Logic - Under Pressure
/ under-pressure
open.spotify.c...
Under Pressure is the debut studio album by American rapper Logic. It was released on October 21, 2014, by Visionary Music Group and Def Jam Recordings. Development and composition of the album began in 2013, with recording taking place during a two-week span at the beginning of 2014. The album's production was primarily handled by No I.D., with smaller contributions from a variety of record producers, including 6ix, DJ Dahi, DJ Khalil, S1, Jake One and Dun Deal. The standard edition of the album contained no guest appearances; Big Sean and Childish Gambino were featured on the album's deluxe edition.
Under Pressure received generally positive reviews from critics, drawing particular attention to Logic's bluntness in his storytelling, its perceptive lyricism, and the album's toned-down production, resembling the ever-changing production of rap and hip hop releases of the 1990s. It was also named one of the best albums of 2014 by several publications. The album debuted at number four on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 72,000 copies in its first week. It was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in August 2020.
Between 2010 and 2013, Logic released four free mixtapes online and funded his own tours, through which he built his fanbase and reputation. According to Logic, the largest contributing factor to his rise to stardom was that he "hit the road and actually saw [the fans] face to face and shook their hands." He signed with Def Jam five months after the release of his Young Sinatra mixtape in 2011; a deal kept secret until 2013 because he "didn't want the fans to be like, 'Oh, he's going to change!" Logic has metaphorically described Def Jam as his "bank", which does not interfere with his creative control or deal much with his publicity. Visionary Music Group, an independent label run by Logic, managed and funded his audio mixing, mastering, touring, and commissioning of album art.
In 2013, Logic moved to Los Angeles to work on his debut album with Def Jam's No I.D., a mentor he later compared to Yoda. Several people advised Logic to make the album more personal than his mixtapes, inspiring him to write about his difficult upbringing in Gaithersburg, Maryland. On the advice of Don Cannon, he chose to maintain the album's personal theme by omitting guest appearances. Its title Under Pressure reflects the challenges of Logic's private life and rap career, while also referencing his belief that the album is "his diamond", as diamonds are formed by pressure. His prior mixtapes had dealt heavily with his biracial heritage, but he changed his focus from race to culture on the album. Rather than go "the radio route" with Under Pressure, Logic wanted to create a classic hip hop album in the style of Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, A Tribe Called Quest, Big Daddy Kane, Kanye West and Big L. To help new listeners understand that his roots lie in this music, Logic tried to make Under Pressure more consistent and more quintessentially hip hop than his mixtapes, which he found incohesive. Although he admitted to emulating other rappers on his earlier releases, he believed that the album would finally crystallize "the sound of Logic".

I get so much nostalgia listening to any project by him from The Incredible True Story to anything before that. Felt like he was just going to keep pumping out great album after album which bums me out that his bars and production took such a nose dive, but I’ll give No Pressure a pass.

Can't listen to this album without the nostalgia kicking in from a time with less responsibilities, just living life as a teenager. I own a vinyl copy of this and Soul Food, Never Enough, Till the End and Growing Pains III still hit different. The Incredible True Story is a strong follow up, I think your dad would enjoy the production on that project too if he enjoys the production on this.

Although I love Logic just because of nostalgia, I’d say you’d only really need to listen to Under Pressure, The Incredible True Story and No Pressure. Three great albums, the others have some good tracks and some wack ones but if you’re a Logic fan you’d enjoy a lot of his other stuff. The sinatra tapes also have some gold in them. Great reaction as always guys, some recommendations are Anderson Paak’s WHOLE discography, Chidish Gambino and Peach Pit (great band even if you guys react to mainly hip hop, I think Kevin would love it.)

This album and his young Sinatra mixtapes remind me of a really special time in my life. I remember listening to this in high school and and it was really unique to have young “cheesy” artists like him and Mac that I could relate to. T.I.T.S was a good follow up sophomore album too with a story that I liked a lot. After that there were a few songs here and there that were great(44 bars, Indica Badu), but overall he hasn’t come close to his early level, although No Pressure was a good sign that he still has that ability. I respected how he tried to change his sound and he had a great message on Everybody, but overall nothing really resonated with me like his early ones. Also, his main producer 6ix that he came up with is probably one of the best in the game that absolutely no one talks about.

@@bigsmacked there’s been plenty of hip hop artists from the 90’s and 2000’s to use voicemails and rapping from the perspective of someone else in their songs. I’m so glad you had your dad react to this album! I’m a huge Logic fan and I definitely feel like he’s overhated. That doesn’t mean I think his entire discography is perfect, but it’s definitely a lot better than what most people make it seem to be. Under Pressure, The Incredible True Story, No Pressure, and his Young Sinatra mixtapes are all amazing projects. It sucks because a lot of people have never listened to them since they found out about Logic afterwards because of the 1-800 song. Either way, he’s still a great artist. Can’t wait to listen to his new album!
@arthurdunn4594
@arthurdunn4594 2 жыл бұрын
Every Logic fan thinks that he's overhated and that the Young Sinatra tapes are amazing. Neither of those things are particularly correct. Edit: I forgot to add, also, nobody cares more about the 1-800 song than Logic fans 💀 and they all think that there's a bunch of fake fans who don't understand the old music like real fans do, only having discovered him after 1-800. Relax goofy 🤣
@TheMisterMann
@TheMisterMann 2 жыл бұрын
@@arthurdunn4594 I never said anything about fake fans. I was saying people in general first discovered him because of the 1-800 song, so they probably never listened to those projects I mentioned, because they came out beforehand. Also, if somebody likes the artist’s music, old or new, I would think that they’re a fan. So generally speaking, if someone is a fan of Logic, they’re most likely a fan of his mixtapes as well. If you think that’s not “particularly correct”, then you’re probably not a fan or you don’t really listen to him like that.

@@arthurdunn4594 I mean even then, everyone lowkey misremembers Logic on his come up, but he’s pretty much Chance before Chance when it comes to his popularity. Great mixtapes, great debut album, amazing to okay sophomore album whether people fucked with the space theme, good mixtape, decent 3rd album but became the 1-800 guy, good 2nd mixtape, decent Sinatra album but overshadowed by Lil Wayne, two bad albums, return to form with No Pressure which is top 3 in his discography, dropped a filler EP to help get out of his contract and now we’re to Vinyl Days. One thing that Logic has absolutely improved on is his production but his writing and pen ability suffered as a cost, but he never lost his pen just didn’t rely on it when he should’ve.

Gave me chills when you told the story about logic, simply because I have the same experience growing up. I remember going to see him on tour, and sneaking out right before the concert ended, to go behind the building where his bus was to meet him, they had a roped off walkway for like 100 feet from the building to his bus. We saw Lenbo first, he was like a big teddy bear and signed our tickets, the man literally stood there with us for 10 minutes just talking. Logic came out and it was almost like he was nervous to meet us/the people around us. Very very down to earth, non-egotistical people. Thanks for sharing your story.

Under pressure reminds me of Mac Miller's perfect circle/God speed. Not just because of the phone call and beat switch but the struggles that they were both having and the raw emotion it puts out there. I will always appreciate an artist that can effortlessly switch up a beat mid song and an artist that can make you feel something. Twenty one pilots are really good at that too
