Dad and daughter cross the Simpson Desert in an FJ Cruiser

Between us and Uluru lay the Simpson Desert - the largest parallel dune desert in the world.
The eastern faces of the dunes are steeper than the west due to the prevailing winds, making an east/west crossing a little more difficult. At the top of each dune on the WAA line the track had twists and turns that were not seen until you were on top of the dune which made for sometimes lock to lock driving. We planned to take four days but did the crossing in three. I was having too much fun driving to stop :)

It's funny how it's the daughters that seem to take more of an interest in 4X4ing than sons. My 9 year old daughter loves coming along with me. We've done the Simpson, Googs track, The Flinders and Bendelby Ranges together. I even taught her how to drive my Pajero just in case I'm unable to drive. My 18 year old son wouldn't even know how to roll out a swag and has no interest to learn. Good on ya Gary and daughter.

Loved it :) we had a FJ but sold it to get more room for traveling with our baby Daughter . We now have a Prado 150 V6 auto Kakadu . Hope to this with my daughter in the future :)

I’m not sure how much I used 🤔 I have 190lts on board which was more than plenty where I was able to drive from Birdsville to Kulgera (230km past Mt Dare) without refuelling 👍

Awesome vid. I've got nearly an identical rig to yours. The TJM snorkel and bar, yellow spray and roof racks. How much fuel did you use and it looks like youve got an aux tank?? Im doing it this year for the first time and concerned about fuel consumption.

Hey Sam, Maybe its you that people are seeing when they say that they are seeing me :) I have a 120lt Long Ranger aux tank and was able to go from Birdsville to Kulgera with fuel to spare. Best to budget for 20lt/100km so your standard fuel tank only wouldn't make it. Good luck on your trip - the FJ is such good fun driving in the desert and we didn't even come close to getting bogged. Only 2 dunes we didn't make it up the first time. Cheers, Gaz

Gary Tischer Hi Gary, Enjoyed your vid. We are going to do the WAA line in May/June this year. Approx how much fuel did you use? We have a Prado 120 series with 180 liter diesel tank, would that be enough to get to from Birdsville to Kulgera? Not towing anything just tenting it.

blueycarlton hey Blue, you should have no problem with 180lt of diesel - I had 190lt of petrol and easily made Birdsville to Kulgera.

Hi Gary have watched the video several times love it. My wife are doing it this year in a FJ Did you carry a spare spare? If not what are your thoughts on tyres pressures etc ?

sorry I haven't got back to you earlier. I took a solid tyre kit to repair any punctures but didn't get any. Pressures were around the 20psi. Hope your trip went well.

Had 190lts in two tanks. Filled up in Birdsville and didn't take any fuel on until Kulgera.

I appreciate it's a tricky question to answer, but how much fuel do you imagine you had left in the tank when reaching Kulgera? I'm trying to estimate if the factory 159L would be enough for a west-east crossing between mt.dare and birdsville. Thanks in advance.

Mt Dare to Kulgera is about 250km - that would have taken over 30 lt and I had 190lt on board. If you have full tanks when you leave Mt Dare you should be ok depending on how you drive - taking one jerry wouldn't hurt to be sure :)
