@@cactaceous well i wouldn't say they blatantly copied them, but definitely took inspiration from the strokes and interpol... I mean, in the early 2000's there was a little explosion of garage rock, and the killers were definitely a part of it... But imo they're not nearly as successful as the other two... Sure they had Mr. Brightside and a couple of other hits, but the rest of their discography is not as good as interpol and the strokes.

What makes the strokes great is that they kept their original sound while still adjusting to the new instrumentals and sounds coming out
@shadetheband3 жыл бұрын
I love songs from all the phases of the strokes, and I think the main commonality and thing that holds the phases together is Julians vocals and melody writing. It’s hard for me to agree they kept their “original sound” when you compare this album to the earlier classics. To me overall it’s a different feel. I prefer this newer “vibey” sound over the more grungy garage rock sound of old, that being said I still love the old feel when I’m in the mood for it. I guess it just depends how you define what a bands “sound” is.
@shadetheband3 жыл бұрын
There is truth in what you’re saying as I think about it more. They adapted and changed without losing themselves or the elements that hooked people in the beginning. They certainly didn’t “sell out” or go formulaic. So in that sense you’re right. And I wonder if I’m looking at it too micro, and when you look at the big picture they have always had “their sound” and nothing else sounds quite like The Strokes. I guess what I want to know is if you look at their character arc and compare it with other bands natural progressions, would it be fair to say they completely changed their sound, or that they kept their original sound. At the end of the day, it’s good music and I love where their arc has taken them and can’t say the same about all the bands I’ve followed throughout my life.

The Strokes are just such a fun band to follow. This album especially, every track just makes me both happy and sad and stirs up feelings of nostalgia and desperation. Such a versatile fun album. Favorite tracks are The Adults Are Talking, Brooklyn Bridge To Chorus and Why Are Sundays So Depressing. So full and well mixed! This was an amazing reaction, love the true appreciation for music

16:25 that was completely intentional, Billy Idol got writing credits on the song. It's an homage about the music you grow up with, and is referenced in Brooklyn Bridge to Chorus "And the 80s bands, oh where did they go?"

Is This It and Room on Fire were the albums that really got me into music and while First Impressions and on kind disappointed me, those first two are still among my all time favorite, so I don't say this lightly, but I truly think The New Abnormal is the best album The Strokes have ever put out. The music world wasn't poised for TNA the same way as it was in 2001 for Is This It, but TNA is peak song-writing, lyricism and creativity for the Strokes. It's fantastic.

@@jacobpullen6949 It was my friend’s favorite Strokes album back in HS too :) I think there’s some cool tracks, and even if I don’t totally love the style of it, that it’s a good stepping stone to some later Voidz sounds (feel the same way about Angles). I would rank FIOE higher if they cut 4-5 tracks from the mid/back of the album ehich to me just sound super uninspired, but there’s still plenty to like.

I still think Room On Fire is their best album, but The New Abnormal comes sooooo damn close. The fact that we waited 7 years for a new album and they dropped an arguable masterpiece is so fulfilling as a fan.
@jacobpullen69493 жыл бұрын
@@inordirectional It’s probably my 4th favorite, after the big 3 everyone talks about, but I put it just a little bit below those. Tracks like Juicebox, Visions of Division, Heart in a cage, and Razorblade are all among my very favorute Strokes tracks. I really like the heavier, on edge style it goes for a lot.

The best way to explain the sound of the strokes with the blend of all instruments and the voice of Julian Casablancas is like wearing that pair of jeans that already broken in, and you just love to use on the regular basis

The thought that the drums on The Adults Are Talking are electronic is an understandable one, but Fabrizio is just so precise that they sound a little electronic. However, as far as I know, the whole album is all acoustic drums. Super impressive. And the solo breakdown in Selfless has become one of my absolute favorites. I wake up with it in my head all the time.

I had so much fun watching Kevin enjoy this album, he didn't see that coming! I never got to it last year and I've only recently listened to it, and it hit me hard. I didn't expect such a comeback at this point, I'd argue it's one of the best things they've done if not their finest. Not a single bad song in there.
