This song came on while i was on the county bus with about 50+ other guys on our way to Miami Dade County court to hear a judge decide our future. Complete silence, early morning bus ride, before the break of dawn, dark, no sun. Just a glimpse of street lights and headlights bypassing. I felt like i could feel everyones hearts on the bus inside my chest. Felt like I could feel everybodys pain. IT WAS HEAVY! Hard to fathom, young kid next to me 18, looking at up to 30 years just from hanging around the wrong people. Was articulate, soft spoken, and made a bad decision 1 day out of his life 💔 Wish him well and everyone else who has made mistakes and are in need of guidance.

"Black Diamonds and Pearls" is clearly a stand in for black men and women. Diamonds being "hard" and angular (masculine), and Pearl's being coveted and curved (feminine). NAS ALWAYS DROPS GEMS IN HIS MUSIC.

I played this song as a presentation in my creative literature class during my senior year of high school in 2008. My class was completely white except for me and you can hear a pin drop because of how silent it was. Unbeknownst to me no one has ever heard of this song including my teacher. I then explained what the song meant to me and asked a few of my classmates what they thought about the song and I was truly shocked to their response. They noticed that some of the things he wished for if he ruled the world were an everyday thing for them and some of the struggles he was facing seemed so foreign to them. I got a new perspective of the song from them so I also learned something new.. amazing song and amazing reaction guys.. Much love from Minnesota.

What??? Nobody knew this song on 2008? I am a white girl from KY and graduated in 2004 and I don’t know one kid in my school that didn’t know this song. We had 1.5 black people in our entire school. Crazy how some music makes it way to, and impacts, some people and communities, and others haven’t even heard it. Blows my mind!!!

"Biggie's Ready to Die album came out several months after Illmatic, and Biggie was crowned king of New York in the popular culture of Hip Hop heads, Ready to Die unfairly over-shadowed Illmatic, which is truly a classic album. Though they were quite distinct artists, they innovated in analogous ways. Biggie merged language that was high and low, vernacular and vocabulary words, in a way that sounded natural. He did this with a sophisticated understanding of the patterns of black language. When a different or unusual word or phrase could be introduced while still maintaining the aesthetics of black language, he inserted it. NaS, in contrast, merged concepts that were high and low, vernacular and metaphysical, in a manner that was whole rather than pieced together, thus presenting a complex that is unusual in any music outside of jazz. What Biggie started to do with language in 1994, NaS had already begun to do with ideas on Illmatic. He carries us through the "Righteous steps" of the cosmic, oceanic, and literal dimensions of his person. He transcends." - Imany Perry (Born To Use Mics)

when the hook says,I'll free all my sons. They are talking about the bondage that we as a people are under. Black diamonds and pearls are black men and women. If you could be mine we both shine refers to the black relationship between male and female Coming together and shining In an environment to peacefully raise our children. It can be debated what The meaning of walking to the sun hand-in-hand means. Some says the physical sun, And others say it is the Son of the Most High Yahshua. Love your videos Keep up the good work

I also loved the reference to "black diamonds and pearls" and that you guys picked up that he was giving value to black people using something normally reserved for the idea of "white purity" or perfection. So awesome to watch your dad just get completely lost in that mesmerizing baseline incredibly layered with Symbiotic melodies that Nas rides so smoothly smoothe. Classic song, great reaction. My suggestions for more ABSOLUTE MUST LISTENS Nas - The Message Nas - Rule ft Amerie Nas - What goes around Akon - Ghetto Akon - Once in a while Akon - Lonely Mobb Deep - Shook One's pt 2 Mobb Deep - Quiet Storm Do not sleep on any of the above, I promise you'll both love them. @frontroom Thank you for referencing Kurtis Blow! I searched the comments to see if anyone mentioned the historical connections this song has. The chorus is a cover of Kurtis Blow's "If I Ruled the World". Kurtis Blow is considered to be the first commercially successful rapper paving the way for many others to follow. Also, Blow is the first rapper to be signed to a major record label. The song also samples the song "Friends" by rap group Whodini. Lauren HIll also covers a Delphonics' song, with the "walk right up to the sun hand in hand" line.

I recall seeing Lauryn Hill at the Apollo. Unfortunately, she was not able to be at her best and the crowd was not nice about it that day. Keeping in the spirit of groundbreaking hip-hop albums, at some point maybe try an album reaction of DJ Shadow - Endtroducing.. , (it's a cohesive album where it all flows together so an album reaction would suit it I figure) or, if you fancy a single song from it, try Midnight In A Perfect World. Like Illmatic it has a strong legacy and huge impact in hip-hop, instrumental hip-hop in particular, first album created from all samples, consistently appears in top albums of all time lists for all genres, not just hip-hop, also a good introduction to show that hip-hop itself has various subcultures, instrumental hiphop etc

Lauren’s “we’ll walk right up to the sun” lyrics come from a classic R & B group named The Delfonics out of Philly. Lauren Hill has used snippets of there songs for hooks in many songs including “Ready Or Not” from the score album. This song is great but when Nas dropped the “It Was Written Album” many of his fans thought it never measured up to illmatic. In fact, that’s one thing that Nas has to dealt with throughout his career…trying to measure up to illmatic which was a game changer and perfect album if there ever was one? It Was Written, is now more respected and considered ahead of it’s time however. Great reaction. Keep up the great vids. Peace ✌🏼

I was a teen who was immersed in the culture when illmatic dropped and remember everyone including myself saying things like “this is the realist shit I’ve ever heard” and “Nas just flipped the whole rap genre.” If you listen to rap post Nas you’ll hear the influence. Fat Joe said he had to change his whole style up after illmatic. When Nas was ready to drop “It Was Written” in 96 it was probably the most highly anticipated rap album ever. I loved it but thought some of the production was too polished and his lyrics leaned a bit far into mafioso Don type rap that was becoming trendy with Biggie and others rap giants. As a Philly native I was also anticipating The Roots second major album which dropped I think within days of “It Was Written” and was hooked. “illadelph Half-life” is an incredible album. I think that you should definitely listen and consider reviewing it with pops. Again, great review. I love how you connect the themes from past albums and how your dad appreciates the lyrics. If he keeps it up he’ll begin to understand and really hear the different qualities regarding rhyme patterns and flow style. ✍🏼
