I was one of the only black dudes that listened to them back in the late 90s early 00s. Then I introduced to some friends and SOAD ended up in everyone's mixes. Great band, and serjs voice is dope.

Yo, when I was a kid (I'm a white dude) the guy who got me into SOAD was black (probably still is, too)! He hung out and skated with my brother, and I heard Toxicity blasting from his walkman. I asked him what it was and had my mind blown. This was like a month after I first heard Disturbed, and I was sold on metal.

The songs original name is suicide, the label didn’t think that it was a good idea to name it that so they had to change it to chop suey, that’s why (In the studio recording of the song) Serj says “we’re rolling suicide” in the beginning.

Loved your reaction and love SOAD. Any reaction by this band, I am here ☺❤ Majority of *System of a Down* songs have important messages and meanings behind it. This band is unlike any with their transition and creativity, no one sounds like them out there. The song originally titled **Suicide** but the record company wanted it changed so the band changed it "Suey" is "suicide", "chopped" in half. "This song is about how we are regarded differently depending on how we pass, like, if I were now to die from drug abuse, people will say I deserved it because I abused dangerous drugs vs if it was an accident or any other way, people would feel bad and sorry. It's the way people judge based on how a person dies. Hence *I cry when angels deserve to die* we are all God's children. This song is deep and a reason it's over a billion views, but SOAD always takes it to another level, that's why I have so much respect for them. Thank you, looking forward to more SOAD 👍❤💯 Do Prison Song with lyrics next 😁

Two of my favorite System songs "Prison Song" & "Deer Dance" are on the same album as this. Both tracks have very deep political and philosophical themes about the impact of war, police brutality, and drug abuse. They can get wild and silly for sure, but when they try, System is one of the most poignant and real bands out there. Highly recommend listening to more 😊

Aahhhhh!!! System is one of my absolute favorites. They are incredible. sugar and BYOB are two amazing songs. So they are similar to rage against the machine in their political leanings (anarchist - social democrats, anti war) and they are Armenian so they speak out a lot about the Armenian genocide, they are truly brilliant

The lyrics from what I understand are supposed to represent people's vices towards the beginning leading them to self-harm/suicide and people's negative perceptions of them when they do ("I cry when angels deserve to die") and the persons hopelessness ("Father into your hands/ I commend my spirit... Why have you forsaken me) as like a last cry for help. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I'm right, but the lyrics are pretty deep

Not sure if you guy are into current hard rock / metal.... but need to check out "Electric Callboy" they are the masters of switching up & breaking down rhytms. They are best mix and fusion of Metal + EDM + Pop, with a ton of humor and beats. Hard to describe but start with 'Hypa Hypa' or 'We Got The Moves', like nothing you have ever seen just fun, wild, and full of energy!!

Like your dad, it’s easy to miss the lyrical meaning as even the band hasn’t explained it clearly. As a Christian though, it’s actually abundantly clear. You can’t earn your way to heaven.. you will fall short (self righteous suicide) and you’ll be shocked (why have you forsaken me)

I understand that 99.9% of the time you hear a song you don't have lyrics in front of you nor are you going to understand them the first time. But don't be so quick to discount the lyrics. They can be very profound.
