Kanye West - JESUS IS KING
/ jesus-is-king
open.spotify.com/album/0FgZKf...
Jesus Is King is the ninth studio album by American rapper Kanye West. It was released on October 25, 2019, through GOOD Music and distributed by Def Jam Recordings. The album follows a Christian theme, different from his usual work. West described it as "an expression of the gospel". It features guest appearances from Clipse, Ty Dolla Sign, Kenny G, Fred Hammond, Ant Clemons, and the Sunday Service Choir. Production is included from West, Federico Vindver, Angel Lopez, BoogzDaBeast, and Timbaland, among others.
West began recording the album in August 2018, originally announcing it as Yandhi. The album missed two initial release dates in September and November 2018 under the original title, before being delayed indefinitely due to leaks. West had formed his gospel group the Sunday Service Choir in January 2019, performing gospel songs and covers of songs from West's discography. The song "Water" was performed live prior to release by the group. In August 2019, Yandhi was reannounced as Jesus Is King, but it missed two planned release dates for late September 2019 under the new title.
The final release of Jesus Is King was simultaneous with that of a concert film of the same name, which included a number of the tracks as part of the soundtrack. The singles "Follow God" and "Closed on Sunday" were both released in November 2019, charting in the top 20 of the US Billboard Hot 100. The album received mixed reviews from music critics, with a number of them drawing comparisons between it and West's previous solo album, Ye (2018). Some critics complimented the former's composition, while others expressed negative feelings towards the lyrics and the inconsistency of ideas.
Jesus Is King won the Top Christian Album and Top Gospel Album awards at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards and Best Contemporary Christian Music Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2021. It stood as West's record-tying ninth consecutive studio album to debut atop the US Billboard 200. In addition, West broke several Billboard charts' records. The album was a chart topper in nine other countries, including Australia and Canada, while attaining top five positions in the Czech Republic, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. It has been certified gold and silver in the United States and the UK by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and British Phonographic Industry (BPI), respectively. A companion album, Jesus Is Born, was released in December 2019 by the Sunday Service Choir.

I think it's undervalued of an album. There are some great songs and even though I'm not Christian, I feel the emotion in the album with tracks like Water and Selah. And as a whole it comes across to me as the album Ye made while he was at his happiest. Which makes me happy.

This album may not be his strongest but its definitely important as a cultural statement. For him to insert a family friendly, experimental gospel album into an otherwise very profane and explicit genre shows why Kanye west is an innovator. Where ever the culture is, he will run in the complete opposite direction and you have to respect that.

I get how the general audience doesn’t like this album, but as a Christian, this album is amazing because there’s no artist Christian or not that has made a rap album like that. @@TheBestPizzaConnoisseur I get your rationale, but it's hard not to consider it official when they built and sold a $200 MP3 player/engineering tool in part to showcase the album and it's fully available to those willing to pay for it. Video games are often patched and more recently movies are taking this approach too (Spider-Man: No Way Home and Cats are two big examples of films being updated in theaters to fix stuff.) This album was the biggest grower for me in his discography. Went from thinking it was low effort money grab, to understanding the emotions and feelings behind it that give it depth.

Gave me chills first time listening, the IMAX experience even more so. Refreshing, as the world seemed to be falling apart when he released this, that there was a man at the top of the secular culture connecting back to the West's spiritual roots, in his own way. God and Christianity have always been apart of Kanye's work and for one album he gave it it's time and without shame or as an affect. As for the gospel, look at Kendrick's latest drop...Kanye always leads the culture. Kanye does Kanye, album rankings and critics can say whatever but in the end an artist, of his caliber, authentically expressed something important to his entire being.

Amen!! Was really hoping and praying for very well known celebrity who loves Jesus and is also not ashamed of being a follower of Christ and along came Kanye. And he was genuinely happy from his heart you could feel and see it when he made this album

I think this is my favorite video reaction from you both, it's really awesome hearing Jesus Is King with you both and with Kevin being open to hearing it for what it is without any bias or sway coming into it. I think even though sonically, lyrically, and thematically this is Kanye's weakest project out of his discography but it's still a great work! I remember listening to this album the first day it came out and I was really happy to hear it. Criminally short, but it's a good 27 minute project. Thank you for this video, much love!

Listening to this album felt like listening to a new believer being excited and passionate about their faith and genuinely wanting everyone to experience what they're experiencing. This album was a huge encouragement to me. His boldness was refreshing, and it was encouraging to know that you can be honest and it can be well received. That Christian music can push the boundaries of what is "expected". (There are a ton of amazing Christian artists though who are changing the music landscape, but you have to dig a little). My shout out is Jon Guerra. Not hip hop, defs alternative vibes but a vibe indeed.

I actually really enjoyed this album! I grew up in a Christian family, but I don’t consider myself super religious by any stretch of the imagination. I thought for what it was, it was super unique, had great sounds, and is one of the only Christian type music I can actually listen to. I find most church or religious music extremely corny for some reason, and this one didn’t feel corny at all.

Wow. For some reason all these years I couldn’t figure out why this album had so much hate. After watching this I realized some people just don’t like the sound of gospel music. Growing up in a church it’s a normal style of music I’m used to so I guess I have a more comfortable listening on this album

people don’t like it simply because the lyrical content is boring and doesn’t expand outside any boundaries - “but it doesn’t need to expand outside boundaries” - not necessarily wrong, but nothing about the album is interesting at all lyric wise. I can understand if you like the sound of the album but personally I think it’s bland and boring (especially compared to other gospel hip-hop projects ex. coloring book & acid rap)
