Dad builds robotic exoskeleton to help son walk - BBC News

French dad and robotics engineer Jean-Louis Constanza has built a robotic suit for his 16-year-old son Oscar that allows him to walk.
Oscar, a wheelchair user, activates the suit by saying "Robot, stand up" and it then walks for him.
Jean-Louis co-founded the company that builds the suit, which can allow users to move upright for a few hours a day.
It is used in several hospitals, but it isn't yet available for everyday use by individuals and has a price tag of around €150,000 (about £127,700).
A personal exoskeleton would need to be much lighter, the company's engineers said.

His devotion to his son is admirable, but no greater than many other fathers. It's denigrating, to most fathers, to make it seem as though Jean-Louis is somehow more pronounced in his devotion. Or, did you miss the part where he has a company? He's an engineer? Most fathers don't have those luxuries. Is Jean-Louis' devotion greater than the poor father from a small village, who walks twenty miles a day, to provide an education for his children? This small village parent (based on an actual example I read about) will NEVER build an exoskeleton for his children, but his devotion is just as great. As for improving the lives of others, well I'm sorry if you are devoid of concern for other people, and don't contribute to the welfare of society, but most people do. You don't need to build exoskeletons to build a better world. Hell, all you really have to do is, be a good person. Just a smile makes the world that much better. Such machines could help extremely weak people train up muscles and balance. This is the most exciting part of this according to me. It could help so many people learn to walk better or even again. A lot of old people lack the tools needed to learn to train their ability to walk. You have devices like the rollator that helps people walk. The issue is that it tends to diminish peoples ability to keep balance with time as well as certain muscles. Imagine being able to help people with spine injuries being able to walk again :).

Walking is inferior to rolling, less stable, slower, more unreliable. Ive designed a wheelchair that can simply bathe, clothe and pick thing up for people with a 3 axis arm, all can be built with some scrap iron, a flame cutter and some bolts and 5 small electric motors and a simple aluminium - air battery.

Amazing. My son was a researcher at the local university a few years back. One of his research was to outfit the wheelchair users with exoskeleton and helped them exercise. He said many of them were really excited standing up the first time since they injured their spines or were born with the pathology. This child is really lucky. The exoskeleton suit is really expensive, very few could dream of owning one. This one does not look as bulky though.

@@matbroomfield time will tell, of course. But from a few articles I’ve come across, this is just one of many exoskeleton projects. Huge companies worldwide reportedly are racing to develop them for medical, industrial, and military applications. Some of the other medical ones look a lot smaller. Sadly, this short video didn’t include any context. Instead they just took the easiest human interest angle, which leaves us with lots of questions. As someone who’s had brief experience using a powered wheelchair, and pushing my mother in a non-powered wheelchair, there are many problems with that technology. One of the biggest problems, though, is that walking people are clueless and rude - exoskeletons can only help a bit with that. When using a powered wheelchair for shopping, I found that some other shoppers collided with me because they only looked ahead at their own eye level (which would cause them to collide with kids or shorter people too). And most others who saw me refused to even make eye contact with me while I was in the chair. Good grief, people can be so weird!
