of this.

Dababy's fall needs to be studied. I was telling my groupchat that had he not turned the women against him he'd have been fine over time. Everytime he got in trouble or involved with some BS they continued supporting him to platinum albums. They largely didn't mind his style being so simple and overused. He made fun music. It's funny to me that his audience is the exact same as Meg's and he ran them all away for absolutely no reason. Could have gotten at least 4-5 more years at the top.

He had a pretty funny Nardwuar interview. Nard kept pronouncing his name like "DAH Baybee" and at the end he started dressing up Nardwuar and posing with him while Nardwuar was doing his post-interview freeze frame. 9:27 Also, is the KZbin demonetization algorithm so bad that you even have to censor the word "damn"? Personally I think people saying Dababy isnt "popping" while still talking about him is a bit weird. I think the real conversation is did Da Baby lose to Lil Baby? I think all the things he did could be forgotten with a huge hit BUT did Lil Baby put him to sleep.

The only person I can think of that was a big star with not so much support from LGBTQ+ community and women was Eminem after the Marshal Mathers LP. Wonder why he was able to stay a big star after all of that? Was is the Elton John performance at the Grammys? Is that what DaBaby needs to do to save him? Or was it for another reason? 🧐

I feel the same way being from the Carolina’s. He was doing too much after a while. He doesn’t grow from situations. Not appreciative to the people around him. I think Dani and Him messed up the work and real relationship. He threw Megan down the toilet for a wack feature from Tory. Dissed his gay fan base without knowing. He needs to mature and be accountable for His sake no funny shit. Too much controversy and people can’t take you serious. You’re unpredictable meaning….

Ok. So you gotta milk the game? Music distribution has changed drastically over the past 10 years, even more so around start of pandemic timeline. Yes, J. Cole didn't change his image or style over night. But there was an obvious level up with each released albums. Which is vital to growing and staying connected with your fan base/audience. DaBaby musical evolution is happening too slow to result in legendary status. Luckily he has been fortunate enough to capitalize on his successful albums he quickly and consecutively released in the past. Hopefully he is saving and investing his earnings wisely
@TheCompanyMan

He did a great job milking the game. He did a terrible job of the last part of his quote... "Go left with it." He went left on all his audiences (women, LGBTQ, and fans who liked the diversity of rap styles he used to show) Which was unfortunate to see.
