For those that don’t know, this was filmed in 2010 and aired in 2011. The son is doing better. The CMO of NASCAR who was undercover in the episode is now the President of NASCAR.

Ive never had leukemia but a childhood friend of mine sadly passed away from it when we were about 13 its been 11 years and i still remember that in order to pay for some of his medical bills his parents were working 2 jobs so he had to stay with his grandma all week exept when 1 of his parents had a day off

I was diagnosed the summer after high school, so it also could be that everyone’s a bit more mature in general. It may be worth asking your acquaintance to call the hospital and asking them to forgive part of the costs due to no insurance. We also had a family friend who didn’t have insurance but had a high hospital bill due to a heart condition. They called and the hospital took off about 1/2 of the costs. I hope your acquaintance is doing well now.😊
