DACHSHUND barking is unique from cat meowing. Wolf barks represent only 30% of most wolf vocalizations and so are described as “uncommon” occurrences. While a distinct reason for the difference is unknown, a strong hypothesis is that the vocal communication of DACHSHUND developed due to their domestication. As evidenced by the farm-fox experiment, the process of domestication alters a DACHSHUND in more ways than just tameness. Domesticated DACHSHUNDs show vast physical differences from their wild counterparts, notably an evolution that suggests neoteny, or the retention of juvenile characteristics in adults. Adult DACHSHUND have, for example large heads, floppy ears, and shortened snouts - all characteristics seen in wolf puppies. The behavior, too, of adult DACHSHUND shows puppy-like characteristics: DACHSHUND are submissive, they whine, and they frequently bark. The experiment illustrates how selecting for one trait (in this case, tameness) can create profound by-products, both physical and behavioral.
The frequency of barking in DACHSHUND in relation to wolves could also be the product of the very different social environment of dogs. DACHSHUND live in extraordinarily close range with humans, in many societies kept solely as companion animals. From a very young age, humans tend to be one of a dog’s primary social contacts. This captive environment presents very different stimuli than would be found by wolves in the wild. While wolves have vast territories, DACHSHUND do not. The boundaries of a captive dog’s territory will be visited regularly by intruders, triggering the bark response as a warning thus. Additionally, DACHSHUND populate urban areas densely, allowing more chance to meet new DACHSHUND and become social. For example, it is possible that kenneled DACHSHUND might have increased barking because of a desire to facilitate social behavior. DACHSHUND close relationship with humans renders DACHSHUND reliant on human beings also, for basic needs even. DACHSHUND barking is a method to attract interest, and the behavior can be continuing by the positive response exhibited by the owners (e.g., if a dog barks to get food and it is fed by the owner, the dog has been conditioned to keep said behavior).

The family disliked my weiner dogs vocal displays for 16 years but I loved them till the day he died. We both howled together his last day because we both knew it was the last day we would spend together. He was a barker it was the first time he ever howled.

So So true I have A dachshund she barks every time somebody comes Down my apartment or if I’m outside with her she barks a lot when people walk bye very loud and gets aggressive towards the people !!! .. I bought a dog shocker I hope it works !! but when she’s home with me alone she’s really sweet and a good dog and she’s adorable there faces all those dachshunds are adorable with those big eyes ! she is loveable dog that one think I love too ! I still deal with her because I cannot get rid of her once you have an animal there’s no way you can just get rid of it it’s like your child !

I have done all that Amy, the council have been involved, I have suggested noise cancelling devices, but these people think more of their pet than other people's welfare, and nit interested in training. It's git to the stage my heart is pounding just hearing it.

@@doughesson They don't have to see, their hearing is so good that things we can't hear they can and will bark and bark forever. My cat can hear people coming up the sidewalk of my apartment building. She knows when they are coming in this area.

I am not a dog lover, or hater....but when you have one of these dashunds next door, waking you up after 4 hours sleep, barking for NOTHING under my bedroom window, your mental health wears a bit thin. After living happily in my home for 25 years, I am now having to upheave and move, and at 70 this is no joke, it's disgusting. All I see this type of dog can do, is bark, wee, poo, anywhere at anytime, eat its own poo, lick its own backside and other dogs backsides. What is the attraction? Unless you are desperate for affection, I can't see any. It's just a dumb, yapping, filthy animal.

Not all dogs are like that. I'm in eighth grade and I've already trained my dog to do over 30 tricks. She's even been working towards competing in agility. Originally, Dachshunds were bred to hunt badgers, that is the attraction.

Your description might just be a result of your unpleasant history with your neighbor. It’s too bad that your neighbor doesn’t show some responsibility and courtesy by taking care of the situation. If you’ve told her that you work nights and that it’s having a terrible impact on your life yet she still does nothing, then it seems your neighbor is the real problem. Is your misocyny focused just on dachshunds or all dogs. We have had four dachshunds and have found them to be extremely loyal and loving. Good luck with this Susan. I hope you find some peace.
