Even though dachshunds are a hound breed and not a watchdog breed, they do love to bark. This poses the logical question of training a dachshund not to bark quickly and easily. Dachshund barking can feel almost impossibly loud at times, considering how small their bodies are. It’s almost as if their elongated torso is amplifying the sound of the barking.

by far easier and worked for me. Dogs HATE to be all alone. When my dog barked I put her in the guest toilette and closed the door for maybe 3 minutes. Really- only 2-3 minutes and without saying anything. When I let her out the barking was over. It works! After a while she just knew that barking was not appreciated.

Yes! I saw that on an old Caesar Milan video; that’s great! My little Chiweenie doesn’t bark much at all, except when her sister who is a Chihuahua/Terrier mix starts. When she starts my Chiweenie will follow suit, but will stop when I tell her to. The Chi mix won’t so I am going to try. Thanks!

My dog is a pomchi. Both breeds like to bark and think they are great danes so she has a double whammy in her genes. Her bark is ear piercing As I live in a situation where barking is not permitted by neighbours, I had to teach her early that it was not the done thing. She has her normal bed for sleeping and she has her *safe place* which is her metal crate that she was toilet trained in. When she is in there she knows that I will not touch her. She can come and go as she wants. But if I close the door of it, she *is restricted* . It is in another room away from the living area. When she was a puppy, I would put her in if she barked. Close the door and leave her alone for a short period. When she calmed down I would open the door but leave it up to her when she came out. If she barks now, I just point and she goes and gets in it herself. I don’t need to lock her in anymore, she just calms down and then comes out. It is sort if like the *naughty step* But she really only barks at the things that are very quiet, not noisy like the postman or the garbage truck. The little noises seem to indicate to her that someone is creeping about and needs to be warned to go away. I have a bread making machine. It is virtually silent but makes a slight clicking sound as it goes through the cycles. Those clicking sounds startle her. Not the louder mixing sounds. So I set it going, held her near it and waited for the clicking sound. When she saw where the noise was coming from she seemed to be happy and knew it was nothing to worry about. Now she doesn’t notice at all. Same with fire works…I showed her the lights in the sky and now she knows it is nothing that will hurt her. The only thing I cannot seem to convince her is harmless is my neighbours car. She can hear it coming before it even arrives in the street. No other cars bother her just that one. A noisy old clunker?? not at all…a small modern car that I cannot hear at all. Go figure. Their hearing is much better than ours and maybe there is a high pitched whine I cannot hear. She is also not bothered by other dogs barking or on the TV. The washing machine, dishwasher, dryer vacuum cleaner etc. do not bother her either. They are loud, so not a danger, in her mind.

This works if the dog understands that they are actually being punished for barking. It might not be so obvious to them. If the dog barks at strangers and you apply this method, they might connect the "inprisonment" to when strangers come to visit. This may make them even more hostile to strangers, because that means he may be put in the can. Encouraging positive behaviour is always better, but of course in some cases you must correct and restrain your dog. A feeble dog owner who don't know what to do is a pathetic thing, and the dog understands this and will lose respect for your authority. I had a dachshund that barked a lot when people came in our home (appartement). We started taking the dog with us and meeting and greeting visitors out on the street, and this completely solved the problem. He would never bark at people outside, and wouldn't have any problems with them if we entered the house together.

@@JH-lo9ut barking at strangers who enter the house is a different and specific situation and should be met by having the dog meet people in a friendly manner all the time. In a way it is like socialisation. Puppies also have to learn that other dogs are not enemies.

I don’t find Doxies a breed that have excessive barking, especially in comparison with others like Chihuahuas. As a matter of fact we have recently been to two amateur Weiner race competitions; we were absolutely shocked at how quiet it was considering there were 100’s of these precious babies. Also barking is their way of communicating; obviously yes, it can be annoying but as you say, yelling at them doesn’t help & it’s really unfair to reprimand them for doing something that is natural. Luckily my Doxie is so well behaved, if only my Chi would learn! Thank you for sharing for those who need the help!

I adopted an adult chihuahua mix, 14 lbs, from a rescue. One reason was because he didn't bark much and I'm in an apartment and he needed a quiet, one person home since he'd be in 2 homes and neglected/abused and at the rescue 2 times . He is working out with a lot of patience for his adjustment to a non abusive life and after 2 months he 's not barking hardly at all.

Thanks for video, very interesting. I do disagree with certain aspects in #1. I've been successful using the '4-bark' technique, in allowing a few barks (while you assess the cause) before interrupting/breaking the dog's focus. If it's an actual threat, of course the response is different & you're quickly going to identify the bark as something other than another dog walking past. I've found that a few gentle taps on the head will 'reset' the focus, and THEN lots of positive reinforcement :)

Our little mini dach, Isabella (Izzy for short), was one of a kind. She loved little children, and she loved all kinds of animals. If an animal was aggressive, defensive, or unfriendly, Izzy would lie on her back and invite them to her. She persisted until she made a friend. I believe she would have befriended a mouse. As a very small puppy, she loved chasing squirrels in our yard. I watched squirrels sometimes crawl down a tree, staying just above Izzy's reach, and when they saw her become distracted, the squirrels would take off to another tree with Izzy right behind them Izzy was very fast but not the fasted dachshund we have owned. She couldn't catch the speedy squirrels. She sometimes barked at the squirrels but rarely barked afterward. She had to be exhausted all of the time. So exercise works. We lost Isabella at age 19 years. It was a huge loss for such a little 8 lb dog. To show that we know dachshunds, we are a dachshund family. When we get together, it's a gathering of the dachshunds, too. Each has their own personality just like we are all different.

My dachshund is protective of me and will get between the person and me and bark at them until I hug them or get next to them, then she'll stop. She also has different barks I am starting to recognize: loud for the black cat that sits in front of her window, only one bark for UPS or Prime vehicle. High pitch bark for my daughters and no barking at my mother.

Not true, you may be insensitive to the noise (maybe you raised human children)... But it is just as annoying as a screaming kid in the grocery store and I happen to very much enjoy our quite home. Sharing it with a (any) dog should not be a hot mess and bedlam, so they can be in their "natural' state.🐕 Or Maybe you gave up and let them have their way. Me I am pretty secure in the knowledge: I like dogs and quite and can have both.🐶
