Damn (stylized as DAMN.) is the fourth studio album by American rapper Kendrick Lamar. It was released on April 14, 2017, through Top Dawg Entertainment, Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records.
The album features production from a variety of record producers, including executive producer and Top Dawg Entertainment label-head Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith, Sounwave, DJ Dahi, Mike Will Made It, and Ricci Riera; as well as further production contributions from James Blake, Steve Lacy, BadBadNotGood, Greg Kurstin, The Alchemist, and 9th Wonder, among others. Damn features appearances from singers Rihanna and Top Dawg singer Zacari, along with Irish rock band U2.
Damn received widespread critical acclaim and topped the US Billboard 200 with 603,000 album-equivalent units earned in its first week. It also topped the chart of Canada while reaching number two in Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. It was supported by three official singles: "Humble", "Loyalty", and "Love", the first of which became Lamar's first number-one single on the US Billboard Hot 100 as a lead artist. Damn was certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in May 2018 and was also the Billboard Year-End number one album of 2017.
Damn topped The Village Voice's Pazz & Jop critics poll and was named one of the best albums of 2017 and the decade by several other publications. It became the first non-jazz or classical work to earn a Pulitzer Prize for Music and won Best Rap Album at the 2018 Grammy Awards, as well receiving a nomination for Album of the Year at the ceremony. In 2020, the album was ranked 175th on Rolling Stone's updated list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Fun fact: This album tells two stories in one. If u listen to BLOOD. To DUCKWORTH. It tells us a story about Kendrick going from wicked to a sane man but he dies either way to a gunshot. But if u listen to DUCKWORTH. To BLOOD. It tells us that Kendrick went from sane to wicked and died either way but it was more impactful since his name gets dragged across the mud by the media after his death.

The normal album is the path to wickedness. This was the path where anthony killed ducky and kendrick grew up without a father. He dies in a gunfight from lack of his father’s teachings. Backwards he takes the path of weakness. Anthony let ducky live and kendrick grew up with a great upbringing. He dies in blood anyway due to his hospitality. You choose how he dies. “Damned if i do, Damned if i dont.”

Kendrick won a Pulitzer price for literature (or poetry or both) with this album. The only music of any genre in history to ever win a Pulitzer price, ever. None before, none after and none ever will. It was certainly unique for a rapper or any musician to win an international award for literature and poetry. He is undoubtedly the best rap artist and rapper, unafraid to call out the black community and the pervasive racism and injustice of the system. That’s why he is often maligned by his own community and applauded by others who sees no colour and thus able to appreciate the truthfulness and unbiased sincerity of his message. Honestly, you never get to appreciate any of Kendrick’s albums on first listening and you need to be able to understand that he’s rhymes are lit but not easily understood from easy listening. You need to be intentional and smart enough to appreciate the nuances and subtlety of his songs. He is a generational talent.

It is probably the most coveted awards in these fields of academia. The Oscars meanwhile is basically a Film and Cinematic Award. If you ask me personally, i think the Pulitzer award is much more valuable. Maybe that’s why Kendrick’s music has been added to the educational curriculum in some universities? I would think so

The structure of this album is also very cool. you have FEEL before LOYALTY, PRIDE before HUMBLE, LUST before LOVE, and the most important to the album imo, FEAR before GOD. this makes the deluxe version so much cooler because the album has a totally different feel front to back. The Story of DAMN is between wickedness and weakness and you could choose if Kendrick lives or dies if you choose the collectors edition or the regular version. The gunshot in BLOOD. Means his spirit dies and he goes on a path through weakness and lives, but in the collectors edition (which is the reverse playlist) his father dies in DUCKWORTH. and one of the founders of TDE, Top Dawg is in jail so Kendrick never rapped and becomes gang affiliated, instead of Kendrick looking for loyal friends in LOYALTY. He looks for loyal henchmen. Instead of thinking about his PRIDE. and becoming HUMBLE. He becomes prideful. When finding out he’s cursed in the regular version he says he doesn’t give a fuck but secretly does, but in the collectors edition he founds out all colored people (Blacks, Hispanics, and Natives) are cursed he truly doesn’t care and that is what kills him in BLOOD. Instead of Him fearing GOD. in the regular version, he fears his country in XXX. Aka the uncensored version USA.

Timed had passed and the hype was dying down, until someone had a theory. That DAMN was also an album you could play in backwards order and it was still narratively correct. Thus, that was the second album.

I'ev always taken FEEL to be an allusion to a soul struggling to self-soothe/someone sitting through mental health treatment. With the repeated "I feel..." statements, the rapid swings in musical/vocal intensity, and the way Kendrick keeps coming back to the same sticking point ("a'int nobody praying for me"), it gives this vibe of listening to someone who is at their limit venting to a therapist.

My interpretation of DAMN's narrative is that it's an alternate life where Kendrick is a street dude. Front to back the album is him getting shot with his life flashing before his eyes. Back to front (because there's tons of reverse sounds and lyrics in the beats) it's his life leading up to his death. Also, the album is circular from the ending of DUCKWORTH. going back to the beginning showing that this story repeats infinitely for the black community. When I thought of all of this, even if it isn't Kendrick's intentional narrative, I literally said "damn" out loud.
