Dad just doesn’t want to believe I’m his kid. But it was still a good day for his energy and engagement.

I think Ed’s skeptical attitude is not only endearing but hopefully beneficial. He realizes his memory is compromised but he’s not sure why. That lack of clarity requires that he put up a defense. He takes every claim/fact presented with some skepticism. It’s a smart self protection posture that helps him avoid being taken advantage of. There’s no leading Ed down the primrose path.

As a nurse, I am convinced that people with dementia decline at breakneck speed in nursing homes because there's nobody there who has time to keep them rooted in reality. Best to work towards that end, as you are doing, rather than indulging him in his confusion.

Not all homes are great like mine though. Some are horrible. My home has a waiting list of 7 years to get in. It’s an old building but maintained very well. It is on the water with beautiful grounds. I have been there for 23 years!

He has some short term memory, but not as severe as Dr. Ed! When he can’t remember things I just remind him that his brain is 98, and he can’t fit much more in there! But, he can remember stories from serving in WWII. And, I can usually finish them because I’ve heard them so many times. I’ll miss hearing them over and over one day! Keep up the great work Dan and Danielle!! ❤

My dad would talk to us if we talked to him. He always knew me. Then when he hit about 95 he would just sleep in his chair. He would eat but slept during the day, which had me up. I didn't sleep for about 2 years. Then The VFW Hospital had an opening in the nursing home section, which is very hard to get in with a waiting list. But we happened to take him there to the Emergency room for, we thought Covid, and I asked the Dr. if he could check and see if there were any openings. I use a walker and have had 6 back surgeries in my life, so it's been hard on me to take care of him. So they did have one opening. And he just stayed in Emergency then moved him over. When I came home I cried to my husband that I put dad in a home. He said Debbie, you took care of him for 10 years. So he lived till he was 97 and they all loved him there.

Close to the end of my mom's life, she said things to me that tried to separate us. It was a true challenge. My beautiful mother accused me of things I never did to her, it was so difficult. I had her in seven different senior places before she passed. There were times I would go and see her, then when I would leave, I'd get in my car and just cry my eyes out. Dementia/ Alzheimer's is true hell on earth....aka the "slow death." That time in my life truly made me much stronger, but just wow. Her birthday was August 30 and I am so grateful to have had an incredible mother such as her. She loved, protected and nurtured me so very much. I don't know what I did to deserve such an incredible mother as her. Love you forever Phoebe.
