Please push Subscribe. B767-300ER landing at Troll airfield in Antarctica in January 2022. Icelandic pilots and crew operated this flight and landed on the icy runway with scientists. I got these clips from the pilots and mechanic and did the editing for them. This is pretty cool and the crew was fortunate to do this trip from Cape Town in South Africa.

This aircraft, FI-ISN, once visited Stockholm Arlanda Airport in 2019 and I was part of the team handling it. I walked under this aircraft and stuff, very cool to see it in Antarctica

Runway overrun continues for ...200 miles of more ice. Great video and ground prep! When I was in the USAF, a C-141 Starlifter (4 jet engines) at McMurdo Station in 1974. First time a heavy cargo jet did this and it set a ground taxiing record for continuous taxiing (miles) until they were sure that the ice pack was good to shut down. It was part of Operation Deep Freeze. The 141 was the predecessor to the USAF C-17.

I worked for Boeing for nearly 39 years before I retired 6 years ago this month. SO MANY GOOD MEMORIES!!!!. I was there for the 757/767 buildup, the overtime money we earned then helped us save enough for the down payment on the house I still live in today. I am a tool & die maker and there were so many challenges then. Many of the drawings were still done on drafting tables and retrieving drawings had to come from the microfiche files. It seemed like an endless firefight to keep up with the changes but, those 2 birds eventually were in the air, where they were designed to be! I REALLY do miss being in the shop building aircraft tooling, but, retirement offers it's options and I have my primitive wood shop to keep me occupied now. As the old saying is, "If it's not Boeing, I'm not going"! I will not hesitate to fly on any aircraft we built, then or now.

An Aztec on steroids. A flying Dodge Power Wagon. The 67 is a joy to fly. Big, comfortable, and very very capable. You take off at Max Gross Weight with 7 hours of fuel and it still goes uphill like mad. Stuff can break en route and you're still good to go. It's a beast. I think that landing it here was probably easier than at many of the airfields where it typically operates. Now, keeping it nice, dispatchable, and warm till you can get it back out of there is another story. Now here's an interesting tidbit....I was told that this was a McDonnel Douglas product and Boeing got it during their shotgun marriage. It was originally going to be a MCD tri-jet, the replacement for the DC-10. For instance, the Center Hyd System is THE BIG one. Why put the large system in the middle when there's no third engine? So Boeing had to put on huge Air-Demand HYD pumps on the center system. The main cabin door is a Douglas door, it retracts inward and upward, not a plug and swing like the Boeing. I forget all the other touches but there are a ton of them that point at Douglas. Differences training (from the 57) was a four-day class. BA got the plane on paper and just kept going with it, shoving the 57 cockpit and systems integration into it. They wanted to make it a single Type (with the 57) because they could see the genius of the Airbus model.

Even at uncontrolled fields they'd still call their position in the pattern, just good habits that you don't really loose, and to give updates to the ground crew. On another note, that snow runway is nuts, way above the burning oil barrels or tree branches we see in the North sometimes!

I've never landed on snow. I'd imagine that the depth perception would be hard to figure out. What a smooth landing. Reverse thrusters applied before the nose wheel touched down! Great video and can't wait to see what lucaas does with it!

TR's are typically opened as soon as the mains are on the runway. And then when the nose gear hits you can honk on them. They take a few seconds to fully deploy and during this time you lower the nose.

@@shrimpflea if you mean the ANZ crash in the 70’s, that didn’t have anything to do with the aircraft type. That was an incorrectly programmed navigation system. DC-10 was actually perfect for landing in Antártica because of the three engines.

Awesome video! For those who didn't know, Troll is the Norwegian Antarctic research station. Good to see Icelandair on the South Pole again. Nobody knows snow and icing conditions like Icelandair.

@@Rich72James Not really, but the 767 is a very reliable and proven model. And it has the range and payload capacity needed. There might have been some large cargo items in the belly of the plane requiring a certain size of aircraft.

The 767 was the first wide body I ever flew on, it was surprisingly quick on the climb like it's thinner 757 sister but very comfortable. Great aircraft.

That is the funny thing about snow: if you just have _enough_ of it, and it is _cold_ enough, it actually has quite good traction.

How do you check your balanced runway take-off data on snow ? Do you have friction coefficient to apply or you just guess it as a whole ?

Norwegians who handle the runway did check the braking coefficient before the landing and it was given at 40mu. That is braking action medium to good. They compact the snow 3cm on top of the blue ice, just like they do in the ski slopes.

The first time I flew with Iceland Air was around '79. We had arrived in Chicago and hustled across O'Hare with a one hour connection time. As it turned out, our aircraft had some issues and wouldn't be leaving until the next day. It was an old DC8 Stretched. It was this impossibly long tube with a set of wings amidships. I'd done a fair amount of traveling having lived in the Alaskan Bush for a half dozen years. So, we're seated in the back, the airplane taxi's to the end of the runway and pivots around into the wind. The pilot winds up the four engines, releases the brake, and move accurate forward.....albeit somewhat slowly. A dog outside the fence out accelerates us. Finally the plane starts to gather speed, we rotate......and the wheels continue to have contact with the concrete........Finally the pilot in an act of desperation to get airborne retracts the gear, the plane settles back toward the runway.....more flaps....slowly we lift...probably some weird ground effects saved us. The pilot tickled us skyward.....slowly....so as not to disturb the sky gods. He held an altitude.....as the fuel burned, we lifted higher, we were able to clear Greenland for a stunning close up view of her glaciers. Finally the pilot put down the gear, and if by magic, we had landed in Keflavik.

Amazing, the pilots and the crews have lots of experiences in landing and taking off from the snowstorm. And they are so good with the runway so hard to see.

Though you don't typically land on snow covered runways in regular commercial operations ;)

@@rkan2 the answer is YES, very high risks, but in those countries during the winter may be hard to avoid, the main thing is to make sure the runway is cleared like we saw in the video. I used to landed or took off in Denver's airport having similar conditions as we see in the video.

@@rkan2 FYI, most of the brakes systems are tested to land in the snowy conditions and have computer control assists.

@@mutualview3038 Ehh... No paved runway is graded with few centimeters of snow on the runway :D They are cleared as best as possible. For some unpaved Alaskan runways it might be true.

@@rkan2 You absolutely do. I live in the city of Tromsø, Norway and during most of the winter the strip is covered in snow/ice, and a typical day has like 60 takeoffs and landings.

@@bmstyle great plane but can’t compare to either of those. There’s nothing comparable to the 757 in terms of MTOW, thrust to weight ratio and it’s the only narrow body that can do Munich-JFK (as an example)

@@bmstyle the 777 is a great aircraft and the 767 too but the 757 can fly non stop from a 6500ft runway on Kauai to Denver with a full load or land on 5400feet in Orange County or on a 6400 foot runway at 6500msl in Jackson Wy. 757 truely a great aircraft. Proud of my almost 30 years flying it off and on.

@@islandcactus1508 It always seemed the 757 came off the runway and climbed faster than any jet I've been on. The 727 felt like it would never get off the ground.
