I miss it gave me hope for the genre to get some love outside of Smash and the indie scene, and that it wasn't trying to be Melee

This is such terrible news. I can't believe that Dabuz is a league player.

The truth is that the game was fun but it had many problems that ended in this bad ending. It had great potential that, due to the bad decisions of Warner Bros., all that potential never be. Oh and before I forget, for those who said I was going to be the Smash Killer, buy your clown wigs and go tell another bad joke with the Nick Brawl 1 and 2 players that their games is going to be revived

It always felt like the devs didn't know what they wanted from the game (other than money)

Honestly really is a shame, absolutely loved getting to work w PFG during the beta and played the game a ton, but the magic was def lost over time, really sad to see it go away... again, which hurts even more

I hope modders open this game up once it goes offline and do a Project M / Marvel vs Capcom Infinite and Beyond type of deal.

You couldn't play as the characters. Full stop, that alone would have been enough to kill the game. The starting roster was like 3 fighters unless you paid money. That's never going to work, that is not how f2p works at all. The difference between being able to play a bunch of characters but reeeaally wanting that new one that dropped, versus logging in and the entire roster except a small handful are locked, is night and day. But yeah shutting down the game for a year was probably what did it, all told. No idea what they were thinking with that one. I think PFG likely did a very reasonable job developing the game, but WB has a habit of taking the saying "kill your darlings" a bit too literally.

The biggest reason was we weren't able to play any characters

Doubles focus is a big failure point. Most people playing fighting games want to play 1v1, the focus on doubles made the game fail.

I played at the launch window I liked it because it was slow like smash 4 lol. I unlocked Jason and Agent Smith grinded projectile kills with Agent Smith got the platinum but I didn't bother playing ranked since it launched in season 2. I didn't even know they added shields

The biggest issue by far was WB forcing PFG to rerelease the game with half of the beta features just missing. The game clearly needed a few more months of development to build in the remaining features and make gameplay improvements, but WB shot themselves in the foot again a second time and the game massively suffered as a result. I won’t lie when I say I think MVS is significantly more interesting than Smash and a lot of the character movesets are fairly well designed (albeit unbalanced for a handful). My only hope would be that we could eventually see a similar game done right under better management. And as a side note, I hope someone else finally gets the balls to try and design another Iron Giant for their game because as much of a nightmare he was to develop and balance, he was a lot of fun and what Ridley in Smash should’ve been
