Oh my goodness, this made me cry! Pilot Chris did such an amazing job at comforting her, telling her she knew what to do and telling her exactly what to expect. When he said his daughters name is Taylor and he taught her to fly, I felt like he was so invested, he would not let anything happen to her. Way to Go Taylor! You did SO Good! I love this channel! I learned to fly 25 years ago but I haven’t been able to in the last 10 years. I am inspired to go back and take a few lessons and study before I get current again. While in the Video Chris is only known by his first name there is a very interesting detail about him. He is not just some random GA Chris. Taylor was helped down by Chris Yates, the former director of aviation for SpaceX. But for Taylor, as she didn't quit her traing, she will be a great pilot. This was an experience most pilots will never face. After this I'm sure she will be able to handle each situation and land safe. By the way, maybe one day, there will be a commercial plane with Maggie and Taylor together in the front. Either the safest possible flight or all wheels drop off.

Chris is a fkn hero here! I have never been involved in crisis management in aviation, but I have a decent experience when it comes to naval crisis. If you manage to get someone on the radio in a situation that might escalate the brain in ANY WAY, be calm, be supportive, give compliments, reinforce training, make the person believe in whatever has to be done. Chris here is a prime example of how to do this. A standing ovation from me!
@corvinredacted

I don't care how unsurvivable my situation was, I'd want someone to talk to me exactly like that. It's amazing the emotional effect of confident instruction and encouragement when you're spiraling. I'd rather be given pointless instructions to follow for my own comfort, even if both my wings had fallen off. It's so important that you never let the person in the emergency know that you are anything less than confident in a good outcome. Easing the fear of someone's final moments can be just as heroic as saving a life.

I also love the way the other pilot up in the air just totally abandoned whatever he was going to do that day to follow her in the pattern, provide a set of eyes on the aircraft from the aerial perspective and was wise enough to quiet down and let Chris instruct her as a single voice to follow but ready to help if that guidance was insufficient. It’s not mentioned, but if they were aware of the emergency a whole lot of ground crew and emergency services would have been poised to leap into action had it been necessary. Or at least that’s how it’s done at the airport I work at. You got an aircraft in distress coming in? You prepare yourself and whatever resources you have on hand to assist if necessary. Might not be necessary but you’re ready for it all the same.

On my solo in the T-38, I had the distinction of having a main landing gear malfunction and was flying out to the "controlled bailout area" when with advice from the 3 or 4 following T-38 IP's was able to break the incorrectly installed bolt and successfully land back at Williams AFB. Long time ago. Great Job Chris, you will make a great airline pilot.

This video was great. Far better than those solo pilots who killed themselves. This girl was asking for help and she got it from a great CFI and the ATC. Do you see? You can ALWAYS tell any ATC what is going wrong. Even a huge international airport tower will HELP you. Ask for help! Do not be ashamed, this can happen to the best pilots, and it might save your life and that matters.

911 operator here, he did some really great "caller management" and redirection. A hysterical caller can often be managed by distracting with "What's your name?" because it's such a non sequitur they have to think for a second, and then you immediately give them a task to funnel that energy into with new focus. Every time I listen to these recordings I get teary eyed, she must have been terrified.

@@christhorney Prop strikes are one of the most costly incidents that can happen to propeller-driven aircraft. They usually require an engine overhaul, and they can easily take an airplane out of service for weeks, if not months. Lycoming Service Bulletin 533C discusses what's considered to be a prop strike (or sudden stoppage event) and subsequent required maintenance actions. According to Lycoming, this is what's considered a prop strike: Any incident during engine operation where the propeller impacts a solid object. This incident includes propeller strikes against the ground. Although the propeller can continue to turn, damage to the engine can occur, possibly with progression to engine failure. Sudden RPM drop on impact to water, tall grass, or similar yielding medium where propeller damage does not usually occur. Any incident, whether or not the engine is operating, where repair of the propeller is necessary. Prop strikes can occur during anything from a hangar door hitting a stationary aircraft (without the engine running), to a gear-up landing. Sudden stoppage causes potentially severe side loading on the crankshaft of the propeller flange, front bearing, and seal.

It’s been years since a KZbin video that’s not just a really good song gave me chills. Perfect execution. Bravo Pilot debrief!! Bravo the pilot. Bravo ground control and those that assisted. Bravo everyone. I literally want to pat myself on the back for having listened to this video. I started watching maybe a week ago as my fascination with aviation grows. You sir hold the torch currently. Great story!!

This guy was awesome: Imagine if most people approached problems in such a matter. His children are very lucky.

Don’t worry, if you ever get into trouble during your flying career, everyone will do their best for you. Even the ground crews if necessary. Everyone airside in the airport will be ready to help any aircraft in distress if they can.

Every time I hear one of these lady student pilots voice crack in an emergency, I start to tear up. They're so scared. The instructors are always so reassuring! The one thing I'm always watching for in these videos is the prop position when the engine stops. As a pilot myself, I would probably be concentrating on tapping the starter to get the prop horizontal so that I don't get a prop strike when the nose hits the ground, but Taylor did a fantastic job of landing this aircraft. I'm always so relieved when they get the plane stopped and they survive.

It's nice to know the instructor aircraft are so well maintained - this one lost a nose wheel, another lost right rear.....confidence inspiring
